BYU’s Jake Heaps, once regarded as one of the nation’s top high school quarterback prospects, is leaving Provo after two seasons.
A story in the Seattle Times lists Heaps’ possible transfer destinations as Cal, Washngton, Washington State and USC. He attended Skyline HS in Issaquah, Wash.
Here is a story from the Salt Lake Tribune.

Berkeley v. Salt Lake City? It doesn’t get much more polar opposite than those two cities. I was hoping Cal could land him out of high school but maybe better late than never!!

Not sure about this one, he’ll be behind in our depth chart as well.

Sadly, this is also the polar opposite of Cal…
“He opened his sophomore season as the starter, but struggled early. Heaps was pulled in the third quarter against Utah State and Nelson came in and produced a come-from-behind victory. Nelson was named the starter after that. “

He’d have to sit out a year, and who knows where we’ll be then?

Seems like Wassu with the new pass happy coach close to home would be the best fit.

Character flaw if heaps wants to bail when – worst case scenario – he gets 1 year “for sure” after the sr qb graduates. Leader? Competitor?
Also shows that 4/5 star evaluations of hs kids is WAY OVER rated. Dillon the 4/5 star rb at $c – same scenario.
That said, looks like we landed 4/5 star OT Christian Okafor (Westbury, HOuston) http://sbn.to/uINPuC
We need ol and looks like jm’s return is paying dividends in recruiting, too.
Go Bears!

The big question here is has joe been let go and now jeff faurado is our leader?

Joe Stiglich has not been let go. He covers the A’s for our papers and is at the baseball winter meetings. I will be covering the Bears at the Holiday Bowl and beyond.

You can look at it this way, transfers sit one season. ZM plays one more season. From there forward it’s straight competition. He gets to compete right away once eligible. He might not get it but he could be #2. Guys get NFL jobs as D1 #2 QB.
Otherwise +1 on WSU.

Sounds like Arizona really needs some QB’s. Rich Rod may go after him too.

Heaps would be perfect for WSU – where he can have fun winning the Apple Cup from the Montlake Mutts

I’m on the side that doesn’t want Heaps here. Don’t want any excuses for Zach Kline. This is his team when Maynard is gone.

Many #1 high school qb’s don’t pan out in college, like Mustain and Gilbert and maybe Heaps. Its a little early for anyone to assume Zach is a sure thing. The scouting reports say he is inaccurate.
December 6th, 2011 at 3:04 pm
If you are referring to Zach Kline I can tell you for a fact he is impressively accurate, rolling both left and right, 3 step drop, 7 step drop, all throws. Have seen him several times this year and his O-line is not that good and he makes these throws with just adequate protection. So glad to have him at Cal. Ranked #4 nationwide at QB and recently awarded Gatorade California High school Player of the Year.

I hope so, but i am just questioning Juancho in making Zach the #1 guy already. I am sure all of our roster qb’s had similar things said and written about them as well.

I imagine that Austin Hinder or (whoever is currently 2nd string behind Maynard?) or is that Hinder…will likely be the starter in 2 years.
However, if Zach Kline is a super diaper dandy, ie. Matt Barkley, then he could step in as a Freshman…but that highly unlikely. Tedford’s offensive scheme is considered to be very complex (some people say unecessarily complex) for a newcomer to come right in and take over.

BTW, what’s up with the recruiting updates…I thought I read on Rivals.com that Cal has two recent signees…can anyone confirm?

Kline stood out at elite 11 for accuracy. Hes the highest rated and hyped qb recruit of the tedford era. Not a sure thing though.

I think his best choice is the Washington Schools, CAL is loaded at QB, Bridgford is still a very good QB and really high 2 more waiting in the wings, too so it would be hard.
