Sure. Because national magazines that have been published for decades and have hundreds of thousands of subscribers always print stories they know will be explosive without checking sources.

Here’s a pop quiz. If you’re a basically-good person who knows he has a long career of professional basketball ahead of him, and you’ve been defamed by a national sports publication, would you:

A. Call the writer and editor and demand a retraction and apology

B. Hold a nationally televised press conference to clear your name and demand a retraction and apology

C. Do neither A nor B, but sue for $10 million

For a guy who had way more than his share of “character issues” and who swears that those days are all behind him, and that he’s just trying to be a better person, Nelson sure did react to this the way a short-sighted, take-no-responsibility, petty child would have.

Although, to be fair, maybe he already figured out that he has absolutely no career prospects in professional basketball, and this is his last resort. If that’s the case, then I give him at least a little credit for some self-awareness.
