Football: Kiesau to UW; Tedford, Barbour release statements on coaching staff changes
By Jeff Faraudo
Tuesday, January 17th, 2012 at 12:39 pm in Football.
Passing game cooordinator/wide receivers coach Eric Kiesau is on his way to Washington, joining defensive line coach/recruiting star Tosh Lupoi as new members of Steve Sarkisian’s staff in Seattle.
Cal released statements this afternoon from coach Jeff Tedford and athletic director Sandy Barbour on the changes that have taken place in the past 24 hours or so. Their remarks may not answer many of your — or my questions — but here’s what they are willing to say so far:
JEFF TEDFORD: “Tosh and Eric have decided to take other jobs, and we wish them the best. When people have career opportunities they make decisions based upon a wide array of reasons that are important to them. We appreciate their contributions to Cal football, and we exhausted all of our resources to try to retain Tosh and Eric within the confines and continuity of our coaching staff, but both chose to take advantage of new opportunities.
“We will proceed to replace them with quality coaches who will continue to stand for what the University of California and our football program represent, just as Tosh and Eric did.”
SANDY BARBOUR: “Tosh and Eric are outstanding football coaches that did a terrific job during their tenures on the Cal staff. We certainly valued everything they brought to our football program and appreciate their time with us. We did all we were able to do to have them remain at Cal and appreciate our community’s willingness to assist in that effort. We remain excited and confident about the direction of Cal football under the leadership of Jeff Tedford.”

Did we need those statements? I’d like to know what they’re doing about retaining recruits and who they’re going to hire into those positions. I don’t care what they think would be a magnanimous-sounding statement about two guys who we all know bailed on the program under the most suspect of circumstances.
January 17th, 2012 at 1:11 pm
Chicken shit statements. Chicken shit cover our asses statements like “excited and confident under the direction of Jeff Tedford”.
Who the hell are we going to hire?
Tedford’s comments sound just as detached and passionless as always. Is he wearing his sunglasses in your mind too when you read his comment ? No question.
Time to figure something out quick because tomorrow is the deadline for season tickets Sandy. Extend it again, there’s enough empty seats as it is with the high prices.

Any word on Ron Gould or Jim Michalzak ?
January 17th, 2012 at 1:25 pm
Well, the recruits have reason to call Tosh a traitor. He spoke of Cal to them for years, and had them all ready to become Golden Bears for life, as he HAD been. The promises to young, impressionable men, understand the “business” of it all, but are betrayed, nonetheless.
It is, after all, all about money. California has none, not the school, not the UC system, not the State. It makes me wonder how much of California’s federal taxes go towards Washington’s (the State’s) higher education. Anyways . . .
If you trace the problem back far enough, you’ll get to the economy and those wonderful boys from Wall Street. So thank Fabrice Tourre! Go figure, a Stanfurd grad.
January 17th, 2012 at 1:27 pm
To Tosh and Eric, best of luck, although I don’t think Tosh will be getting any reunion notices. You should always take the money, it may not be there next time. However Tosh may want to re-read the section on “Burning Bridges” and “The Implied Value of Timing”.
But here is the real point: WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL? Recruiter of the year? Are you kidding? Cal has been under-recruiting for years. The problem is Cal accepts the Holiday Bowl as a badge of honor.
UCB is a premier university situated in a cultural, financial and socially relevant landscape that should attract the elite athlete who has the foresight to appreciate the value of a unique academic institution. While I may be preaching to the choir, there are legions of gifted athletes, in all disciplines, that can understand this message. Cal will never be a ‘one-size fits all’, but that is exactly why it is special.
While I understand the special relationship between someone like Tosh and Shaq Thompson, UW didn’t make Shaq an offer he couldn’t refuse and if he follows Tosh to UW then more power to him. But if you are willing to trade the UCB experience for UW, just because of Tosh, then choosing Cal was a mistake from the beginning.
Cal should be a top 15 recruiting class every year whoever the recruiting coordinator. Selling Cal to the best and brightest athletes in the country should be like selling Top Dogs after midnight!
January 17th, 2012 at 1:32 pm
Mike I like your comment and agree. But I would like to add that I feel Tedford has hurt that Cal recruiting possibilities with lackluster performances year after year.
More or less it has become a distant memory when Rodgers was here and our program was nationally relevant.
So kids who see the great beauty of our school, do it against the realistic expectation that they will not be on the national stage, in a positive sense, when it comes to football.
Tedford has not beat Chip Kelly.
Tedford has not beat Sarkisian.
Tedford has not beat David Shaw.
Tedford has not beat Lane Kiffin.
Tedford got rocked by Mike Leach years ago, now he’s at Wassu.
If this class falls apart, blow the thing up and let’s start from scratch. New coach, new energy, new aggressiveness.
January 17th, 2012 at 1:39 pm
So it is true. I wonder what stings the most: the loss of our dream class this year and for years to come as we will surely lose out on so many elite talents to uw or the fact that we are being out bid by another mid level conference foe as opposed to the usual suspects, i.e. the alabama’s and texas’s of the world? what does this say about our program’s status in the landscape? we have an ambitious yet bloated athletic program that happens to be one of the most bankrupt programs in the country and that is costing its most valuable asset, our football program, and its ability to compete even with the likes of washington. we may have saved our baseball program for a few more years but this department has some serious decisions to make because we CANNOT be out bid by washington.
January 17th, 2012 at 1:39 pm
Juancho – even though you have been far more forgiving than I have been with respect to Tedford, amen brother.
Someone really to ask the HARD questions. Barbour’s statement reads almost like what we saw out of Tripoli before Khaddafi’s fall or any of the bottom-feeding Republican candidates – a total detachment from reality.
I just want answers and responsibility taking, instead of platitudes, for once – was Tedford blindsided by this and, regardless of the answer, what does it say about his leadership? What did he do to attempt to hold on to these guys? What really happened with Oregon and the injury-faking last year? Did he offer, or was he asked, to make economic concessions on his own contract? Were promises made to Tosh and Eric that went unfulfilled?
January 17th, 2012 at 1:40 pm
Still no word on Arik?
I wonder if he ends up not enrolling early anywhere, because of Tosh’s timing.
January 17th, 2012 at 1:41 pm
Now is the time for the university to decide who we are. Need some more $ in the coffers. Get the best and brightest and pay for them! Otherwise this same BS is going to happen every january by low lifes like Sark. I would love to see Tedford slug Sark when they shake hands after this year’s game.
January 17th, 2012 at 1:43 pm
I want to know what “We did all we were able to do to have them remain at Cal and appreciate our community’s willingness to assist in that effort” meant. Specifically, “our community’s willingness to assist.”
Let me guess. Some of our big time backers came to the rescue, but too late, because Tedford and Sandy didn’t have their finger on the pulse of this fiasco early enough.
January 17th, 2012 at 2:04 pm
i don’t think tedford and barbour should get off so easily
January 17th, 2012 at 2:05 pm
what’s jerry rice doing? let’s hire him.
January 17th, 2012 at 2:16 pm
Sandy needs to resign, move Tedford up to AD, hire Justin Wilcox or some other steel kahuna’d young gun for new head coach and move forward. Tedford and those stupid sunglasses need to be replaced with someone like Harbaugh. Look at the 49ers – same team, new coach, heading toward a super bowl. When was the last time you saw one of those “Tedford is God” t-shirts?
He can’t compete anymore against the new regime of Pac-12 coaches. Same old pro-style predictable offense. Hate to say uit, but I love watching Chip Kelly coach. He plays to kick ass! Tedford looks like a spectator on the sidelines.
January 17th, 2012 at 2:30 pm
We lose a couple assistants and recruits, and so many treat it like the team plane just went down, or we got hit with sc like sanctions. Oye veh! I wonder if most of you posters deep down are happy about these developments because it gives you more to complain about. Keep things in perspective. You are showing signs of a deep inferiority losers complex. Its just a sport. Its supposed to bring plesure in life, not misery. Look what you are doing to yourselves.
January 17th, 2012 at 2:37 pm
Gee, thanks, Covinared. I live a miserable, pain filled existence which sports help to distract me from. Now you have me depressed on both sports and life.
January 17th, 2012 at 2:39 pm
Juancho — In all seriousness, what did you expect Tedford and Barbour to say? The fact is, UW is more flush with cash, and Cal couldn’t compete with that — this time. Your response is almost as ridiculous as the rules that won’t allow a player to transfer within the conference, but will allow a coach to recruit for one school and then recruit for another the very next day.
January 17th, 2012 at 2:39 pm
Follett threw his helmet in the ring. I hope we pick him up.
“Resume is off and away, time to pray.. Up up and away! Oh it’s a glorious day! Praise our Lord! #calgang”
January 17th, 2012 at 2:43 pm
At the rate things are going, I wouldn’t be surprised if we had a massive earthquake the week before opening day, and the west side of the stadium fell into the sahpc.
January 17th, 2012 at 2:45 pm
LOL!
January 17th, 2012 at 2:54 pm
New student athletic center, renovated memorial stadium not enough money to pay the staff. We made a choice and the facilities had to be redone. I don’t fault these guys for leaving for the money but come on guys Sarks timing let’s you know this was a shot at the program and any sense of prefessionalism should have compelled these two to wait until AFTER Feb 1st to depart. They want to go? So be it, they’ll call us before we’ll call them. The didn’t just burn the bridge, they nuked it.
January 17th, 2012 at 3:10 pm
H8sRed, I expected them to address what was being done to ensure we don’t lose the recruiting class. I expected
I expected a press conference. Not a cowardly written statement of 3 paragraphs.
I expected some clarity around whether there are more changes, i.e., more people leaving or if this is it.
Had I been Barbour I would have held a press conference and had Tedford and all his coordinators / staff there to show we’re going to fight for our program. Imagine a press conference on sportscenter later that shows some passion and pride from the coaches staying ? That would give something to counteract how Cal will look foolish on sportscenter tonight.
Instead the statement says nothing.
I guess you’re right those H8sRed. You’re always right. And thanks for calling my comments ridiculous. You almost made me feel bad in this otherwise wonderful day filled with great and positive news.
January 17th, 2012 at 3:14 pm
Dying for some good news. C’mon Arik. Tell Sark that “you may be able to buy off our coaches, but you’ll never take away the Calgang.”
January 17th, 2012 at 3:15 pm
Randum, Arik Armstead confirmed last night Cal is no longer in consideration.
It’s between Notre Dame and Auburn. His brother wants to go to Auburn. He wants to go to Notre Dame. So the family is trying to figure out what to do.
The rumour is they’re both going to Notre Dame.
January 17th, 2012 at 3:19 pm
Jeff – with all the attention and visitors to the blog the past two days you guys should re-negotiate the advertising fees you guys charge your partners.
Get more $$$.
January 17th, 2012 at 3:22 pm
FYI, per ESPN’s recruiting blog Dozier may now open up his recruitment and visit Washington given the Kiesau news.
January 17th, 2012 at 3:25 pm
No, this isn’t the end of the world. it isn’t a plane crashing. No one died.
In our relatively unimportant world of college athletics, it is just the effects of mediocrity. Those who think 5-7, 7-6, and even 8-5 records with trips to mid-level and lower-level bowls is good because it is better than Holmoe/Gilbertson can certainly be labeled the “losers” with inferiority complexes because they do not believe our university should attempt to be the best at everything it does. They settle, and then happily defend the status quo, and launch ad hominem attacks at anyone who disagrees with them.
Am I happy that two of our better recruiters and potential HC replacements just left for UW, which was on our the same pace with us but made the commitment to go with a young, exciting coach willing to take chances, while they too are undergoing a stadium remodel? Of course not. I am pissed as hell that our athletic department let it happen, and has shown virtually no indication that this is a major issue. Just more of the same – nothing to see here folks, just Tedford et al. pretently that there is nothing wrong and the future is bright. UW wants to win, and is backing up that desire. They will very likely be significantly better than us simply because of this energy and commitment. Just as Oregon did with Kelly. Just as WSU and Arizona are doing. Maybe even UCLA, which at least tried to find young gun coaches before settling for Mora. When was the last time anyone said that about Cal – that it wants to win and will take chances, will be creative, will have balls?
Cal couldn’t compete with UW? Cut Tedford’s salary in half and give that half to his staff, and you’re easily there.
If we are going to be mediocre, which is precisely what the football team has been since 2005 (in my opinion), or since 2007 (in everyone else’s, includsing virtually every national sports columnist, except for three or four kool-aid drinkers), we can get a young coach at 1/3 the salary to do the same thing.
January 17th, 2012 at 3:30 pm
Just wondering, but if Cal’s coaching salary budget is so low, where does UCLA’s stand? They are also in the UC system and should have the same constraints, no?
January 17th, 2012 at 3:35 pm
The facts are Cal needs to get up, dust ourselves off and act!
I don’t know what will happen but Sandy and Tedford just got slapped and look foolish.
The money is available to raise all our assitant coach salaries to a higher level. Donors have pledged it. Sandy said no. Big mistake.
Time for her to go and maybe move Ted to AD so we don’t have to pay him off for nothing and move on with a clean slate.
Drastic action is needed. Hope all the power players are rallying together and ready to take this on full steam ahead.
California Golden Bears need our good people to unite and fight back!
January 17th, 2012 at 3:52 pm
Juancho — I want some of whatever your’re smoking. You really think a press conference solves everything? You think that’s what would put recruits and their families at ease?
I’m happy (that’s a relative term) that instead of wasting their time with meaningless media platitudes, Tedford and his staff are instead maxing out their cellphone minutes and visiting recruits and their families to assure them that (1) Cal is still the finest public university in the world; (2) Cal’s long neglected facilities are now the best in the Pac-12; (3) the foundation has already been laid that will ensure Cal Football will be a top-level competitor for a long time; and (4) the departure of two lower level coaches under sleazy circumstances and timing does nothing to change numbers 1 through 3.
January 17th, 2012 at 4:12 pm
Bad move tedford. You should have fired Pendergast to make room for Tosh.Who would you rather hsave-an ace recruiter or a largely ineffective D-coordonator like Pendergast. Terible shaping of priorities.
January 17th, 2012 at 4:27 pm
I feel like Tedford should voluntarily take a pay cut to his huge salary and put that money into a pool to retain his assistants. Ugh.
January 17th, 2012 at 4:31 pm
I think Sandy and JT are scrambling and busy .. and I suspect that they’re very uncomfortable with the situation. JT has to produce … it’s all on him. He is responsible for recruiting and the buck stops with him.
January 17th, 2012 at 4:40 pm
2.8 million bucks stop with him.
January 17th, 2012 at 4:47 pm
Quick note on Arik. “Armond” said Cal was out for Arik last night. We have no word from Arik himself.
January 17th, 2012 at 4:48 pm
Btw anyone calling Pendergast “ineffective” d coordinator doesn’t know football.
January 17th, 2012 at 4:52 pm
Wow. Got busy. Wow! This blog is burning up. What ha8s red said.
EK? No big deal. He’s making a vertical move. I get it. Now if it was Mihalczik, I’d be freaking. I wonder what sark see’s in ek? because it sure isn’t obvious to me.
I live in so cal and I recall reading during n chow buy out – but can’t substantiate now – that ucla and osu paid the lowest in the pac 12. I’d also guess utah is in same tier.
Erik, I’m still drinking the kool aide but I agree we’ve been mediocre since ’07. The unprecedented run of bowl games during jt’s run is misleading because of the stupid amount of bowls now. But to me, Cal is the kind of school where we should hope to make a serious rose/now bcs run every 5 years. jt did it in ’05. we should tolerate a bad year in every 5. ’10. I think/hope we make a serious run in 2013. jt is the reason for the funding for the hpc and Memorial reno.
I agree, jt should put some of his salary back into the coaching pool in exchange for bumping up his rose/bcs bonus clause – I’m assuming that’s gotta be in his contract. Nothing like performance based pay. I wonder how all the pac 12/bcs hc’s with mediocre records and fat contracts are going to deal with the escalation in position coach salary that sark has increased in a BIG way. Especially the new rocks stars, leach and rich rod.
Finally, anyone know what the new zona hc and mora are getting paid?
January 17th, 2012 at 4:52 pm
I, for one, am glad that they put out a three-line press release instead of any press conference. They have far more important things to be doing at just this moment than orchestrating a media circus.
January 17th, 2012 at 5:23 pm
I don’t deny that yes, it was JT’s early success that acted as a catalyst for the SAHPC, but that in no way justifies the program’s current and continuing of mediocrity. I’d also like to ask whether you disagree that somebody else other than JT could have brought about the facility renovation at some point close to when it actually happened. We were due for a new facility for a very, very long time, and I believe that it would have happened just as well under someone other than JT’s watch. I do not believe that it had to be JT or only JT uniquely could have made it possible. I just feel like there’s too much undue credit being given to JT when it comes to the SAHPC when it could have been more like the timing, availability of funds, and other factors that happened to be in place when he took the helm at Cal that made it possible.
January 17th, 2012 at 5:36 pm
I’d like to see the entire football coaching staff unite with a team photo and a message for their incoming class. Now that Okafor and Kline are there, let them join the photo and raise the CalGang banner!
January 17th, 2012 at 5:40 pm
I do see Juancho’s point. While time consuming, press conference or not, JT and Barbour could have used this opportunity to show that there are good measures being taken place to help Cal get through this “crisis” and to assure and give confidence to the recruits, who are apparently so shaken up by it, to continue to place their trust and faith into the program. It was disappointing. Cal looks really weak.
January 17th, 2012 at 5:43 pm
so you picked clancy over tosh way to go tedford .. its time sandy must go as well as jeffery NOW!!!!!!!!!!!! bring in rod woodson and make him and gould co head coaches and sprinkle in with some pain train and get someone like a kevin greene from GB
January 17th, 2012 at 5:44 pm
CalGang,
The football program will thrive. Don’t listen to all these complainers and winners. Most of these winners don’t even have season tickets and/or don’t show up to games, so don’t let them make any impact on your decisions to come to Cal. Cal is a great institution which goes beyond Tosh. Just keep in mind that Tosh has his half a mill and a boat thanks to Cal. Point is if you work hard you will have a great time at Cal. And Cal will get to Rose Bowl on our terms no sleazy WU terms, and I’m proud of that. And I will be buying my season tickets next year because this is my team. And I couldn’t be more proud of it.
January 17th, 2012 at 6:10 pm
Shrewd move by Sarkisian to save his job! Think about Cal’s recruiting Class…most of the top players are WRs and D. Lineman. Steal Cal’s coaches and hope they can flip a few recruits!
Probably won’t work…but feels like a desparate move by Sarkisian.
Normally losing a position coach is not a big deal..but Tosh Lupoi was the “face” of Cal’s recruiting effort and was clearly more effective than any other reruiter Cal has ever had. Kisseau leaving…not a huge deal…but Lupoi’s departure sent shock waves all around the west coast.
It will be interesting in the face of all the panicking around the program how the leader in Tedford handles this! I think he will stay calm…and be a pretty effective leader. I am actually a critic of Tedford from a game day coach…but I actually think these type of chaotic situations is where is calm and principled leadership style will be effective. Let’s see.
January 17th, 2012 at 6:13 pm
LMAO. Thanks, Jon. There certainly is no reason for Cal to put up with winners.
January 17th, 2012 at 6:23 pm
Win or lose, I think JT would show great integrity by NOT meeting ScummySarq after the game.
I love dogs; I really despise Mutts.
UW, a most mediocre school, should adopt Swine as their mascot.
January 17th, 2012 at 6:38 pm
I’ll have to look up Tedford’s salary, but if you took less than 10% of it and gave it to Lupoi I’m sure it would have exceeded what UW offered. Assuming Tedford thought of it, which I doubt he did, most likely he will wish he did, and acted upon making it happen, as down the road when he realizes that his best recruiter (far and away) is gone and that he was his best hope to revive his (Tedford’s) fortunes in the future.
January 17th, 2012 at 6:53 pm
they gave him a house, a boat and 500k. they basically are trying to buy our recruits, hoping he can swing a couple. it’s ridiculous. it’s way more than 10% of tedford’s salary. they already offered him a 100% raise for doing the exact same thing. he turned it down for a 300% raise at UW.
January 17th, 2012 at 6:56 pm
it’s a shame we can’t get more guys who are already cal fans. we get a few, but when i was in high school, i’d have jumped all over a chance to play at cal, no matter who was coaching. maybe we need to get more folks out to the games. even when they stink, they’re still a great outing.
January 17th, 2012 at 7:11 pm
Tis is about dollars and cents, not about Tedford. The only thing that Tedford is guilty of is giving a lying disloyal pile of crap 26 year old a chance to coach when no one else would. Tosh can go to Hell (after 11 1/2 months a year of rain maybe he is). He is free to take the money but you don’t crap on your Padrone!
January 17th, 2012 at 7:19 pm
Rollon we would have more Cal fans if we posted in other places. Fans of other schools post on ESPN and CBS and so kids reading those stories hear nice things about those schools.
I am often the only one whoever posts something nice about Cal.
I also like to remind people in threads about Aaron Rodgers, Jason Kidd and Tony Gonzalez where they went to school.
January 17th, 2012 at 7:32 pm
Good idea. Maybe after lent I’ll hit up the boards there.
January 17th, 2012 at 8:18 pm
Anybody else see this post from bearinsider…?
It’s about tedford…
“He is being treated unfairly here. I’m one of the Negas, have been for sometime so do NOT confuse this with S Pumping. I have been on the phone with my sources quite a bit today (they are well connected and have yet to lead me astray) and TOSH is to blame for this, not JT. I’m not sure how much I can say, but I’ll give what I can. Here is the story/timeline as I have heard:
Tosh was offered a job at Wash and he came to JT with the “my heart is here speech”. JT went and fought for Tosh to get the offer matched. JT and Tosh have a meeting where JT tells Tosh how much he wants to keep him, how he is an integral part of what they are doing, etc. He says that he went and got the offer matched and that he wanted him to stay, but that he won’t/can’t get into a bidding war for Tosh and that he (JT) needs his (Tosh’s) word that this is done and that he (Tosh) isn’t going anywhere. Tosh assures JT this is over. Tosh breaks his word, continues talking to UW and gets another offer which he doesn’t present to JT, as he has already been told and committed to no bidding war.
JT didn’t find out Tosh was gone (by voicemail) until he got off the plane for a recruiting trip Tosh was supposed to meet JT on. They were supposed to meet yesterday to recruit and Tosh didn’t show.
Combine that with the fact that Tosh is breaking the unwritten coaches code of only recruiting for one school and he is dead to me and I suspect Cal and JT as well. If you are recruiting and switch schools, you stop recruiting those guys… pass them off to another on staff.
Truly despicable. In my estimation, JT has committed a multitude of sins, but this fiasco isn’t on him. No one looks rosy in this, but this is Tosh’s doing.
Hopefully this gives a picture of what went down without burning my sources. I don’t want to talk about numbers, but if there are any questions, I’ll do my best.”
January 17th, 2012 at 8:24 pm
Thanks Rollon. As I suspected, Tosh is a TURD!
January 17th, 2012 at 8:32 pm
Maybe if practices werent closed more people would be interested in cal.
Who here has been alive when cal made a rose bowl ? Won the conference straight out ?
Not me. And each year theres less and less.
January 17th, 2012 at 8:32 pm
Thanks Rollon
January 17th, 2012 at 8:33 pm
Rollon, I’ll buy Tosh screwing up when it comes to the recruiting switches and so on, but if UW keeps calling him, upping their offer to ridiculous hieghts, after JT and Sandy have hit what they call a max and promise they won’t get in a bidding war, I can’t blame him for that. Should he have gone back to JT and said they offered me 500k, a house, and a boat, and asked them to match?
January 17th, 2012 at 8:45 pm
No Wisdom Cow, he should have been a man and thanked Tedford for the opportunity and moved on. Then he should have had the ethics not to try to recruit the same kids for Steve Sarsleazian
January 17th, 2012 at 8:48 pm
I know if this is what happened. It’s a quote from a blog. Looks convincing to me though. A man of integrity would not have bailed in th fashion. It’s a free market. You can do what you want. But you do unto others like that, and pretty soon you done lost all your friends.
January 17th, 2012 at 8:56 pm
I’d be willing to bet recruiting those kids was part of the deal. This looks like a straight deal with the devil. A house and a boat and an “i need your answer immdiately.”Wtf? Makes perfect sense. Sad if true.
January 17th, 2012 at 9:20 pm
Hold the phone a second. Never put full faith and credit in a blog post as to how things went down, especially when specifics are glossed over to make one side look better than another. Second, until we know exactly what has been said, we do not know that Tosh went after Shaq for UW so much as Shaq decided to reopen for a UW school he already had in his final few schools. Note – we don’t have anything on Tosh trying to get McCarthy to UW, and he opted for his #2 school, as Shaq may be doing.
If Tosh built a relationship with the kids, and they want his input, do you suggest he is supposed to not answer a call.
Again, we don’t know the facts outside of Tosh getting a big offer and taking it, with Sandy and JT giving their blurbs.
Personally, Tosh kinda hurt himself for the next few years of recruiting, as every other school will ask the kids to ask Tosh if he is bolting again. The only real winner is Tosh’s bank account, and he can’t really be blamed for that, IMO.
January 17th, 2012 at 9:23 pm
Wisdom Cow:
“I don’t know what I’m doing to do,” Thompson said. “I know this is a business and everyone has to do what’s best for them, but this one still hurts. I’ve known Tosh forever. He has been recruiting me for the last three years and, even though he won’t be my position coach, he’s a big reason I got interested in Cal in the first place.
“He came in for a home visit last night and told me he was thinking about taking the UW job and wasn’t sure what he was going to do. I had heard the rumors for the last week but thought there was no way he was going to leave. Then he called me this morning and said UW gave him an offer that he couldn’t refuse and he was leaving. He asked if I would be interested in looking at Washington and said he wants to come back and visit me next week.”

If that’s not Tosh recruiting Shaq to UW, I don’t know what is.

So Tosh WAS recruiting for UW while still an employee of Cal. Seems to me that UW should be facing both a lawsuit with huge monetary damages, as well as harsh sanctions from the conference and/or the NCAA.
It’s one thing for a coach to move on to other opportunities, but doing so two weeks before LOI day and tampering with a school’s recruiting class in the process cannot be tolerated.
If anything, Thompson’s account makes it look like it was a premeditated attempt by UW and Sark to enable Tosh to visit Cal recruits one more time before departing, allowing him at the same time to plant a UW seed in the heads of those recruits. Disgusting.

Will, I had read those, too. Again, I have no doubt Shaq told it true, but who is to say the “Then he called me this morning” line was not in return of a call from Shaq he is leaving out? Has someone cross examined him or are you going to presume Shaq, like all 18 yr olds, would tell a tale that still puts him in a totally innocent light?

H8sRed, that would be exactly why I wanted to see the details of Tosh’s last contract. There may be, MAY, be legal issues against UW, as well as recruiting violations. One thing in favor of actual fact finding is the over use of texting these recruits tend to use, and that specific facts can be learned outside of biased tale tellings by either side.

The same source that first reported to me two weeks ago that UW was looking to poach Tosh, and also reported that there was a falling out of some sort last year (pre-Oregon game) indicated that the bearinsider report is hogwash, and that Tedford knew Tosh was leaving the night before it was announced because he (Tedford) contacted recruits telling them it was coming down the pike and that Cal simply couldn’t match the offer.
Who knows what the truth is right now, but I give more stock in a source saying Tosh did disclose what the terms of the UW final offer were and asked Cal to match, but Cal simply couldn’t. Don’t anything yet on Eric.

And by the way, tedford’s written press release (no doubt carefully crafted by the administration) is in line with the source’s news, as opposed to the bearinsider blog story.

What a pathetic, whiny fan base. Football is played mano y mano. Competitors compete and competitors win.
First you guys lamented having bad facilities. Now you got your facilities you lament not being able to pay assistants.
It is always one excuse for losing after another with your program.
I am about ready to leave for good. I come on here to read inspirational news and to engage with a fan base that wants to compete and all I read is a bunch of crybabies.

Yeah, Eric. It’s hard to imagine Tosh didn’t give ample opportunities for Cal to even make close counter offers that would keep him in the Bay Area.

We all know what Sark will say:
“Shaq Thompson misspoke. It never happened. These are not the droids you’re looking for. Move along.”
Straight out of the Pete the Cheat playbook. Pity we placed one vile stench with two minions.

His brother played for you guys for 4 years and that didn’t get Shaq interested in the program but his relationship with Lupoi did. And why is that?
During the 4 years his brother played you guys were the perennial underachievers. How many times were you guys rated only to blow it? How many times on national TV did you guys get humiliated?
Tennessee 2006
2007 – Collapse of the Century
Maryland 2008
Oregon, USC blow outs 2009
Nevada 2010
Win and meet expectations and kids like Shaq won’t exit just because some coach does.
Unbelievable blindness on the part of your posters.

moron the troll sez:
“I am about ready to leave for good. I come on here to read inspirational news and to engage with a fan base that wants to compete and all I read is a bunch of crybabies.”
Yet another in a long line of troll threats to leave this blog. It is really a shame that this so-called person never follows through on and lives up to the endless threats. Just once, it would be great if this sorry loser actually did what it threatened to do. I suspect that if that ever happened,, the troll might actually garner a bit of respect from the people who have a legitimate reason to be here.
BTW, moron- you only come on here to spew garbage about Cal, its football program, players, coaches and fans. Try being honest for once, will you?

Moren still needs his daddy to wipe his fanny for him, and his mommy left him a long time ago, so excuse him for not being on top of things.

Recruits, beware!
Tosh is the new Darth Vader” Once loyal to Cal, now loyal to the dark side. Now he’s out for the hunt, trying to get you to follow him.
Like I always tell my daughter, “Judge a man not by what he says but by what he does. Otherwise, down the line he might screw you.”
