Basketball: Beavers bounce back

The Pac-12 is off to a roaring 2-0 start to the week . . .

   — Oregon State 95, Illinois-Chicago 53: The Beavers (7-2) bounced back from their loss to Idaho by dousing the Flames (3-6) in Corvallis, Ore. Jared Cunningham (San Leandro HS) had 16 points and five steals, giving him 155 career thefts. The visitors shot 29.8 percent and had more turnovers (19) than baskets (17).

Meanwhile . . .

   — UCLA coach Ben Howland is giving in to the notion that his big, slow Bruins must play zone defense.

   — Duke’s Coach K impressed by Washington freshman Tony Wroten Jr.

   — UW 7-footer Aziz N’Diaye expects to miss as many as three games with knee injury.

  • Uh Huh!

Thanks for those tid bit updates from around the Pac, JF.

I had to chuckle about the UCLA Smith update, below. I recall complaining about Monty’s not being able to land this big recruit, and you suggested in response that we shouldn’t (paraphrasing) a guy like him you was going to be around only 1, maybe 2, years. Ha! At this point, Smith is looking like a 4 year player, and that’s it. No NBA after that. I’ll still wonder, however, how Smith would have fit into the Cal lineup at this point. I’ll also wonder how his college experience would be going, and how Monty would be able to deal with his (read: with his exercise regimen), had he chosen Cal. Pointless musings, I know….

“Sophomore center Joshua Smith hasn’t played more than 20 minutes in a game since Nov. 21.

“He got tired on Saturday a couple times and asked to come out,” Howland said.

“Howland said Smith, who’s averaging 8.4 points and 5.3 rebounds, isn’t in top physical shape. Smith did some extra running before that game and Monday after practice to improve his stamina.”

He did some extra running before the game? Classic.

“Hey, I took a jog around the block. Why is there no difference in my waistline?”

Totally unrelated, but Jerome Randle is apparently joining the Dallas Mavericks (after playing in Turkey for a few years)! Randle and Kidd on the same team. That’s amazing news, and I’m really happy that Jerome earns his “shot”!
