Football: Cecil Whiteside dismissed from team

By Jeff Faraudo
Thursday, May 24th, 2012 at 9:45 am in Football.

Cal sophomore outside linebacker Cecil Whiteside was dismissed from the football team for unspecified violation of team rules, coach Jeff Tedford announced.

Whiteside, from Huntington Beach, is listed as a backup on Cal’s post-spring practice depth chart. He started three games last season, totaling 17 tackles, including three sacks.

    Who?

  • ConcordBear

This guy has tremendous athletic potential. Too bad things appear to not have worked out.
But, without speculating about what happened teams need discipline. Rules that are followed and applied evenly to every member of a team are a good thing.
In the long run, making the right, tough decisions is a net positive.
    Good luck to Cecil.

  • Nor-Cal Scott

Concord- Agreed. Cecil was anticpated to be a solid player as a Jr & Sr. But this is why I like JT, when problems arise he has set the rules & consequences. Bye Bye Cecil.

OT- any season ticket holders going to the upcoming stadium tours? I’m going the 30th & will post a link to pics I take.

  • covinared

moren: sc offered him a scholy.

  • Eric

If he did something serious, he should be kicked off the team. I wonder what it was, because there are serious offenses and there are forgivable ones. I also wonder whether it had anything to do with not being named a starter.

  • MoreNCsarecoming

What was Tedford doing during the DeSean Jackson years

  • Juancho

Wow. Our program is a mess. One step forward, two steps back seems to be the trend the past few years. I hate to be negative on this. And to be clear I think if he did something serious he should definitely get the boot. But this is more typical Cal news.

Instead of getting news of top recruits signing for us like we were getting this time last year, this is what we have? Hopefully we can lock down a commit like Elijah Qualls or Eddie Vanderdoes sometime soon. Or else this year has been a bad year in recruiting the bay area already.

  • daredevilfan

Agreed, our recruiting is piss poor and now we are losing quality players. We were barely sniffing the middle of the pac12 last year, so I’m sensing a bottom 3rd reality now. This is unacceptible. The administration needs to have a closed door meeting and find a way to make some tough decisions and turn this around. Think outside the box. Anything.

  • rotfogel

While this does suck, the Bears are fine. I really did believe however that Whiteside was in for a HUGE year…guess not. Cal still has a ton of talent at LB (Forbes, Jason Gibson, JP Hurrell, Nathan Brussard). We’ll just have to see who rises to the top.

BTW: What are people talking about the recruiting class sucks, recruiting season has just begun and more than ever recruits are jumping ship last second….does this past recruiting class ring a bell?

  • rollonubears

Amen, Rotfogel. I’m not getting excited until February, as long as I can remember. What I am getting excited for, is Ohio State. And tickets going on sale for it.

  • Juancho

Rotfogel: because last week Justin Davis, the top running back in CA and a bay area product committed to USC and didn’t even consider Cal.

Because Michael Hutchings from De La Salle is the top linebacker in the state isn’t even considering Cal anymore (another relationship Tosh owned).

Because of the top bay area guys we haven’t locked up one and there isn’t even buzz this year – unlike last year – that we’re a leader for any.

The key is Vanderdoes the big d-lineman from Placer. He wants to play baseball in college. And Tedford being on board with letting big V pitch for the baseball team in addition to the football team will be key.

My original post in # 7 comes off as a little too “the sky is falling” so I apologize for that.

But in terms of recent developments for our program, it’s been a lot of missteps starting from the Tosh debacle.

    The Tosh debacle
The uncommitment of a lot of our top recruits
    The Wall Street Journal article
    Now this

Hell during this time frame even Zack Kline’s bike was stolen in his first week at Berkeley.

I agree with Daredevil, there has to be a closed door meeting to figure out what’s up. There’s been a lot of negative press for a big period of time now. And after the Tosh debacle the team was in damage control mode. Which is fine, but how do we re-build that positive momentum we had before Tosh left.

Let’s not forget we were a week or two away from having the # 3 rated, and highest ever for Cal, rated recruiting class in our football program history. So that’s where I want to make sure our beloved bears get back to.

I’m on the side that feels there’s a strong correlation between top recruits and winning. And if the months keep passing and we keep being passed on by the 4 and 5 star guys in the Bay Area (where Tosh had his sweet spot) then we need to solve for that. Hell Pay Dilfer to join our program.

  • covinared

the biggest effect on recruiting will be how the team does next fall. why all the panic? Programs lose guys every year.

  • Juancho

Probably b/c not everyone has a hell of a lot of confidence on how the team will do next fall. And b/c I am one of the folks who thought Tosh was doing great at recruiting in spite of the poor on field results.

But, I hope I’m wrong. And hell it all comes down to Maynard. Whiteside plays a position where we have depth. I guess subconsciously what I’m probably thinking is that this is a symptom of an overall program issue rather than the issue itself. We’ll see.

As crazy as things are, maybe this is one of those things where Whiteside gets reinstated in a few weeks.

  • Juancho

And Covina, you’re right. Moreover the loss of Whiteside doesn’t really affect how many wins I think our program will have this year. I was thinking about a .500 record for the season, and I still think that without him.

And it doesn’t affect how I think the team will recruit. Just tired of the lack of recruiting momentum since Tosh left. But that’s me, and those are sour grapes.

All in all our softball team is awesome so let’s enjoy that.

HAHAHAHAHAHA…it doesn’t get any lower than that. What a laugh.

  • Juancho

Jeff, veberable pen of knowledge. Are you doing a write up on tomorrows big baseball game? Stanfords starting pitcher (appel) should be the first pick in the draft. Should be a fun series.

  • daredevilfan

Tons of past talent, mediocre results. Current mediocre recruits, what do you think that spells for results? I know there is no “easy” button, but the CAL program always seemed ho-hum as we were hanging on to middle of the pack. I guess I just expect some urgency as our talent starts to dwindle.

  • John

I was surprised to see that Vegas has Cal finishing 2nd in the North. For all you naysayers out there, go check out http:beyondthebets.com/2012/…huge-favorites/. Some of you guys need to get some perspective for some real experts.

  • kyle

If your a betting man/woman bet that whiteside will be re-instated sometime right before or during fall camp. Its May people chill. Book it! Go Bears!

  • rotfogel

    Dare I be semi-optimistic:
Bears will have the best D Line in the country this season. Jalil, not Coleman, will be an all American…that guy is as talented a DE as we’ve ever had…not saying I don’t like Coleman, just that Jalil, if he works hard enough, might be the best DE in the country. Love the nose tackle depth. Steve Williams is the most underrated CB in the country, he’s up there with the best CBs we’ve had.
I am concerned about the LBs a bit, but the talent is there, it’ll be interesting to see which guys step up.
I’m confident that one of the freshman WR will be very good, my money is on Kenny Lawler being that guy.

I think Schwienke moving the center is good for at least one win considering how bad Galas was at snapping the ball (well that’s assuming that Schwienke can actually snap the ball decently).
RB depth is better this year.
QB play will be improved as second year under Tedford is always better in every case except Longshore.
I predict that one of the freshman OLine will turn out to be very good.
I’m really interested to see how Richard Rodgers does at TE, he looks like he could be very good.

The sky is not falling. If it does fall, it falls, but currently I believe there is a lot of reason to be optimistic.

Please reread your post and note how many times you make conditional statements and/or allude to conditional such as “if he works hard enough”, “well assuming”, etc etc).

That doesn’t sound very confident plus you have the same coach.

  • rotfogel

    MoreNC.
Notice how I said Jalil, if he works hard enough, won’t just be the best DE in the Pac 12, but in the country. So, ya, he may need to work really hard, but I’ll say this, USC doesn’t have a DE as talented as he is, even if they worked as hard as they possibly could, they won’t possess his talent level. Ditto for Coleman, USC does not have a DE as talented as he is either. So take that for what it’s worth and chew on it.

  • MoreSanctionsComing

Moren: Please read all of your posts and note how many times you have been told that nobody wants you here and nobody cares what you say.

Here’s a recruiting tip – we should try hard to chase Kalfani Muhammed at Sherman Oaks ND as both a RB and a track star. The dude, as a sophomore, was the 100 mm state champ. He has the fastest times in California this year in the 100 mm and 200 mm. He has been the starting RB at ND since he was a sophomore, and since the QB situation there is a bit of a mess, teams totally overload to stop him and he still gets big yards. And he a super nice and super smart kid – I know because my kid and his kid have played on the football team together for the last three years and will be this year (ND is playing in Dublin, Ireland on August 31 against the Arizona state champ and will be televized (I believe) on a Fox channel). He isn’t the biggest back, which means many other schools are going to ignore or downplay him, but Cal has already made an offer and there should be a push to get him. Not like I am biased or anything.

    Check out this linked article.

It is obvious you care. Why reply? Why sign on with a name which seeks to spoof mine?

What is most laughable is that you guys ran off the guy who invented that blocker to stop me. You didn’t run me off. You ran him off. Epic failure guys.

  • Juancho

    Thats awesome eric. Great tip.

5 troll posts blocked. Most of you are frequent posters here, install the troll block and be done. It takes less than 5 minutes. Then you’ll be thinking “I wonder what the Moron said…not really”

  • Easy Ed

    Hey Moron!

Rather than attacking Cal, why don’t you mention something positive about U$C? I just saw a news story about Matt Barkley and a contingent of Trojan football players going to Hati to help with construction. That’s something to be proud of.

Trolls are there to be pointed at, ridiculed, and summarily rejected. That’s what I do here.

In case anyone makes the mistake of responding to any of your comments with anything other than “GO AWAY, TROLL”, I’m here to remind them.

    ::

How proud you must be to be able to state to a group of people who don’t want you here: “You didn’t run me off.”

What you’re saying is: “I don’t care how much everyone in this groups hates me and wants me to go away, I am able to force my comments into their conversations and they can’t stop me! Ha ha ha! I’ve been doing it for years.”

If this was a conversation happening in person, everyone else in the group would have their back to you. In that situation, what kind of person would be happy to stay and brag: “Ha ha! I can stand in this circle with all of you even though none of you want me here – woohoo! I win”

    What a pathetic loser.

  • MoreSanctionsComing

Amy is so pathetic and starved for attention that making a nuisance of herself on the blog of a team she hates among a group of people who wish she would go away is the best way she can find to entertain herself. Sad.

  • BlueNGold

Only a troll in complete denial would post a comment like ‘you didn’t run me off’. Anyone who has read this blog on even a casual basis over the last several years knows that most of the CAL FANS who read and post here have been calling for the moron to be banned; its only the CCTimes’ notion of ‘free speech’ that allows it to post more and more of the same tired and not too well thought out trash talk on here ad infinitum, ad nauseum…and then turn around and pretend that no one on here has tried to put an end to it. Talk about a complete fool…

  • steveNTexas

Jauncho thanks for the details on some of the recruits.
As far as trolls go- the newspapers should adopt what many others have done -require a Facebook – Google or similar account to post.

I never liked anonymous untraceable posts. Anyone can find me – I’m Steve and I live in Texas lol

What exactly has been your contribution except to follow me around the internet? I guess Jan K Oski can’t be everywhere at once. Now that poster was a loser.

  • Will

The only Steve I know of in Texas is Stone Cold Steve Austin. Is that you SteveNTexas????

    On another note…

MoreNCS_are_ignored and sanctioned! troll post blocked

Yes, it’s great. But I don’t subscribe to the whole “ignore the troll and he’ll go away” theory. He’s a loser. EIGHT YEARS on Cal blogs – it’s pretty unprecedented trolling, and shows the mental issues that he has. So after some failed attempts to get him to go see a shrink, the best way to deal with him is to mercilessly mock him and his pathetic life, while still blocking him using greasemonkey.

In other words, he gets to see what I post, and I don’t have to see what he posts. Beautiful.

  • covinared

moren isn’t blocked because he’s good for business. each of his nuisance posts sets off multiple responses.
we can’t control what he does, only how we react to someone with serious issues that takes cowardly pleasure in annoying others.

  • Larry

Moron is a skinny, pimply faced, Asian kid who wore a red Taylor Mays 49er jersey to the CAL spring game. Sad part is the 49ers dumped him, so much for U$C greatness.

  • Will

No doubt Moren is pimply, but I’m pretty sure he’s an adult – that’s the sad part. He’s been on these boards for 8 years! It’s impossible for him to be a kid (other than in terms of his intellectual capacity).

  • rollonubears

I forgot what this article was about. But a well-fed troll is a happy troll.
