Basketball: Two weeks in the books in Pac-12

Two road winners in the conference on Sunday — Cal and Arizona. No small achievement: The home team is 16-6 through two weekends of Pac-12 play.

Still without a conference road victory: Colorado, Oregon State, UCLA, USC, Utah and WSU.

Here’s my story on Cal’s 77-60 win over Oregon.

   — Arizona 57, USC 46: This one wasn’t as close as the final score — the Wildcats led 32-16 at halftime. Jesse Perry had 20 points and Solomon Hill had 11 points and 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the weekend. Maurice Jones scored 14 points for the Trojans (5-12, 0-4) but shot 7 for 24 in two losses this weekend.

Todd Bozeman former Cal Coach who got us in trouble for paying a recruit $30k in 1994 or so has been suspended by Morgan State for physical contact with a player.

There’s the Bozeman thread. I really liked him and thought he would bring Cal to the very top of the NCAA but that was before the payola disaster.

As the announcer of the game yesterday said, as I have been saying for months, Gutierrez for Pac-12 MVP! Having Cobb play shooting guard, allowing Jorge to play the point, shows his skills at that position, making it more likely that my second prediction — Jorge will make the final squad of an NBA team next year as a point guard — much more likely.

Allen Crabbe is starting to heat up. His bombs and Soloman’s presence down low will be the difference this year when we win games on the road.
Can’t wait for the game at Haas Thursday!
Is Rossi anywhere close to playing?

  • Defense is fun to watch. Solomon/Kravish protect the rim: 5 blocks yesterday! Jorge and Cobbs and Crabbe also are VERY solid defensively, watch the tape. Crabbe with 12 boards/9 defensive: impressive! If we can get a little more outta the bench, and provide some blowouts that let the starters rest a bit – this team could get ROLLING thru the pac! Go Bears!

  • Any more news on Arik Armstead playing hoops at Cal?

Only problem, Gobears49,is that Cobbs is playing the point, and Jorge the 2. I don’t think that this alignment at all hurts Jorge’s chances for the NBA.
