Football: An avalanche of riches for Cal as Shaq Thompson is third commit of the day

By Jeff Faraudo
Saturday, January 7th, 2012 at 1:35 pm in Football, Recruiting.

This one was no surprise — safety Shaq Thompson of Grant HS in Sacramento confirmed what we already knew when he picked a Cal hat from the table on the sidelines of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio.

“We just all feel real comfortable there and we’re going to change the game,” Thompson said after joining WR Jordan Payton and DT Ellis McCarthy as Cal commits.

Thompson is the younger brother of ex-Cal star and NFL player Syd’Quan Thompson, and is rated the No. 1 defensive back prospect by Rivals.com. Rivals ranks the 6-foot-2, 210-pound Thompson as the No. 7 overall prospect in the country.

Thompson made several big hits in the game, but also had a possible interception slide through his hands.

It’s a spectacular day for Cal recruiting. “It’s probably the best day somebody’s had in at least a couple years at the Army All-American Bowl,” Rivals recruiting analyst Mike Farrell said on NBC.

Still out there as potential Cal commits: DE Arik Armstead of Elk Grove and DT Aziz Shittu of Atwater, both consensus top-30 overall prospects.

Boo! We should have gotten sanders. Seems like a great kid.

  • Rollonubears

Nicest stuff said about cal on national television in my
    Lifetime. Awesome.

  • MoreNCsarecoming

    #5

Everything except for the winning part.

  • Will

Been seeing A LOT of this today: MoreNCS_are_ignored and sanctioned! troll post blocked

Looks like SOMEONE is having a meltdown again!!!

  • GBIRD

HAHAHA!! MoreNC, you must live at home in your mothers basement. You live on this site, and you’re not even a Cal fan. Let me guess.. about 5’9, 230 lbs, receding hairline, showers about twice a week. No job. Ketchup stain on your shirt. And I’m sure all you do is post on different blog sites and talk shit. Hard to imagine IBA is the only one. You are pathetic. Plain and simple. Whenever I see your name on this site I just skip the post because its a waste of my time. Do everyone a favor and never post again and clean yourself the F up. You piece.. GO BEARS

  • MoreNCsarecoming

    GBIRD

Did someone just teach you how to copy and paste?

  • MoreNCsarecoming

Here is a post from one of your fans…

“Another year with heightened anticipation and expectations, only to have our hearts ripped out by all the big boy teams and a lousy bowl that JT can hang his hat on to justify his garbage underachieving excuse for a season.
JT and Tosh recruit with the best of them, we know this.
We send talent to the NFL, every year.
But every year we underachieve and it’s all because JT is a terrible game day coach, and he does NOT motivate the troops to get up for away games. It’s the same sad story every….single….year.

Even with a top notch QB coming in, we all know will play his favorites and Maynard will start next year and we will finish 7-5 in the new stadium, getting mopped up by all the teams who know how to play ball (USC, Oregon, Stanford, Washington, Ohio St).
All my fellow Cal fans are sick and tired of Ted’s act.
We now have everything in place for the Rose Bowl…except the head coach.”

These recruits will never see the Roses.

  • Will

GBIRD, he lives in daddy’s basement, he never talks about his mother (any idea what happened to her?)

  • Dan

Gotta love a troll. When “their” school (it was hard to not laugh typing “their”) gets a recruit, that recruit is the greatest ever. When a top recruit picks Cal over “their” (Ok, I laughed for awhile on that time)school , suddenly $UC didn’t want them – even though $UC offered them. That’s some kind of “logic”. You will never see a troll and credibility in the same zip code.

By the way, I love how trolls, to be sly, have different handles on different sites – like this troll is AngerManagement on sfgate – truly a sad and pathetic way of life it must be for a troll. Seems they have learned how to copy and paste the same lame, tired posts on multiple sites. If trolls weren’t such lowlifes, I would actually feel a bit sorry for them.

On a much cheerier note, I see Cal has vaulted to the #10 ranked class with only 17 commits, wit Armstead still to commit, and a few others leaning this way. This might be a top 5 when all is said and done.

I guess we’ll have to see if JT can finally coach up to his team’s talent level. If not, I think Chris Petersen will love the stacked roster here in a year or two. This is a glorious day for the Golden Bear nation.

  • Wehofx

Great day. I don’t know if this is for real but this is from Twitter:
#Cal commit Jordan Payton: “We have so many ppl coming that aren’t even committed yet…shock for a lot of ppl coming in next couple wks.”
Anyone else smelling Roses? Go Bears!

  • covinared

Scanctions phase 2. Its only going to get worse.

  • SteveNTEXAS

Great recruiting- hope it leads to more. I was wondering where the troll was when our so-so basketball team beat a really sorry one.

  • Raf

Payton must have removed that tweet, don’t see it either. But feeling a top 5 class for sure. All seems a little questionable… where there’s smoke…

  • Kent

Like many of other Bear fans on this site predicted…2012 was going to be a huge year for recruiting…2013 will likely also be a strong recruiting year for Cal. But the big question remains…Can Tedford actually pull together a team that performs up to it capabilities…(remember the 2007 team that featured 12 future NFL players ended up only 7-6).

Tedford has been been very successful in bringing in top talent to Cal during his tenure at Cal…he just has not been able to get the team to perform on the field as strong as their talent. I hope Tedford is up to the task this time around.

  • Tdogg

Come on man, those who say Tedford has failed with top talent cannot be more wrong. Sure, Cal has consistently had star players that go on to the NFL (like Desean, Marshawn), but those types of players are far and few in between. The overall quality of the players on average still pales in comparison to USC and Texas. If you watched Cal play the elite teams, it’s really clear USC and Texas have better players than Cal. They are clearly bigger and faster. So to say Tedford has failed with great talent is totally inaccurate. What happens the next few years will be telling. The jury is still out, but finally Cal can bring in the top talent to compete with the likes of USC and Texas. Cal will finally have a class that is better than USC’s for the first time in a long time. Go Bears!

  • Rocko

If it was all about the coaching, Kiffin would have won with the Raiders and at Tennessee. Recruiting has a whole lot to do with it. Barkley’s coming back next year, but with the loss of scholies the next three years at Cheater U. Dont expect much in ’13-’15.

  • Steve W

There are times when I am amused by the Moron’s posts, and I sometimes totally agree with his musings when it comes to the shortcomings of our HC. But it’s times like this – in a real feel-good moment for Cal football fans – that you realize what a loser this guy truly is.

  • milo

    Rollllll on you Bears…………………….

  • c98

    Whew. Glad Shaq came though.

  • Pc

Shaq’s gonna become a legend like big bro. :)

  • Kent

Tdogg just look at Tedford’s record…

2002 – Cal is favored to win 5 of their 12 games…Cal wins 7 games.

2003 – Cal is favored to win 8 of their 14 games…Cal wins 8 games.

2004 – Cal is favored to win 11 of their 12 games…Cal wins 10 games.

2005 – Cal is favored to win 10 of their 12 games…Cals wins 8 games.

2006 – Cal is favored to win 12 of their 13 games…Cal wins 10 games.

    2007 – Cal is favored to win 10 of thier 13 games…Cal wins 7.

    2008 – Cal is favored to win 11 of their 13 games…Cal wins 9.

    2009 – Cal is favored to win 11 of their 13 games…Cal wins 8.

    2010 – Cal is favored to win 7 of their 12 games…Cal wins 5.

    2011 – Cal is favored to win 6 of their 13 games…Cal wins 6.

2005 through 2010 seasons are six CONSECUTIVE seasons in which Cal’s on field performance was clearly BELOW expectations. In each of those 6 seasons, Tedford’s team would lose at least 2 games in which Cal was a “solid” favorite and would rarely offset these “upset losses” with vicotories when Cal was an underdog.

While I recognize that Tedford deserves kudos for assembling teams that are talented enough to be routinely favored to win 11 of 13 games in a season…what has been undeniable is that Tedford has NOT inspired his teams to play to the level of their EXPECTATIONS.

Facts are facts…6 of Tedford 10 years, his Cal teams have performed BELOW expectations (I only count seasons which the team wins 2 or more games LESS than expectated as poor seasons.

As I look to the future, given USC’s recruiting sanctions coupled with the completion of Cal’s new state of the art athletic facilities, Cal is going to recruit top talent over the next few years. Cal is going to be favored to win 11 of 13 games a season once again…Tedford will need those teams to win 11 or 12 games and make a BCS Bowl appearance sometime during the 2013 – 2015 season.

  • Kent

Just recognized my typo…in 2011 Cal won 7 games. But overall point does not change.

  • Jabes

Yes Kent. There were glimmers of hope this year–before San Diego. When was the last time Cal won a competitive game with any visibility? @Oregon in 2007? Before that, @ Vegas Bowl?

More and more over time, when expectations and visibility rise, Tedford’s teams don’t. That and the tendency to let blowouts get away from him are marks of bad team preparation.

I like coach. I appreciate where he has taken Cal. I hope he has learned and will grow. Maybe the new facilities will unlock the passion and hubris he had during his early years.

If not– Keep Tosh and Gould, and rebuild.

  • ho

why don’t all you Tedford bashers wait until after signing day before ripping on your own team? you don’t think the recruits read these things? Why make it harder for the recruiters working their butt off trying to bring all these top players in?

  • Rocko

Kent, if you had to do all that research to make a point, may I make a suggestion that you pick another college team to follow!

  • Kent

    Rocko, Ho, and Tdogg,

I guess the truth hurts…one of the beautiful things about the internet is the availability to data…so when people (Tdogg) state their opinions based on “supposed” facts…they run the risk of having their points “blown up” when put to the scrutiny of the actual facts.

  • Takeoffthatredshirt

    Kent, jabes, other angry people:

What about the victory over Michigan st in 2008?

There are valid criticism of Tedford out there but high expectations are not the fault of the coaches. Lofty expectations were created when Tedford resurrected the program. Would he be a good coach under your definition if we were predicted at 1-10 and went 3-8?

I’m hardly a tedford loyalist but I don’t agree with your logic. If he can’t win in the new stadium with better players he will be out. Why bash the program publicly till then? As much as I get frustrated with the program I still hope Teddy can recapture the magic. It’s called being a fan.

  • wehofx

    TDogg & Takeoff, agree.

I continue to drink the Kool Aide. During jt’s tenure we’ve had 4/5 future nfl players on o & d. However, 1 – 22 and then the back ups who play significant minutes 23 – 44 have not been the caliber of $c or ut. To get to bcs that’s where we need to improve. Depth.

I’m not sure if zm can take us to a a bcs game based on the big step backwards he took against ut. I hope he proves me wrong. I also hope jt opens the qb competition back up during spring practice. I think zk and the rest of this great incoming class in 2/3 years. If not, then jt should be fired.

    Go Bears! Keep’em coming. Arik?

  • Nor-Cal Scott

While I hate to admit it, Kent makes his point. However, the 2012 schedule we will be underdogs vs Ohio State, USC, Oregon, & probably Washington when the game is played. We can beat WA, but OSU, USC, & Oregon have too much talent. The missing link is a solid, top tier pac12 QB. Tedford has these kids in house, but they must be developed & groomed to step in when called upon.

  • Suttree

Considering the state of things pre-Tedford how can anyone call a 10 win season under performing? It isn’t until 07 and on that you can even begin to make a case like that.

  • Tdogg

Kent, I don’t disagree with you on how Tedford has fallen short of expectations in recent years. But some of those expectations were unrealistic. It was Tedford’s early success (especially 2004 with Mr. Rodgers and a gang of underrated overachievers) that created those illusions and unrealistic expectations from fans. But what I was talking about was strictly about the talent of the team or the lack of top talent at most positions. If you just watch the games against the elite teams, Cal clearly did not have as much talent across the board as the USC’s and Oregon’s and Texas’s. But with the last and this incoming class, Cal is finally starting to get the elite talent to compete with the big boys. So I would say the great expectations some fans place on Cal football are finally more in line with the talent on the team. The jury is still out but with the old gang of coaches back, the next few years could be the ones we’ve been waiting for. Go Bears!
