Basketball: Gutierrez plays in all-star game

Cal’s Jorge Gutierrez scored eight points, but his West squad lost 103-99 to the East in the NABC Reese’s College All-Star game at the Final Four in New Orleans.

The Pac-12 Player of the Year also had three rebounds, one assist and one steal in 15 minutes.

New Mexico State’s Wendell McKines (Richmond HS) had 15 points and 18 rebounds for the West squad. Marquette’s Jae Crowder scored 25 for the East.

Meanwhile . . .

   – CBI championship: Pitt 71, Washington 65. With both teams playing sans their best player, the Panthers (22-17) beat the Cougars (19-18) in the decisive game of the best-of-three CBI championship series at Pittsburgh.

The Panthers played for the second straight game without top scorer Ashton Gibbs while WSU was without top scorer Brock Motum for the third straight game. Both are nursing ankle injuries.

Reggie Moore had 18 points and five assists for the Cougars.
