Football: Armstead to announce on Sunday

By Jeff Faraudo
Friday, January 27th, 2012 at 4:56 pm in Basketball, Football, Recruiting.

Some of you may already have heard: Elk Grove’s Arik Armstead plans to announce his college decision on Sunday at 3 p.m. at his family’s church. Here’s a more detailed report from the Sacramento Bee.

The 6-8, 295-pound offensive tackle/defensive end (and basketball power forward) has had home visits this week from Cal, Washington, Oregon, USC, UCLA, Notre Dame and Auburn. Surprised the 49ers haven’t stopped by.

The significance of Armstead making his announcement on Sunday could be the influence it has on other recruits, particularly safety Shaq Thompson of Grant HS in Sacramento. The two have apparently become close in recent weeks and some believe they may wind up at the same place.

UPDATE: Joe Davidson of the Bee — busiest man in Sacto — reports that Shaq Thompson is down to Cal, UW and Oregon. Said the UCLA trip is off.

A little informed guesswork by Davidson on his twitter account: “Getting asked right and left,so if I had to guess-speculate…Shaq-Armstead go to Cal and WoW the Old Blues.”

    Is he catholic?

  • Juancho

F it. Im back. Im episcopalean and we grade on a curve if it can be of use here.

I got a kick out of Gus, Arik’s Dad, being impressed by Oregon and UCLA for not recruiting negative. Isn’t that simply the only way to go when you are on the outside looking it? Cal, UW, and U$C were on top. Not being negative is just about the only way to distinguish yourself in an effort to wiggle into the top. Had they been there, would they have stayed non-negative?

I’d love to know the nature of the negative recruiting though. Pretty good idea where Tedford went. UW and U$C, though? I’d love to know what they said.

  • Rollonubears

Bear insider board guy thinks sark and Lupoi are both lds. That’s interesting. Pretty sure aa isn’t lds.

I find it hard to believe tedford was negative recruiting.

  • http://www.thewisdomcow.blogspot.com/ The Wisdom Cow

    Rollon,

Tedford had to have voiced his displeasure with Tosh and the way it was handled, which undoubtedly ripped UW and Sark a bit, even if only through mutual conversation. That would qualify as negative recruiting.

  • daredevilfan

This has to end soon as I may get fired for checking the site too much. But its as funny as it is painful. Wisdom Cow is out….then he’s in. Same for Juancho. I guess that’s the way it works when we’re truly blue and gold inside and out. Now we’re researching religious affiliation. College sports are the best! Beat ‘furd! Really a tree for a mascot? Plz.

  • Uh Huh!

    Aw, to heck with it!
I’m going to hitchhike to Elk Grove tomorrow and sleep on the steps of the church to make sure I get in the door first thing on Sunday morning, so I can see it live.
Then, after he says “Cal”, I’m going to blast the Cal fight song on my boombox and jump around like a wild, crazy man!

  • http://www.thewisdomcow.blogspot.com/ The Wisdom Cow

Here’s the Sac link. See you there, Uh Huh. I’ll be the one in a home made Oski costume.

    http://blogs.sacbee.com/preps/archives/2012/01/arik-armstead-t.html

  • Uh Huh!

But why do I seriously think he’s going to say “Notre Dame”?
    Hmmm….
    1) Chance to play with brother
    2) Announcing at his church. ND is a catholic school.
    3) Church crowd in NorCal is probably the only place where he can get cheer and acceptance when not saying Cal.
    4) Keeps tweeting “ish”
    5) Arik quote: “major reason I was thinking about Cal was coach Tosh.”
    6) “He was a big reason why I’d go to Cal,” Armstead said.
    7) Joe Davidson quote of one parent of a Cal commit: “Losing Tosh changes it for our son & may cost Tedford his job long term.” – Complete speculation, but I somewhat attribute this quote to Guss.

Hmmm… At least all this will be over, one way or another.

  • http://www.thewisdomcow.blogspot.com/ The Wisdom Cow

Some things to note, as if they really matter, the first coach to reach out to him was Monty. The first football coach was Howard. He’s joined at the hip with Shaq. His mom and Shaq’s mom are constantly talking.

Recruiters spew words. Words are wind. What they KNOW is what Shaq and his family experienced through Syd.

It’s going to hurt if they don’t come to Cal. It just makes too much sense.

I know I’ve been arguing big time for Arik on the basketball team, but now I am having visions of Arik next to Tiny, with Shaq lining up to blitz staggered between them. Whoa. That would be cool.

  • Rollonubears

Church thing and notre dame make sense although he left Jesuit high school after one year for some reason so I’m not sure the religious thing is all that important. Seems very strange to have a reporter tweeting from church tho, regardless.

  • http://btopenworld.com K Scott

Going to Cal would be the honorable thing. Eschew the untrue Tosh, go with the great University of California, which was first in his heart.

  • Rollonubears

In the event of a recruiting letdown, I really hope our round ball bears can provide some pacification. If I have to go to bed with two losses on my mind, Monday’s gonna be rough.

  • Uh Huh!

Actually K Scott, wasn’t USC first in his heart?
I agree with you, however, that it would be horrible if the Tosh departure blew up in our faces. We don’t want to see the run for money win out and ruin everything.

    Good points, Wisdom.

  • Juancho

If we dont get a great recruiting class might as well pack it in and stop making payments and let them foreclose on the new facilities.

  • Juancho

Fidel castro is also a jesuit. Might that mean something ? Cal is left leaning.

  • Juancho

Jeff when we show up liquored up to the church sunday we’ll be sure to promote your blog. “this is a bay area news group sponsored trip “

  • daredevilfan

hang in there gang. we’ve had some great defensive classes lately, and we’ll have zack and some solid receivers at worst this year, so anything above that is gravy. Facilities will sell each year now so as long as we keep progressing each year….

  • daredevilfan

JF, where did you get the 3pm time? I don’t see that in the article. It sounds like it might be in the morning?

  • Jeff Faraudo

Daredevilfan — Greg Biggins of ESPN reported the 3 p.m. time. I will try to confirm directly with Armsteads.

  • Juancho

We’ll be tailgating Jeff. We’ll see you there.

  • MoreNCsarecoming

Wow…this is pathetic! Hanging onto tweets from 18 year olders as if it is insider trading.

Has your fan base fallen this low?

  • Will

MoreNCS_are_ignored and sanctioned! troll post blocked

Did anyone check out the LA Times front page the other day? It was a story about a new raunchy web series featuring $C students, and it highlights the USC student body’s pristine reputation LOL!

  • http://www.thewisdomcow.blogspot.com/ The Wisdom Cow

Joe Davidson of the Sac Bee is 18? Impressive reporting.

  • MoreNCsarecoming

Even the great Moraga Bear on Bears Insider says…

Insane. And people chasing their tails with every cryptic tweet out there makes it that much crazier.

Davidson should be glad he isn’t Bonnie Anderson. No telling what wierdo freaks stalked the poor woman.

  • http://www.thewisdomcow.blogspot.com/ The Wisdom Cow

Yes, it was amazing that someone chose her at random to create a MoreNCSarecoming account, being a librarian at UC Davis and all. And terribly coincidental that that account was deleted weeks before “she” posted that she was not you, which put things to an end, just in case. Such coincidences.

If only one of the Cal alums in Anonymous would do us a favor . . .

  • MoreNCsarecoming

Still can’t own up to an epic fail Wisdom Cow?

BTW the one great thing about all of this recruiting hype is the lack of rugby hype.

Talk about a nothing to get excited about. Club sports don’t do it for most fans.

  • http://www.thewisdomcow.blogspot.com/ The Wisdom Cow

Let’s meet, then, and you can prove me wrong, not being Bonnie Hain-Anderson. Coward?

  • MoreNCsarecoming

And what would that prove WC? i have already given enough opportunity for people to meet me. Three years ago at the SC game I told people to come and stand by the SC bus while I spoke with one of the coaches.

I am not that person and have no clue who it is until which time you attempted to act like the amateur sleuth not called Wisdom Cow. Totally hilarious. What a whack job you are pal.

  • http://www.thewisdomcow.blogspot.com/ The Wisdom Cow

Whack job? Coming from a compulsive troll, how nice.

    Let’s see, then.

SI.com account for “moreNCSarecoming” has an oddity in the profile page in that it lists the name of the individual making the account. Most sites do not.

The listed name being one Bonnie Anderson.

Shortly after I point out this possible ID, noting and linking said profile, the account was deleted.

Weeks later, Bonnie Anderson, employee of the UC Davis, writes a post claiming not to be said troll. Was that post true? Possibly, so the matter was ceased.

Yet, it sure was odd that the alleged UC Davis employee which announced someone had contacted UC Davis regarding an employee possibly spending all her work time posting comments against a fellow UC (not me, though clearly the result of my possibly “outing” the troll as said individual), did not occur for weeks after the account was closed. It’s fairly clear “she” was not aware of the IDing for weeks, but then, who closed the account? And why close it? Especially after having so carefully posted counterfeit MoreNCSarecoming statements on the web site, allegedly for the exact purpose of being misidentified?

Now, you claimed others made that alleged account. Again, possible. Why that individual chose “Bonnie Anderson” as a name for the account remains unknown. That the account maker was fortunate enough to have noticed posts referring to the SI.com account on completely different Cal sites, so quickly, and then deleting the account, was possible as well. This would suggest the account was created by one of a relatively small set of readers of those Cal blog entries during a short time span. Interesting, isn’t it?

Amateur sleuth? Absolutely. Wrong? Not necessarily.

Anyways, you could, of course, meet with me and provide ID which would end the doubts all together. That is what it would prove.

Feel free to have the last word with another illogical quip and unsubstantiated denial, not-pal.

  • MoreNCsarecoming

Hey Clouseau – the names weren’t even the same!!!!!

    Enough said.

  • Will

Can’t see what Moren is saying thanks to Greasemonkey, but I’m going to guess that he’s refusing to meet up with Wisdom Cow.

How about it Moren? The offer is on the table – meet up with Wisdom Cow over some coffee. Get out of the house for once.

  • MoreNCsarecoming

You have done it again WC. Go over to the BI board and look at what you caused. Once again you have made this poor woman the object of privacy invasion. I don’t know how many times you need to be told that that woman is not me. She even got onto the SF Gate and told you.

I would recommend you head over to BI and tell them to take off the privacy information because you guys do have a bunch of whacked out posters who will call up that poor woman and harass her. I really feel sorry for her. Your obsession with me is hilarious as are the almost 5 page post on me on BI.

I am the only subject that can take your minds off of recruiting. LOL.

Thanks to all of you for the compliment.

I got more interest than Armstead or Shaq. Maybe I should twitter both of them I tell them I upstaged them both. HAHAHAHA

  • http://www.thewisdomcow.blogspot.com/ The Wisdom Cow

Who brought this up? (See #26 @ 4:27 pm)

  • MoreNCsarecoming

There are over 100 Bonnie Andersons in the US.

The name Bonnie Anderson is not the same name as what you as an amateur sleuth produced. It is still laughable to me how you did that.

That woman did everything she could to tell you that you were wrong and I have told you on many occasions that that woman is not me. I wouldn’t know who she is if I was standing in line next to her.

Now you have opened up the can of worms again. If I were you Clouseau, I would go onto to BI and tell the poster to eliminate that info. How would you like your personal information spewed all over the internet?

Oh that’s right. You wouldn’t care. So let’s see it Clouseau.

  • BlueNGold

Only a troll for life would spend so much time on such complete crap.
