I was very sad to see Haase transfer. He was a glue guy and I agree he is a Jorge-like player, meaning he worked hard to be a solid all around player and generally annoying to opposing teams.

Would've been nice to have him vs Wisconsin GB. Yes, I still think about that loss.

Haase was an outstanding college player. Very similar to Jorge in my opinion, just a litter less length but a better shooter.
Players like him are types you need to be great.

I distinctly remember a photo of Williams speaking to Haase at the end of the Cal-KU game. Isn't it an amazing coincidence that Haase transferred to KU soon after that?

Haase was not a particularly good shooter. He was best known for diving for loose balls (whether necessary or not).

Thanks Jeff. Starting to come back to me. Those were the days when Cal had absolutely great basketball talent, brought in primarily by what Bozeman did best -- recruit. I have written in these blogs recently that Cal should have a similar Bozeman/Lupoi type guy focused on basketball recruiting.

While the Kidd/Murray/Buckley/Haase (and Cal also other good players in the Duke win year) years were probably the peak in terms of basketball talent at Cal, most people don't remember that Cal had similar talent in the late 60's with Charley Johnson, Phil Chenier, Jackie Ridgle, and Ansley Truitt playing for at least one year together. The team was average because Cal's coach then wasn't very good. But supposedly, John Wooden commented he would trade his team (which I think won the NCAA championship around that time) for Cal's.

Haase went on to become a three-year starter and hugely popular player at KU. He had started 23 games alongside fellow freshman Jason Kidd at Cal in 1992-93, averaging 7.2 points. My most vivid memory of Haase that season involve the tragedy of his father unexpectedly dying on the night the Bears played at USC. Cal lost that game 67-65 after Haase fouled a USC player who made the winning free throws. Already feeling terrible, he was greeted early the next morning with the news about his father. Given the choice to return home to be with his family or play Sunday at UCLA, Haase opted to play. He had 16 points and five assists and Cal routed the Bruins 104-82 -- the worst loss UCLA had suffered at Pauley Pavilion to that point. After the drama of Todd Bozeman replacing Lou Campanelli, Haase had 13 points in the NCAA tournament upset of Duke, then 10 in the Sweet 16 loss to Kansas. Uncomfortable with the new landscape at Cal and needing a change after his father's death, Haase transferred to KU.
