The difference with the two guys we have so far, they both grew up Cal fans. Goff is the son of two Cal Bears. Martin is a lifelong Cal fan.

But you’re right, doesn’t make anything official.

But it’s better than seeing these guys at this point make the same declarations for a competitor school. Recruiting has changed in that now the great classes are built by the recruits themselves who make a verbal early, then recruit their friends as they go to the various all star camps and competitions. That’s what Kline and Treggs did last year. If not for those two early commits our class would have really been a disaster last year.

We need early verbals if for no other reason to have Cal soft verbals at the all star events.

Long story short, top guys give verbals early. So might as well have them say Cal instead of Oregon. Maybe they don’t all stick. But having none of these guys say Cal would surely be worse.
