Basketball: WSU game thread

OK, HERE’S WHERE THINGS STAND: Washington beat Stanford 76-63, so Cal and Oregon are tied for first place at 6-2, and Colorado and Washington are one-half game back at 5-2. Stanford and Arizona both are 4-3. Stanford visits Cal a week from Sunday.

THIS SCORE JUST IN: Colorado defeated Arizona 64-63 in Boulder, so the Buffaloes improve to 5-2, just one-half game back of Cal and Oregon. Arizona is 4-3 in Pac-12 play.

FINAL SCORE: WSU 77, Cal 75. The Bears can only get the road split and drop into a first-place tie with at least Oregon, both at 6-2. Cal has its third four-game win streak of the season snapped and is 16-5 overall, coming home to play three in a row at Haas, where it is 13-0. Next up: Stanford a week from Sunday. Gutierrez had 19 points, six assists and five rebounds and Cobbs had 15 points and five assists. But the two combined to shoot 2 for 10 from the 3-point line and the Bears were just 6 of 20 from beyond the arc. Crabbe had 14 points and nine rebounds, Kamp 12 points, Kravish 11. Aden scored 24 for the Cougars (11-8, 3-4), giving him 57 in two games — and likely Pac-12 Player of the Week honors. Motum had 15/10 and Motum chipped in 14.

0:06 2nd H: Motum fouled Cobbs, who made the first FT, missed the second (presumably on purpose) and Gutierrez got the offensive rebound. But he missed a 3-pointer and D.J. Shelton rebounded for WSU.

0:09 2nd H: Cal ball after turnover by Brock Motum.

0:11 2nd H: WSU leads 77-74 and has the ball after a 3-pointer by Lacy. He was also fouled by Gutierrez, but missed the FT. Lodwick got the offensive rebound, then Brandon Smith stole the ball from him. But Gutierrez missed from 3 and Motum rebounded for WSU.

0:32 2nd H: Bears need to play some defense. Still tied at 74-all but WSU has possession after the timeout.

1:30 2nd H: It’s even at 74-all. Cal ball after the timeout. Gutierrez ended the Bears’ field goal drought with a layup at 3:12 and Crabbe hit a 3-pointer with 2:38 left. But Cougars are responding to every blow.

3:30 2nd H: Cal leads 67-66. The Bears do not have a field goal since 9:37 left in the half when Cobbs made a jump shot. Cal has missed eight straight shots from the field. Aden has 22 points — 55 in past two games.

6:51 2nd H: Cal has gone almost 3 minutes without a field goal and game is tied at 62-62. Pardon my absence: Was posting/writing on new football defensive line coach Todd Howard.

13:47 2nd H: A steal and dunk by Gutierrez and a 3-pointer by Cobbs and Cal leads 56-49. Gutierrez has 17.

15:19 2nd H: Crabbe hit a 3-pointer and Cobbs transformed a steal into a breakaway dunk and Cal is back ahead 51-47.

16:09 2nd H: WSU took 47-44 lead on 3-pointer by Abe Lodwick, but Kamp answered with a dunk for Cal and it’s a one-point game.

17:27 2nd H: WSU has tied it at 44-all after a 3-pointer by freshman DaVonte Lacy.

THIS SCORE JUST IN: Utah routed Arizona State 64-43 in Salt Lake City. I know . . . who cares?

HALFTIME SCORE: Cal 40, WSU 34. Gutierrez has 13 points and Crabbe has eight points and five rebounds for the Bears. Cal shooting 17 for 32, 53.1 percent. Bears have 11 assists, just six turnovers. Hold 12-9 rebounding edge. Aden has 16 points for WSU — halfway to his 33 vs. Stanford two nights ago. Cougs shooting 13 for 26 — 50 percent — but have eight TOs.

3:33 1st H: Cal leads 34-27 after a kayup by Harper Kamp that ended a 6-0 WSU run.

6:48 1st H: A 3-pointer by Crabbe and the lead is 32-21. A 9-0 Cal run.

7:01 1st H: Layup by Robert Thurman and Cal leads 29-21. Cal is on a 6-0 run. Gutierrez has nine points.

10:28 1st H: Allen Crabbe and Jorge Gutierrez hit 3-pointers on Cal’s past two possessions, but WSU is keeping pace and trailed just 23-21. Cal shooting 10 for 16, WSU 7 for 11. Call seven assists and just two turnovers. Aden has 10 points for WSU two days after scoring 33 vs. Stanford.

THIS SCORE JUST IN: Oregon rallied from a 37-24 halftime hole to beat UCLA 75-68 in Eugene. Ducks improve to 6-2 in the Pac-12, just one-half game behind the Bears.

14:12 1st H: Cal leads 11-9 at the first timeout. David Kravish has five points already. Cal led 7-2 lead, but the teams have pretty much traded baskets since.

WELCOME: Once again, due to the travel issues related to the Pacific Northwest snow and ice storms, I am not in beautiful Pullman, Wash., today to report on the Bears and Cougars. Will do the best I can from here to provide updates.

Damn. Sounds like fatigue got the better of the guys from 6:51. Gotta love that they kept fighting and could’ve won in final 30 seconds.

After Solomon fiasco, nothing is going to come easy this season.
