Basketball: Solomon ruled academically ineligible — out for the remainder of the season

Cal sophomore forward Richard Solomon has been ruled academically ineligible and will miss the remainder of the season.
“Academics are a priority,” coach Mike Montgomery said. “We hope that Richard can get his grades right, and rejoin the team, next year.”
Solomon is not with the Bears on their trip to Washington. A huge hit for Cal, greatly diminishing the team’s depth.
The 6-foot-10 native of Los Angeles is the club’s top rebounder at 6.2 per game and averages 6.0 points.
Solomon was suspended by Montgomery two games in early December “for conduct contrary to athletic department and university values,” then missed four more with a stress reaction in his foot. He has played the past four games, coming off the bench as the Bears’ first post substitute.
Cal is tied with Stanford for first place in the Pac-12 at 5-1. The Bears play at Washington Thursday, at Washington State on Saturday.
Meanwhile, junior guard Brandon Smith, who missed the past three games with a concussion, is on the trip and has been cleared to play Thursday.

OK, will the person who found the cursed Tiki in the jungle please return it to its rightful place?
And hurry, before Jorge trips getting off the plan in Seattle and sprains his ankle.

Ok, seriously, enough with the bad news this week. Wow.

I give up. I’m not even going to hope anymore. Someday, and that day may never come, Cal will make me smile again when football or basketball does something surprisingly positive. I’m not going to put anymore energy into thinking about something good that might happen.

Hey Jeff, is there any way you can start covering the rugby team? This is just too depressing.

Rugby news flash: Bears are 4-0 and have outscored opponents 269-6 so far. Feel any better, Discdude?

Too bad. Cal was moving forward to be really strong at the end of this year, and I had predicted two wins in the NCAA’s before this announcement. I still think it is possible to win one. Thurman just needs to step up.
What is really sad was is likely the last time Cal will have an excellent basketball team for a few years unless recruiting really turns around.

Great. Jeff put the whammy on Rugby now.

Solomon just never really seemed that interested. All the “God Given” talent in the world doesn’t make a difference. Hopefully a blip but would not be surprised if he stops playing all together. Obviously wasn’t that important to him.

Usually Monty is better at weeding undisciplined kids out. I guess when you’re desperate for a big man, you can’t be so discriminating. I was so down on him early, just from his body language on the court, but I actually felt like he kind of turned it around after the injury. Sad situation all around.

Bad news for Solomon and the team. Hopefully he’ll find his academic bearings and return next year, but that doesn’t seem likely. Good luck, Richard, hope to see you back.
Glad to have Brandon returning. We’ll definitely need him tomorrow, and will be nice to see if Thurman and Bak can step up. Got seven tickets for tomorrow night for my fellow Cal alum brothers and four of our kids. Go Bears!! Rub the husky noses in the crap they’ve been laying on Cal football.

This is terrible. We needed this guy the next two years to defend the PAC 12 title that we were to win this year! How did this happen with all of the tutorial help that these guys get? I mean, can you imagine M Jordan or D. Rose being ruled ineligible their sophomore or frosh years? It does NOT happen! Disappointing news. Disappointing.

Hey Jeff:
Interesting timing on Solo and academics.
Grades would have come out a while ago, no?
Meanwhile, classes have just started, so it’s not like he failed any classroom stuff for this term. In other words, I don’t get it (timing).
Thanks.
