Expected for days, placekicker Giorgia Tavecchio officials signed a contract with the 49ers on Friday, the seventh ex-Cal player to join an NFL squad this week as a free agent. Six other Cal players were drafted last weekend.
Tavecchio made 20 of 23 field goals as a senior last fall and finished his Cal career with 256 points — fifth on the school’s all-time scoring list.
Tavecchio will find it difficult to dislodge veteran kicker David Akers, who made 44 of 52 field goals and scored 166 points a year ago. But the chance to perform at training camp could lead to opportunities with other teams.
