Basketball: Ducks lose another freshman guard

By Jeff Faraudo
Wednesday, November 30th, 2011 at 10:20 am in Basketball, Pac-12 news.

Nine days after Oakland’s Jabari Brown left the program, Oregon lost another freshman guard when Bruce Barron defected.

Coach Dana Altman was in no mood to discuss the situation at length: “We’ll move forward with the 13 players we have on the team. I’m not going to talk anymore about guys not on the team. We’ll just move on from here.”

Update: Word from Eugene is the two guys are buddies and may be looking to sign elsewhere as a “package deal.”

Elsewhere, the Pac-10 won two of three and is 8-1 for the week . . .

   – USC 56, UC Riverside 35: The Trojans (4-4) got 11 points from Greg Allen and beat a UCR team with a win over Washington State. USC held the Highlanders to 11 second-half points.

   – Washington State 69, Grambling State 37: Faisal Aden scored 12 points and Brock Motum had 11 points and 10 rebounds, leading the Cougars (3-4) past the Tigers (0-6) in Pullman, Wash.

   – Colorado State 65, Colorado 64: Spencer Dinwiddie scored 16 points, but the Buffaloes (4-3) shot 37 percent in a loss at Fort Collins, Colo.

And in news related to upcoming Cal opponents . . .

   – Creighton 85, San Diego State 83: The Aztecs (7-2), who host Cal on Sunday, lost at home to the Bluejays (6-0), despite 21 points from point guard Xavier Thames, a sophomore transfer from Washington State.

   — UNLV 94, UC Santa Barbara 88: The No. 18 Runnin’ Rebels (8-0) needed two overtimes and 34 points from Mike Moser to beat the Gauchos (4-2) in Santa Barbara. Cal visits Vegas on Dec. 23. UCSB, which plays at Cal on Dec. 19, got 36 points from Orlando Johnson.

Wow, what is going on in Eugene?

  • milo

I guess there’s not enough shoes or money in Niketown to keep those kids happy. Poor Phil Knight.

  • Juancho

That obnoxious basketball court is probably making the kids naucious.

  • Batmansf

Damn, That Donald Duck voodoo doll I have was supposed to work on FOOTBALL, not basketball!

Please do not offer these guys scholarships, regardless of their potential. I smell problems with both and how they left their program up in Duckville. Very reminiscent of Franklin here at Cal last year.

I think the first year leave before the new year is the new one-and-done. You’re going to see more of this for kids that have to be the center of attention and get big stats, or who can’t deal with school.

  • Cal Sipe

My source tells me that both will sign with SDSU.

Maybe Dana doesn’t want any potheads on the team? That could be a BIG problem in Eugene. Well adios suckers, enjoy the Big West conference.

I think Milo and Sipe are both correct. The “hot-shot” freshman want to start right away and then jump to the NBA. I hear they’ll both end up as Aztecs.

Sounds like they need to find a place where they do not have to go to class.
