Football: The day’s news and notes

I was planning to blog again but wound up writing a story for tomorrow’s paper. Just a collection of items, including bowl talk, Mychal Kendricks’ big honor and injury updates. Read up if you like …

Joe Stiglich

Thought folks might enjoy this recruiting article http://georgiatech.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1300048

  • rollonubears

    Wow! Great link Juancho.

  • S1lverngreen

Freddie Tagaloa to Cal! Go Bears!

  • rotfogel

Kendricks is going to have a good NFL career. He’s right up there with Bishop and Follett in the last ten years as the best LBs Cal has had.

  • Steve W

Clay’s departure from the program raises some interesting questions about who will be the number 2 and 3 wideouts for the team next year. Judging from his PT in the Stanford game, I would guess that Bouza will be in the mix. Who else? Will Cal need to go the JC route to plug in some guys who can play right away? I have to admit I’m not real studied up on this, but I can’t recall anyone non seniors other than Allen who got any playing time at WR this year.

  • MoreNCsarecoming

My my my. Isn’t it surprising how attitudes change so quickly when the hometeam wins a few games.

    Well let’s review your victories

Colorado – set the Pac 12 on fire
Fresno State – Fritz is a goner
    Presbyterian – Oh boy….
Oregon State – had its worst year in many many years
    WSU – enough said
Utah – couldn’t even beat Colorado to win the south
ASU – canned its coach after losing the last 6 straight. No Pac 12 team had a bigger collapse than ASU except for your 2007 team.

Gee, what an accomplishment. The next thing we will hear is that your AD just gave Teddy another extension because UCLA wants him as their HC.

Lane Kiffen rules. The best coach in the Pac 12.

  • MoreNCsarecoming

    Lets review you losses

    UW – Who?

Oregon – I know. It was close through the first half and we won the statistical battle. Those lines never grow old with Cal state fans.

pucla – LOL…LOL…LOL…LOL… That’s for everyone of those interceptions and all of their players who were suspended for the game. It was Rickey’s greatest day as a pucla HC

    USC – This loss just continues the string of beatdowns – 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011.

  • House

Funny to see Lane Kiffen and rules used in the same sentence without “broke several, disobeyed, overlooked” etc.. Nothing else in that post worth noting, as Cal prepares for its bowl game $c gets to watch us from the safety of their homes.

  • MoreSanctionsComing

My my my. Isn’t it surprising how trolls never go away no matter how unwanted they are.

    Let’s review your failures:

    1. Being so attention-starved, pathetic & lonely that you spend your time on a blog where everyone hates you.

    2. Making countless lame predictions which you ignore once they turn out to be wrong.

    3. Promising to leave if everyone voted you off, then welched out of your agreement once they did.

    4. Being a hater who loves USC, hates Cal, but wasn’t smart enough to attend/graduate from either school.

  • GoldenTrailsDave

Beating ASU on the road is easy. Kiffin told me so. oh wait…

    enjoy the off-season, troll

  • wehofx

Juancho, thanks for the link. I hope he’s right!

    Go Bears!

  • Steve W

The troll is correct in one sense: no quality victories this year or in 2010. He is also dead-on in his assessment of the string of embarassing losses Cal has suffered against SC. I am hoping this will be corrected in the Holiday Bowl against either Baylor or Texas. Can’t wait.

  • MoreSanctionsComing

Wrong, Steve W. The troll is not correct in ANY sense.

What you see from the troll is not honest critique, it’s bashing. You’re hoping problems get corrected in the Holiday bowl – she isn’t hoping that at all. She’s hoping the problems get worse in the Holiday bowl, next season, and forever so that she can come here and bash more.

Your comment gives the troll credibility she doesn’t deserve. Your comment gives her empty life purpose. Acting like she’s a legitimate contributor to this or any conversation on this blog only helps her cause. Please stop it.

  • SteveNTEXAS

Ok the troll is an ahole. Yes we are not a great football team but we aren’t banned from post season by the NCAA.

In Texas I used to argue for UT and A&M to join the Pac 10 -its a good academic as well as a clean conference. If I forgot to say “with the exception of USC” I would hear about it.

OK USC can pay more per player and buy kids who are faster and play better -nevertheless they should have been thrown out of the conference after the scandals.

  • Gdog

Paul Wulff get fired after going 4-8 with scholarship restrictions, all the other issues they had when he took over a winless team. Plus he was making only $600K! Tedford goes 5-7 in 2010 and keeps his at 2.5 plus million. Tedford aside I think that is a bad move by WSU. They were definitely improving and finally have full scholarships back now, the guy was working with restrictions for 4 years! They were at least competitive in most of their losses and even against Cal they played better than the final score indicated.

  • MoreNCsarecoming

Oh I also forgot one loss (but not really because I thought honorable people would add it).

Stanford – 3 out of 4 losses. Cattoused.

  • go8ears

    stupid troll..

  • ScottyBear

Troll: Your season is over. Get over it and get back to studying for the LSAT!

  • H8sRed

Sorry Gdog, but that’s a ridiculous comparison. Wulf was 9-40 (18%) in his four years; whereas Tedford was 33-17 (66%) in his first four years and 46-30 (60.5%) since then. Sure, Tedford has had his struggles, but they are a minor blip on the radar compared to Wulf’s record. (Still, I think WSU should have stuck with him for another season.)

After the turmoil of the tree-sitter years, the onus is now on Tedford and his staff to produce at consistently higher levels than the past few seasons. Although spring 2012 practice might be another roadshow as stadium work progresses, the SAHPC and New Memorial Stadium hopefully will be the final pieces of the puzzle that will allow Cal to reach those goals.

  • Will

Sadly, Moren continues to prove that mental health services in our country are deeply underfunded. Everyone is praying that you get the help you need.

  • Kent

It seems ridiculous that WSU fired Wulf…he was acutally making good progress…if WSU hires a big name coach and pays +$1.5M then I’d understand the change…but if they hire a former assistant coach as the new top guy…then the AD should be FIRED! What’s the commitment level and vision for the program? It’s easy to change a coach…but what do they want to be…that’s the problem with many AD’s they don’t do the hard work of figuring out a realistic path for their programs…and just resort to the knee jerk reation of blaming others.

Frankly…Sandy Barbour has not communicated the vision for the Cal program either!

Spoken by the one who follows me around every single blog in the US. Your credibility is lacking and your “advising” isn’t worthy.

  • covinared

Cal beats ASU. Cal goes bowling. Cal gets full allotment of scholarships.

  • Takeoffthatredshirt

The troll doesn’t actually like USC, it’s just a cover for a serious mental health issue over hating Cal. I still think its all a big joke, cause honestly, is anyone that pathetic? Please troll, find professional help – it’s really scary how little happiness you have life. Yeah you know what I mean.

  • wehofx

Gdog, I agree, I don’t understand why the ad fired Wulff. I thought he was doing a very good job and was on the verge of turning the corner. Pure speculation but either the ad’s ass was on the line. Or some powerful alum had a bug up his ass for pw.

So a question to the Fire-JT peeps, if Rich Rod had been hired to be our new hc, would you consider that a good hire? To me, he’s too much of a win at any cost type who is not suitable for Cal. The same goes for Leach.

I’ll be interested to see how you evaluate the new hc hires in Pac 12 relative to jt. To me the only clear slam-dunk-Cal-appropriate improvement over jt would be peterson but I still don’t think that’s going to happen. Rumor has it that he’s not happy at the prospect of boise joining big east – the wack conference realignments driven solely driven by greed are f*cking up the beauty of college fb but that’s a subject for a different conversation. If I was Peterson’s agent I’d tell him he’s crazy to even think about taking wsu, ucla or asu.

So, I look forward to hearing your opinions of the new hc hires as they are announced.

    Go Bears! Beat sdsu!

  • Larry

If/when UCLA loses to Oregon and their record goes to 6-7 will they be bowl eligible still? They would be under .500? Joe, any insight on this?

  • go8ears

How about keep Tedford, but renegotiate his salary to a reasonable amount?

  • covinared

Larry: UCLA would have to petition for a bowl game and take whatever is left over, if anything.

  • rollonubears

I’m thinking UCLA will indeed go to a bowl. They didn’t account for this possibility because you can’t plan on a school being sanctioned that would have been in the championship game, or…maybe you can.

  • eric

Wehox – good question. No, RichRod would not have been a good hire, as Michigan learned. He may work at UofA, but I think he would have been a bad fit at Cal, would have tried to mimic Oregon and fail, and would have forgotten about defense altogether. At WVU, he was competing against teams in the worst BCS conference (by far); that isn’t the Pac-10 (12).

The fish that got away was Peterson. I’m pretty sure we could have had him in 2008. Hoke was a GREAT hire; wish we had pursued him last year, though I think he still would have taken Michigan over Cal.

The OC at Wisconsin (unless he left last year) is terrific. But I would like to an exploration of D-1AA coaches, a la Kelley.

All of this, of course, is wishful thinking. Tedford will not be fired next year unless it is a total disaster, and, given the talent on the team and where other Pac-12 teams are projected to be, a 9-win season really should be expected and a winning record is highly, highly likely.

It is interesting what other Pac-12 schools have done. Neuweasel wins the South and has massive QB injuries two straight years, but gets fired because he was an overpaid coach who blamed his subordinates, couldn’t teach a QB how to throw, and lost a lot to his cross-town rival. Erickson gets fired, even though ASU’s record improved this year, and even though he was coach of the year in 2007 with a 10-win season, because he is overpaid coach who lets his team make numerous silly mistakes, and couldn’t deliver on the promise of his early years. Stoops gets canned, even though his team had three straight winning seasons and three bowl appearances, and even though Arizona’s OOC opponents this year were very difficult, primarily because he is an overpaid blowhard who let his team get totally humiliated by a lesser opponent. I don’t understand the WSU firing, though given that WSU has made two Rose Bowls in the BCS era, maybe the WSU administration has set high expectations.

I expect UofA, ASU, and UCLA all to improve.

  • Yoda

Hey Amy, any thoughts on where Barkley lands in the draft?

Think heavily about it during bowl season and post your thoughts somewhere else.

  • MoreNCsarecoming

    Yoda

The word I got was that he is staying. Why leave when you would be the frontrunner for the Heisman, your team has a very good chance for the NC game and you have receivers named Woods, Lee, Telfair, Farmer, etc.

While you are participating in your low ranking bowl game why not attempt to guess the score of the Cal state – USC game in 2012.The outcome is fairly certain – it is just the final score that should concern you guys.

  • Juancho

MoreNCs, Barley already declared he’s entering the draft.

    Be a better informed troll.

Nope. There has been no annoucement and a former coach I know said there is a good chance he returns.

Be a better informed fan but that’s out of the norm for Cal state fans.

  • rollonubears

34 posts, and most of them either from the troll, or somebody feeding her. I’m guilty of it, too, sometimes, but let’s try to make this a happier holiday season, by doing our part to make it a troll free zone.

  • MoreNCsarecoming

Frankly Rollonubears you are one of the worst. Please strike the “sometimes”.

the conditional mea culpa reminds me of a low level university employee who couldn’t apologize for calling a young woman the ‘B’ and ‘N’ word without afterwards taking it back.

    Grease monkey, please.
To state the obvious, y’all feeding the troll r giving her exactly what she wants: negative attention. The posts about her make the blog about her. The last coupla months have been relatively – and blissfully – free of troll food

Eric, I’m pretty sure 08 was the year furd made a concerted run at petersen. No way was he leaving Boise then. But, like I said, w big east realignment maybe Ucla or asu gets him. But I doubt it.

  • Will

Poor Joe Stiglich is probably confused about the explosion of comments on the board from Moren, as I doubt JO had time to fill him in about the illustrious ‘career’ of Morencs.

Basically Joe, this person is a ‘fan’ of U$C (despite not getting admitted to the school), and has spent the past 7 YEARS of his life posting on Cal blogs bashing the team (often times at 5 or 6 am, and sadly, during holidays too). And yes, you read it correctly….YEARS, not months.

JO refused to ban him, and you can’t really blame him – who knows what someone as mentally unstable as Moren would do if his only love in life (hopping in front of his computer at 6am on a daily basis) is taken away from him? I don’t know whether you share the same philosophy, but I’m just hoping that you take his mental incapacity into consideration when looking at his postings over the next decade or so…don’t judge.

  • MoreNCsarecoming

Will – your chances of getting your facts straight is just about on par with razetheoaks (the former name of Cal state poster until it got banned on SF Gate) making an accurate bet. Then again what can you expect from a Social Welfare major.

    Press f5 and get cattoused.

  • Will

I think the only person pressing F5 here is the person with 8 posts in 2 days.

Joe, see the problem here? Please Moren, get yourself some help:
