Basketball: Bruins’ sophomore big man Josh Smith may start games on bench

UCLA coach Ben Howland says he likely will bring sophomore center Josh Smith off the bench in order to help keep him out of foul trouble.

– UCLA junior forward Reeves Nelson injured his ankle in practice Tuesday and may not play in the Friday opener vs. Loyola Marymount.

– New Pac-12 member Utah will be without senior center David Foster for an indefinite period because of scheduled foot surgery, and junior guard Chris Hines will be out 2 to 4 weeks with a rib injury. Here’s more.

– USC coach Kevin O’Neill says that if 5-foot-7 sophomore guard Maurice Jones is injured and must sit out, Trojans fans shouldn’t bother coming to games. 

– Washington 7-foot center Aziz Ndiaye, who suffered a concussion in an Oct. 30 scrimmage vs. Santa Clara, has been cleared to play in the Huskies’ opener Saturday against Georgia State.
