Basketball: Mike Montgomery agrees to contract extension through 2015-16 season

Monday, July 9th, 2012 at 1:48 pm in Basketball.

Coach Mike Montgomery will be at Cal through the 2015-16 season after signing a two-year contract extension, the school announced.

“Mike is a proven winner as a coach on the basketball court and as a mentor in developing our student-athletes here at Cal,” athletic director Sandy Barbour said. “His tremendous achievements speak for themselves. Mike epitomizes the mission, vision and values of our department and I am excited he will continue to lead our men’s basketball program for the next four seasons.”

Montgomery is 88-47 through his first four seasons at Berkeley, including the 2010 Pac-10 title — the school’s first in 50 years. The Bears have won at least 18 games and finished in the top four of the conference each season under Montgomery.

Montgomery thanked the Cal administration and said he’s proud of what the program has achieved.

“Thanks to the tremendous support of the University, the administration and my staff, we have established a strong foundation of success and look forward to continuing to add to the rich tradition of this program,” he said.

I like this decision. 4 or 5 more years would’ve been a bad idea, for both parties. Hopefully he stays healthy throughout, and we can win another pac10 title in a couple years.

  • steveNTexas

Fat chance of that Rollon. Do you read anything except Cal Press releases? Two years ago when everyone worshiped Monty I predicted we were going downhill due to horrid recruiting and equally poor clutch play in important games.

We are losing out on the recruits in our back yard.

two years ago we went to the NCAAs Last year we lost the playin game This year I predict no postseason at all . Watch.

A few years ago several of you make remarks that Cal was doing better than Indiana- they schools are going in opposite directions.

  • Juancho

Great coach. Mediocre recruiter at Cal. The program could be great if we recruited at a higher level. I suppose that’s the case for many of our programs though.

Just look at women’s softball. Year in, year out, one of the best recruiting classes in the country. And year in, year out we’re playing for titles.

  • rollonubears

he really ran into an incredible streak of bad luck on the personnel side of things, but yeah, something’s missing on the recruiting end. maybe he sees himself in the twilight of his career and just can’t muster the enthusiasm. still, he’s been an incredible coach, and i seldom question his decision making on the floor, especially his second-half adjustments. perhaps it would have been wise to wait a year on this, if he had 2 years left on the contract anyway. i still like having him as our coach, though. this season will be tough. if we have another lousy recruiting year next year, it’ll be a regretful decision, but he’s a far cry from tedford, and only a year removed from glory.

Monty deserved a two year contract. Why?

    1. Won the Pac 10 title for the first time in decades just two years ago.

    2. Perhaps did his best coaching job of the year the year after he lost Jerome, Chris, Roberson & Co. to graduation by placing 4th with no seniors other than the lethargic Sanders Frison in the middle.

    3. Perhaps underachieved this past year and should have won at least a share of the title, but as I have said before, if you give Monty the two NBA picks that the University of Washington had this past year, you know, the ones that won the PAC 12 Title by just one stinking game, Monty wins that title with 4 games to go in conference.

Happy to have you back for two more Monty

  • steveNTexas

My defendant in what looks like a capital murder trial has better prospects than Cal with Monty.

The Pac 12 has been incredibly weak as of late so factor that in.

  • steveNTexas

Branch Rickey said its better to let go of someone a year too soon than keep him a year extra.

Monty got his reward for us winning the (weak) pac 12 two years ago. What about now? Using that logic why not hire Bob Knight – he won lots of titles years back and they are both probably around the same age.

Monty doesn’t relate to today’s recruits.

  • rotfogel

    Well,
Monte HAS to recruit better IN THE BAY AREA!!! How does all of the talent always leave the bay? That is completely unacceptable! Just get ONE freaking recruit from here. When Tedford first came here he said recruiting the bay area was his number 1 priority. Monte likes to go to Idaho and recruit big nonathletic white guys. Enough, he’s got the contract, now get some LOCAL players!

  • MoreNCsarecoming

He had his best years with Stanford.

  • Takeoffthatredshirt

You guys are embarrassing. What a loser fan base on display here.

88-47 is great regardless of how the conference is. Clearly it’s a personal thing for some of you. Or you haven’t been Cal fans very long. Or maybe you are impatient teenagers – the maturity of your posts on Monty would suggest it.

Demanding Monty deliver 5 star recruits on a message board while eating ice cream sandwiches in your underwear is easy. Taking a program that was finishing at the bottom of the conference to 4 straight top 4 finishes is not easy. Especially, as you claim, with our terrible players.

So enjoy your misery and constant anger over a great basketball coach and a guy who cares about his players’ lives off the court.

I’ll enjoy another solid season of team basketball, excellent sportsmanship, and 20 wins.
We’ll get our sweet 16. I just hope all you nay sayers jump off the bandwagon before we get there.

    moron,

don’t ever quote me. (i’m sure Shakespeare feels the same way)

get the therapy you need please.

  • steveNTexas

Takeoff -don’t act so offended- the only difference between you and moron is you root for different teams! LOL

Takoff what is Montys record vs the TOP 50 Eh? did we win ANY vs them last year? I don’t care any more about what Monty did in the past than why Morons’ parents had kids.

We are going Downhill year by year. Monty can’t recruit even in his own backyard.

  • http://CapitolGoldBuyers.com BlakeStreetBear

Monty will win 20+ games again next year – I’d bet the house on that. Crabbe and Cobbs are maybe the best pg/sf combo in the league. Solomon will be solid, as will be Thurman. The freshman Wallace will be a stud. That is my starting five and I think Cal competes for the title again. It will be good to watch a well coached and prepared team for at least the next 2 years. We will get local recruits – someday…grrr…

  • http://CapitolGoldBuyers.com BlakeStreetBear

Tyrone Wallace will by pac12 POY by his junior year thanks to Monty’s coaching:

Big chance this season with 4 top 100 guys within 20 miles of campus. Bird, Gordon, Pitts, & Lee. Will be interesting to see if any of them choose the Bears. All four of them are solid kids I don’t think they are Prima Donnas by any stretch.

Leon Powe chose the Bears as did J Kidd just for the sake of being closer to Friends and Family so they could see them play. Those guys could have gone anywhere at the time. You would think that someone would pick them just for that reason. Even Tedford gets one once in awhile.

  • steveNTexas

Blake- Do you assume we are all ignorant? What will our record be vs top 50 teams?

umm you don’t address the fact we didn’t beat a top 50 team last year. Ok we win 20 games – will we play non div 1 schools? Will we be one of the top 65 teams in the country?

Winning 20 games if our preconference schedule is weak and our conf is rated again as “mid major” is no accomplishment unless your goals are extremely low (Did you graduate in the top 99% in high school!!). If we aren’t one of the top 65 teams in the country and invited to the NCAA then Monty has led us downhill.

  • Juancho

    Gdog gordon isnt considering Cal.

  • steveNTexas

Gordon is considering 8 schools maybe 6 seriously including Oregon Stanford and Arizona- but but he lives in California.

#12 Isaac Hamilton does have Cal on his list of 15 or so schools +++++

Jaberi Bird has Cal on his list of 5-6 schools he’s from Richmond Cal

Stephen Domingo from San Francisco has already picked Georgetown

Marcus Lee has about 35 schools he’s from Antioch and we are one of them.

Christian Wood from Palmdale has chosen UNLV

    Zena Edosomejwn has picked Harvard

Roschon Prince has 5 schools but not Cal

When it comes to OUT of State players Ive gone down the list 25-30 players and although some have 30 suitors Cal is not in the running for ANY of them.

Looking in the best light for Cal and Monty if he snags two from the above list I will be satisfied. We wont match Arizona or UCLA but we will be competitive in the future.

  • http://CapitolGoldBuyers.com BlakeStreetBear

Steve: “The sky IS falling!!! Oh NO! Last season was terrible because we didn’t beat a top 50 team! 24-10 is a terrible record because we didn’t beat a top 50 team! Monty is a terrible coach because he didn’t beat a top 50 team last year! Monty is a terrible coach because he can’t recruit any local talent! Has Jason Kidd retired yet? Sign him up to coach and all our basketball problems go away!”

    LOL!

How many top 50 teams were in the league last year?

#21 – Your football team fared no better.

  • takeoffthatredshirt

it’s funny for steve to compare anyone else to the moron troll when he’s the one obsessively posting anti-Monty and anti-Cal propaganda on a cal fan site. 3 of the first 7 posts are his same tired argument. and this is the 58th time he’s posted it here.
    ———————-
i’m excited for another successful season. bandwagon fans that care more about RPI and recruiting rankings than real basketball victories will always be bitter. don’t let them fool you into thinking Cal is not on the upswing. go bears.

#24 – Have you not read the Immortal Bard?

And I can teach thee, coz, to shame the devil
By telling truth: tell truth and shame the devil.

And I’ll be sworn I have power to shame him hence.
O, while you live, tell truth and shame the devil!

  • BlueNGold

Good for Monty. He is a good coach, and good for the program even if he does not reach any final 4′s.

  • BlueNGold

unfortunately, I have been subjected to way too much of the infernal bore.
