Basketball: Pac-12 weekly honor to Cobbs

Cal sophomore point guard Justin Cobbs, who had 38 points and 21 assists in two games to help keep the Bears tied for first place, was named Pac-12 Player of the Week.

In the 15th week of giving the award, the Pac-12 finally found a Cal player worthy of the honor.

“I don’t think there could be much of a question based on the numbers,” Cal coach Mike Montgomery said.

“It’s a blessing,” Cobbs said of getting the award. “I played pretty well this weekend. I’m a lot more confident. I’m kind of picking spots when to be aggressive, when not to be aggressive. Like against Oregon State, we had guys going and those are times when I don’t need to score the ball and I can just look for my teammates.”

Cobbs, a transfer from Minnesota, had a career-high 28 points along with eight assists, four steals and zero turnovers in 38 minutes as the Bears beat Oregon 86-83. Then he had 10 points and a career-best 13 assists, playing 40 minutes in a 77-63 win over Oregon State.

No Cal player has had more assists in a game since 1993-94, when Jason Kidd had four games ofg 13 assists or more, including a school-record 18 vs. Stanford.

“Jason Kidd, yeah . . . to be up there with him is an honor,” Cobb said. “I’m surrounded by great guys. Harper (Kamp) is capable, Jorge (Gutierrez) is capable and Allen (Crabbe) is definitely capable. When you’re surrounded by guys who are always putting up high numbers, it makes the game easier for you.”

Cobb is second in the Pac-12 in assists (5.0 per game) and 11th in scoring (13.2 ppg).

    Congratulations, Justin Cobbs!

What a pleasure to watch young players develop through the course of a season – and year to year – under Monty’s expert guidance.

Gonna miss HK and JG but w emergence of Cobbs and Kravish, we’ll be in good shape next year esp if Solomon gets his head straight and Crabbe keeps improving his drives to the basket.

Cobbs really was the man this past weekend, especially vs Oregon. Congrats to him. Hope that’s the new norm.

I’m a little concerned that Jorge hasn’t won a weekly honor yet. Has a POY ever been crowned withOUT winning a POW?

If Cal wins the conference and Cobbs continues his hot streak, do not be surprised if he surpasses Harper as the second member of the CAL 2011 – 2012 team to make the 1st Team All PAC 12, with Jorge being the other. What is eye catching to me was the last sentence of the article, “11th in scoring and 2nd in assists.” Should Cobbs end up in the Top 10 in scoring and Cal wins the conference, Cobbs should be considered a 1st Team member. Thoughts?

He REALLY deserved it. It still his first year playing at Cal, and he’s better every week.

@Mitchie – part of the reason is Cobbs, who has relieved JG of point guard duties. JG’s scoring is slightly down, as well as his assists, but I believe his plus/minus minutes is way, way positive. That isn’t reflected in a box score, and POW is a lot about the stats.

Cobbs has been spectacular since that Az loss. We will be a force with our PG playing the way he is down the stretch. Way to go Justin!
Well deserved honor. Keep getting better Bears.
