The 2012 Pac-12 just got a little tougher.

USC quarterback Matt Barkley has announced he will return to USC for his senior season and try to pursue a national championship.

Here’s the story from ESPN.com and from the Los Angeles Times.

Probably making more money @ USuC than he’d make in the NFL. Other than that…who cares?

  • ScottyBear

Just like Matt Leinart…what a mistake

  • Steve W

USC had four juniors the NFL wanted, and two of them decided to come back and finish out their senior seasons. If Cal would have had 4 juniors in the same situation, they all would have jumped to the NFL. Why do I say this? Because every star Cal player in the past 20 years has jumped. Let’s name some…..Rodgers, Best, Vereen, Clements, Dawkins, Lynch, Carter, Gonzalez, Jackson. I know there are more.

What that says about the campus experience at Cal versus SC or Washington (Locker), I don’t know. But it’s maddening to me as a fan.

Steve — That’s a pretty broad generalization. I would think a lot of it has to do with the economic status of the player (and his family). In Vereen’s case, he graduated from Cal, and because of a redshirt year he had one year of eligibility left. (Luck is doing the same thing this year.)

Oh, and Russell White stayed for his senior season, and his draft stock plummeted. As much as I would have liked to see all the players you mention wearing blue & gold for another year, with the sums of money being tossed at them, I can’t blame them.

    @H8sRed … couldn’t agree more … well said!

Most of the Cal guys who went pro came from very modest circumstances and could not and should not have missed the opportunity to cash in on their success for themselves and their families.

I really don’t give a rip what u$c and UMutts guys do.

  • Paul Thomas

Well, USC is certainly going to come back from the bowl ban as the undisputed favorite in the league.

  • Easy Ed

As much as I hate USC, I must say that I wish the best for Matt Barkley. As a So Cal resident I have followed him at USC and he seems like a nice kid, a great guy and of fine character. Best of luck (except against the Bears).

Not too substantial, but the it will be another less scholarship during the lean recruiting years they now face which most people ignore now theat the ban is over.

    Hey Wisdom

What the heck did you just say?

I am simply amazed when it comes to the kind of immature stuff this editor allows to be posted. Where is GOGO Bears who stands for all things PC when we need him?

  • House

    Alex Mack? Cameron Jordan?

  • Steve W.

Russell white’s draft stock plummeted because he was lazy. He didn’t put in the tough off season workouts, gained weight and was not the same player in his senior season. Shame, too, because I still maintain he was the most exciting player I have ever seen in a Cal uniform.

Alex Mack and Cam Jordan were not program changers. Guys like Aaron Rodgers and Desean Jackson were. And Matt Barkley most certaiinly is.
