Basketball: Stanford game thread

FINAL SCORE: Stanford 75, Cal 70. The Bears (23-8, 13-5) drop their second straight road game and are denied a piece of the Pac-12 title. Cal finishes in a tie for second place and will get the No. 2 seed for this week’s Pac-12 tournament in Los Angeles. The Bears will play Thursday at 6:10 p.m. at Staples Center — against the winner of Thursday’s game between No. 7 Stanford and No. 10 Arizona State.

Allen Crabbe scored 20 points and Harper Kamp had 19 before fouling out.

Here’s my game story and the full Pac-12 tournament bracket.

C’mon jg, let the game come to u. U got robbed on first 1 1/2 pf’s but u should b used to horrible PAC 12 officiating. Show Sr leadership.
I agree PAC 12 officiating sucks but I don’t think we lost a game this year because of officials. The incompetence evens out in the end.
Big 2 nd half. Beat furd!

  • Matt

this game was probably the worst officiated game ive ever seen by any pac 12 official, and thats saying something…

  • wehofx

That was tough to watch. But hold your heads high, Bears!

RE: bad officiating coming out in the wash, eg, Owens fouling out for furd – that was no foul. That said, the officiating was terrible.

I sure hope JG stops pressing and gets his game back on. Go Bears! Win the tourny.

  • http://thewisdomcow.blogspot.com/ The Wisdom Cow

Rushed everything on offense. Absolutely embarrassing. Lose the first Pac tourney game, and we’re in the NIT. Way too much overconfidence the past few weeks, players and fans.

The refs sure tried to help Stanfurd not choke, but we had no business being in a close game to begin with. Just horrid with the ball. They seriously only slowed things down 3-4 times the whole game. I’m so disappointed.

  • SteveNTEXAS

Wisdom is right – we lost to a team not in the top 100 RPI. Now Eric and Yoda and take off the shirt will make excuses for us.

Joey is late -he needs to come blame the refs.

  • MoreNCsarecoming

    HAHAHAHA…I called it.

    Stanford upsets you guys.

UW beats you guys out of first place

And UCB fans blame Tosh Lupoi for suing some of his 550K salary to pay off the refs. You know how he was taught to cheat when he was your DL coach.

  • ConcordBear

Cal fans made their presence felt today and had a huge showing at our rivals home floor. Really proud to be a Bear and part of that game today.
    Unfortunately it was not enough.
Jorge is really pressing and it’s a major problem.
Thursday is a must win game. JG needs to snap out of it and go back to playing tenacious D and team basketball. He does not have to score to lead the team, he needs to remind himself of what makes him great and go do it.
Two games in a row the opponent wanted it more, giving up offensive rebounds and losing defensive battle really hurt.
Cut down the turnovers too Bears, get back in your offensive rhythm.
If Jorge hangs his head Th I’m going to be extremely disappointed.
Can’t make excuses or look for bail outs. Great players and teams win because they rise above the bs.
Still opportunity for this team to do something special.
    Crunch time, let’s Go Bears!

  • SteveNTEXAS

If we are bad .. what does that make USC? I guess with anonymous posting any slut can be a virgin.

  • Dan

I like these guys and they are class kids.

With that said, this team wilted in every big opportunity game this season. I don’t think it’s fair to call them losers, and technically they are winners as they have a winning record- BUT – this team had EVERY chance to win games that would truly establish themselves as a top 25 team and had EVERY chance to nail down a conference championship – and FAILED each and every time. Mizzou, SDSU, UNLV, and too mnay to list in conference play, but we can at least throw the last 2 games in there. Think about it.

And this with 2 senior leaders in Harper and Jorge. For me, this season is a bit of a disappointment, we were favored to win the championship by many “experts”, and we came close, but didn’t get it done. And this is in a very mediocre Pac 12 this season. Chances like this don’t come along often, times will be tougher in coming seasons- this was a golden opportunity squandered over and over and over again.

They showed some mettle to get back into the game today – after playing like garbage for most of it- and showed very little poise on offense- rushing, forcing shots- they looked panicked instead of relaxing and running their offense- and this in their 31st game of the season? That’s terrible.

Missed free throws in crunch time, failing to box guys out, especially on free throws, etc. Stanford wanted it more and played better and deserved to win. Same thing vs. Colorado. I want to believe these guys have heart, but a team with real heart, toughness and leadership would have found a way to win one of these last 2 games. I’m not saying they have none, just not enough to be a championship team- hello Captain Obvious, I know. I expected more out of a Montgomery coached team and with seniors like Jorge and Harper. Yes, our bench is non-existent, and that is a huge issue- but still, the opportunities were there many times, we never grabbed one of them.

I don’t expect much in the NCAA tournament, and if they don’t win a game in the P12 tournament, they may find themselves on the bubble, or worse, in the NIT. Sounds crazy, but it could happen. If that does happen, there won’t be much to be upset about. They didn’t deliver when it was time.

Sorry to seem harsh, but I think this is the truth.

Finally, is the Moron actually here gloating about our basketball team coming in second? As bad as the loser Trojans were again this year … priceless. And classless. As usual.

  • Will

Steve, I guarantee you that Moren knows ALL about being a virgin.

  • Eric

SteveNTexas – why are you going after me? You’ve been very good at criticizing Monty for recruiting, and I’ve defended that.

Are you going to start suggesting that I will make excuses for Tedford? That would constitute slander in some states.

  • ConcordBear

Every time sc troll posts about Cal it strengthens the UC brand. When you have sad little people from other schools anonymously trying to slander your product you know you are doing something right.
Bring it troll, keep feeding us.
    Go Bears!

  • H8sRed

Dan – I have to disagree about wilting, especially with yesterday’s game. After a tough first half, punctuated by ridiculously bad calls against Jorge, Cal fought back and brought it to 72-70 with a couple minutes to play. Then Jorge got hip-checked across the floor — no call. Two seconds later Harper gets called for a non-existent foul and fouls out. Cal would have had the ball down by two (with Harper still in the game). Instead, Stanford gets free throws and a lucky bounce off the miss.

I’ve posted this before, but the Pac-12 needs to invest some of the windfall from the TV contracts in proper training for officials — both football and basketball. The way they call games it seems like they have marching orders from the league to favor one team over the other. It’s a disgrace.

I would have loved to move Jorge into the 2nd best Cal guard of my era (1990-present) but after his dismal performances the last 2 games Randle continues to follow Kidd. Que paso Jorge? Que paso? You still have a chance for redemption but its gonna take a sweet sixteen, something Randle couldn’t quit achieve. Go Bears!

I suppose when you have no life and your only social outlet you have is trolling on the blog of a college sports program you profess to despise, posts like the above are to be expected. But they certainly speak volumes about the intellectual and mental maturity of the poster. I guess being anonymous provides enough cover that the troll does not mind revealing its own shortcomings and cognitive defects by continuing to post such predictable and brain dead rubbish here.

  • joey

It’s simple. If Greenstein is a ref at the game i don’t watch anymore. This is similar to Steve because he never goes or watches the games, he just talks rpi and recruiting.

  • Takeoffthatredshirt

    Hey Steve-

Head over to BearInsider and try your ‘fire Monty/hire Jason Kidd’ logic. You’ll get laughed off the board.

    Oh wait that already happened.

You’re right though, it’s not a popularity contest. But I should warn you it’s not a contest to say the stupidest thing anyone has ever heard.
