#9: Good point Cre8tivguy. Makes a lot of sense. I guess when I read that some schools were already in contact with players on Monday afternoon, just hours after the decision came down it conjured up a mental of a bunch of guys lined up like ticket scalpers in the Penn St. parking lot handing out brochures and touting their schools. But I like your thought better.

Great…….so this is a player who is transferring from a school that is just going on probation to a school that is just getting off probation. Yeah, college football is about building character……give me a break.

I understand your reluctance San Ramon Mike, but I bet some of those kids would like to transfer, but are afraid to be proactive for fear of backlash from their team mates. However, if a great school reaches out to them and says: “We want you to start for us right now!” That might make the decision to leave a lot easier for them. Imagine you work at a nice company in Pittsburgh that you’re happy with and didn’t think you’d ever leave, until someone comes to you with a better offer in California, and the next thing you know you’re moving to Berkeley and you’re working for one of the hottest tech companies in the country. Sometimes you need to make a change that’s better for you and your future and it takes an outside force to give you a little push.

I know college football is a slimy business across the board. I’m not naive to that or the fact that it’s big business and the only bottom line is winning…I understand all of that. But, given that, I still think to have all of these coaches swooping in on the current Penn St. players–meeting with them in parking lots and other like places==and trying to entice them to transfer demonstrates at best very questionable ethics. They’re like vultures circling a fresh kill. At least Wisconsin came out and said they wouldn’t do it. But tons of other schools have already swooped right on in. Or they’ve taken the Urban Meyer approach who said today that yes, “he has a problem raiding a fellow Big !0 school’s roster, but that he might do it anyways.”

I’ve been a Cal fan for 40 of my 45 years on this planet and I want hem to win as badly as anyone, but I’m really hoping they take the Wisconsin approach and not swoop in.

Don’t get me wrong–I’m not trying to defend Penn St. And I certainly support any player in that program wanting to transfer. I just wish coaches would leave the players alone and let them decide what they want to do. Let the player decide if he wants to leave or not on his own. Then if he decides to leave let the player initialize contact with the schools he’s interested in. It’s one thing for the player to contact a school and say “I’m interested in playing for you can we talk?” And a completely different thing for these coaches to be swarming in on Penn St. players like a cheap hustler.

I realize it’s legal and “everyone’s doing it.” I get it. But, for once take a stand and do the right thing ethically and let these kids decide what their next step is without any extra pressures.
