Basketball: Jerry Palm has Cal in as No. 12 seed; ESPN’s Lunardi projects Bears at No. 10

Jerry Palm of CBS Sportsline is projecting Cal as a No. 12 seed, playing No. 5 Florida State in a first-round game at Portland. If this were to happen, actually not a bad draw. A short trip and a bracket that avoids a potential second-round game against a No. 1.

Palm’s scenario has the Bears facing a possible second-round game vs. No. 4 Murray State or No. 13  Long Beach State.

One concern: Palm envisions Cal as the Pac-12 tournament winner, and includes no at-large entry — no Washington — in his field. What does that mean if the Bears don’t win Friday and Saturday?

Meanwhile . . .

Joe Lunardi’s latest ESPN “bracketology” report has the Bears seeded No. 10 and facing No. 7 New Mexico in Greensboro, N.C. That scenario would set up a potential second-round game vs. Duke — a rematch of Cal’s second-round game in 2010.

Lunardi still has two Pac-12 teams in the field, projecting regular-season champ Washington into a No. 12 play-in game. That would change, of course, if someone other than Cal wins the Pac-12 tournament.

  • I would love a 12, 11, or 10 seed. We are due a site in the West too, too many years the Bears have to travel 10,000 miles to play a team that only had to travel 20 miles. Sick and tired of that bs. Great 2nd half last night, it was SO good to see Jorge do his thing otra vez. Go Bears!

I just realized the Cal vs. Stanford game was yesterday. I was one day off.

Palm has been spending too much time with his own palm to make cogent picks.

If the Bears do not win the Pac tourney they should be a 10 or 11 seed. If they win it I can see them being a 7 or possibly a 6 and getting a favorable draw. They would have 26 wins in that scenario and go in hot.
Whatever the ncaa outcome it sure helps your cause to just keep winning.
Hope the Bears can do that tonight!
Anything being done to spread the word to Cal fans down south the get to the game?
8:30pm start time on a Friday night should allow a lot of busy working people to be there.

As long as we are in and not an 8 or 9, I’m cool.

  • Ditto that Eric.

  • Facing Duke in North Carolina, now that sounds like the type of thing the committee would do to us. Same old, same old.

  • Sean

Cal only school in Pac-12 with a team still playing in Men’s and Women’s tourney!

  • SteveNTEXAS

Sean -speaking of the women -they are on TV now leading WSU by 1.

As for the men I won’t worry about seeding. I’m happy for the rest and preparation time for whoever we play.
