Football: NFL’s Bucs pursuing Ducks’ Kelly

By Jeff Faraudo
Sunday, January 22nd, 2012 at 6:54 pm in Football, Pac-12 news.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are involved in talks with Oregon’s Chip Kelly to become the NFL team’s next head coach.

The Oregonian is reporting the deal is close to becoming reality. The Register-Guard in Eugene quotes a source saying, “My sense is he’s gone.”

 UPDATE:

If Kelly leaves, Oregonian columnist John Canzano said a source “deeply connected with the Ducks athletic department” tells him potential replacement candidates could include Tony Dungy, Boise State’s Chris Petersen and . . .  yes, Jeff Tedford.

    Thank you yes !!!

  • covinared

    sanctions next.

  • Juancho

Reports are deal will be done by Monday night.

Reports are Kelly just doesn’t feel like the hassle of working in the college environment is right for him. I..e, he needs to feel free to be sleazier.

The bad news – Chris Peterson is who Oregon is going after to replace him.

The good news – Oregon was the biggest threat for Arik & Shaq – due to the fact they start a new quarter before everyone else. But now with this the stability of Cal may be a good thing.

So much changes so fast in recruiting. But even though its stressful it’s kind of fun to follow.

Treggs was at UCLA the past two nights. Says he’s still solid with Cal. But now he got an offer from USC, which hadn’t offered before. He’ll go on an official there Thursday.

He’ll be up at Cal this weekend though. Let’s hope Kline and co. seal the deal and remind everyone how good this class can be. And how beautiful Cal and the bay area is.

Treggs has an in home visit with our new receivers coach tonight. Let’s hope it’s positive.

Jordan Payton may be stuck in Seattle tonight due to flight delays (weather). Hopefully this helps us.

If Peterson goes to Oregon, we will lose a bunch of guys to them. He
Loves Boise and he’s a uc guy, but they will throw 5mm in swoosh money at him. Hope not, but sadly, Oregon may end up better than they were before. Peterson is the best coach in the country.

  • discdude

Reports are that he’s “escaping” before sanctions! Remind you of anyone else? Moron should be familiar with this strategy. Talk about leaving just before it’s all going to hell.

Peterson seems remote to me, he has spurned offers from much bigger programs. But it’s a possibility. Too bad Wilcox took the job at UW, he might have had a chance at HC. In an ideal world, Oregon offers him $2.5M and he leaves UW in a mess.

  • Easy Ed

Just like Sneaky Pete @ U$C out the door one step ahead of the sanctions.

  • Jan K Oski

Disc – that would be an awesome turn of events, if Wilcox does leave udub.

  • go8ears

Read the *UPDATE* that Jeff posted to this; Apparently Oregon is considering our Jeff Tedford as a possible replacement candidate. What do y’all think of that??

  • The Wisdom Cow

I’ll give my thoughts on Feb 2, GoBears.

  • Kent

Why would Peterson want to coach at Oregon…he has a better gig and Boise…he is a King in Idaho…he’s one of the few coaches who can commit a bunch of violations with the NCAA and still get a pay raise at Boise!

Plus, he now can compete at the BCS level by joining the Big EAst….he has the best chance of winning a national championship at Boise St in the Big East vs. going to Oregon, where if he loses 2 games he will be seen as a failure. I’d be shocked if Peterson leaves Boise.

Oregon might be foreced to hire one of the coordinators for this one.

  • eric

@Go8ears – doubt that it will happen, because Oregon is flush with cash and Tedford ain’t worth half of what he currently gets, so Oregon would rather pay top dollar for top talent. Plus Oregon’s success has been premised by going with dynamic, younger coaches who have guts and creativity, and that isn’t Tedford. Oregon will make a run at Peterson, or maybe Dungy just to keep existing recruits/potential targets interested. Maybe Dungy and bring Peyton Manning in as QB/OC?

  • The Wisdom Cow

Kyle Williams should be available . . .

  • wehofx

    Wow!

  • MoreNCsarecoming

If all of this is true I think your alumni should offer JT a 1m bonus to stay. Tedford is too good to not be your coach. Rah rah tedford.

  • Gobears49

Oregon runs the most interesting offense in college, but it needs really quick backs, including the QB, to work correctly. But I marveled at Nevada’s offense when it was tearing up the Bears last year. It will be interesting to see how their QB develops with the 49ers. However, I believe Luck stayed in school for a year based upon Harbaugh’s instructions, telling him it will take that long to arrange for him to play for the 49ers when he is in the draft next year. Maybe the 49ers will give up Gore and a few other guys to get him.

Closer to the topic at hand, Cal’s best recruiting slogan should be — come to Cal and you will have the best chance to turn pro, based upon all of the guys we have in the pro’s.

  • Bears

Would be very interested to see if Kelly’s offense can work in the nfl.
    We’ll see what happens.

  • SteveNTEXAS

He is staying at Oregon– next rumor please lol

  • Rollonubears

He may be staying this year, but a lot of recruits will reconsider as they have no idea who will be there the following year, nor whether Kelly’s mind will be on something else this year. It’s bad for the program. And it sounds like they were indeed in talks so it’s not really a baseless rumor.

  • MoreNCsarecoming

Unfortunately UCB fans the only one decommitting is not Kelly but one of your prized recruits who is going to go to UW because a couple of your coaches jumped ship and possibly a few more recruits including Armstead who will end up at USC.

You guys are overlooking what matters the most. Your QB Wayward is still around and what WR recruit who desires to play early wants to be on the receiving end of that guy’s passes.

  • Gobears49

    Juancho,

    Any updates on Kelly?

  • Yoda

Amy, you still taking the bar exam these days?

  • The Wisdom Cow

Kelly stays, says his “heart” is in Oregon. Well, Phil might have it in a jar somewhere, but I’m betting it is more an issue of a 3.5 million dollar buy out.

I really wonder what recruits think after all those “insiders” spoke of how much Kelly does not enjoy the “other” aspects of college football – as in parents and teaching and young men.

  • Gobears49

    MoreNCsarecoming,

Any prospective Cal wide receiver will undoubtedly be much smarter than you, will read Zach Kline’s press clippings and be impressed by the fact that so many people are so high on him (some say he’s the next Elway or Luck), will look at the other Cal QB’s (two other Elite 11 QB’s), and will see that they will get to catch passes from the best college QB group for three years (Kline) and two years, I believe (Bridgford and Hinder). That is more than enough time for the wide receivers to show their wares, particularly because they can’t expect to be a “go to” guy their freshmen year, especially with Keenan Allen around.

  • Gobears49

Forgot to mention Boehm, who while not an Elite 11 QB, is really good. Big, strong, accurate arm, quick release, and can run really well. He is a redshirt freshman next year. Could stand out because of his running ability, which has become much more important in college football in recent years. I think he needs to improve his “escapability” skills, but that is probably true for all Cal QB’s, including Maynard, though he’s probably the best at it right now.

  • Will

“Any prospective Cal wide receiver will undoubtedly be much smarter than you,”

Understatement of the year. The dirt on the bottom of my shoe is smarter than Moren! LOL
