FINAL SCORE: Cal 77, Irvine 56. Bears win their opener with ease as Crabbe scores 24, Gutierrez has 11 points, nine rebounds and seven assists and Kamp contributes 10 points and eight rebounds. Solomon had eight points and eight rebounds and Smith had seven points, six assists and four rebounds.

4:00 2nd H: Gutierrez just limped off the floor on a sore right ankle. Seems OK. (Update: Mike Montgomery said afterward it was merely a cramp). Not even getting medical treatment on bench. He has 11 points, a career-high nine rebounds and seven assists.

7:52 2nd H: The Anteaters have crept within 63-50, but there seems no crisis on the floor.

11:53 2nd H: Kravish just came out after apparently injuring his ankle in a tangle with teammate Thurman. But he’s up and seemingly OK. Lead is 61-40. Crabbe has 19 points — 11 in the first eight minutes of the second half.

14:17 2nd H: Cal leads 59-35. Crabbe has 17 points and Gutierrez is doing everything — 11 points, six rebounds, six assists.

17:37 2nd H: Crabbe just stole an outlet pass and dunked and the Bears lead 55-30. Crabbe now has 15 points.

HALFTIME: Cal 48, UCI 23. No surprise here. Bears have dominated from the opening tip. Cal shooting 53 percent and is holding the Anteaters to 33 percent with eight turnovers. The Bears gave up some offensive rebounds during one stretch, but have outrebounded UCI 23-12. Gutierrez has 11 points, five assists and four rebounds. Kamp and Crabbe each have eight points. Solomon has six points, six rebounds. Eleven Cal players already have gotten into the game.

3:43 1st H: Cal’s lead is 40-21. Gutierrez has nine points, five assists and three rebounds. Kamp has eight points, five rebounds. Crabbe has eight points. That’s 25 points from the three guys you expect to deliver. Cal shooting 58 percent, including 4 for 6 from 3-point, and is 8 for 9 from the FT line.

6:40 1st H: The rout is on. Cal leads 34-15 and is doing what it wants offensively. Very crisp passing — lots of open shots. Gutierrez and Cobbs hit consecutive 3-pointers a moment ago. Seven Cal players have scored and five have assists, including Kravish, who fed Bak Bak for a basket. Cal shooting 63 pecent, UCI is at 37 percent.

11:16 1st H: Cal’s lead is 21-9. The Bears are moving the ball very well against UCI’s zone defense. Cal already has six assists, three of them by Gutierrez, who also has four points. Freshman David Kravish just entered the game for the first time.

15:14 1st H: Bears out to a 15-7 lead. Crabbe hit a 3-pointer just 11 seconds into the season and Cal had leads of 13-2 and 15-5. Crabbe has eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers and the Bears are shooting 6 for 9 from the field.

STARTING LINEUPS: The Bears will start Harper Kamp, Richard Solomon, Allen Crabbe, Jorge Gutierrez and Brandon Smith. The Anteaters will go with Will Davis II, Michael Wilder, Mike Best, Chris McNealy and Daman Starring.

WELCOME to a new college basketball season.

I’m here at Haas Pavilion for the Bears’ opener against UC Irvine.

A nice student crowd already in place as the athletic department invited the first 1,000 students to attend each of the first three home games for free. Smart ploy.

Will be back with starting lineups.

Loyola Marymount 60, UCLA 54, about 5 minutes left in the game…

The Big 3 looked good, Crabbe, Jorge, Kamp. Kravish was great. Crabbe looked really strong, literally he’s bulked up. Bench looked weak and Monty just said so on radio.

What the heck is up with that Bruins?
Really poor showing on opening night.
    Come on

Bruins are going to experience a living hell at the LA Sports Arena, plus they’re flaky and the big man Smith isn’t that good.
