Jeff, I hope you’re out there beating the bushes on the Solomon story. Very sad day for the Bears.

Everything I hear about him (family, background, etc.) is very positive, so I’m hopeful that whatever he did to get suspended will be just a bump in the road. Here’s to this being a distant memory come March, and not another Omondi Amoke situation.

I have no idea what goes into Sagarin’s rankings, but I imagine the difference between Cal and Stanford at this point is one of those “how have the teams you’ve played played” things.

The Cardinal have blown the bad teams off the court, and showed well against ‘Cuse in what was essentially a home game for the Orange, but their only quality win is against OK St., who are turning out not to be as good as some people thought (lost to VA Tech and barely beat Tulsa at home). I don’t think there’s a quality win among the teams Stanford has beaten.

Cal hasn’t exactly beaten great teams, but among the Bears’ victims, Denver beat St. Mary’s and Georgia beat Notre Dame.

Still, though, if you go by the eye test, you have to admit that Stanford is playing better in general at this point than Cal. Not saying that’s how it will be at the end of the year or when they face each other, but it is what it is.

I haven’t checked out the quality of Stanford’s opponents (the names sound like they are reasonable and, in most cases, better than the small schools the Bears have played), but they have been killing most of the them. Seems like they should be ranked much higher than 53 on Sagarin. Maybe someone can justify why the Sagarin ranking is so low. By the way, I’m not a Stanford fan.

I swear Sagarin is a closet Golden Bear. I really don’t know what we’ve done to earn #20 in any poll, but I’ll take it. If we beat San Diego State or UNLV on the road, it’ll be justified, but oddly, even if we split those, we’ll be dropped out of all the top 25s.
