Football: Khairi Fortt is in the house

Former Penn State linebacker Khairi Fortt arrived in Berkeley early Sunday morning and watched as his new team went through its second practice of the summer.

Fortt, immediately eligible, awaits clearance from Cal’s medical staff following knee surgery in the spring.

But he’s happy to be here.

I like his bleached hair. Adds some pizazz. Makes me miss the student days walking through campus.

well, another year, and hoping that this will be the year that some of us can help the majority and stop feeding the troll here.

I had to take a break last year and swore off the beartalk blog after watching the spiteful rhetoric continue to be posted and responded to for months and months, but I’m back to give it another try with the hopes that the few that just can’t seem to stay away from the bait can actually sack up, realize that they do a disservice to the majority, and keep things on topic while ignoring the chronic flame baiting that goes on.

In addition, I put out a request to those in charge here to consider what benefit might exist with the lack of moderation that in turn drives users away. I’ve asked this before, as have others, yet there has never been a reply with any info as to the posting policies that are enforced here – or is it just the wild wild west? Some sort of response at some point would be appreciated so at least the playing field is level where we know what you will do and can choose to participate or not based on knowing. I see a privacy policy, but no terms of service or terms of usage. I assume that you have some pride in your product here, and in the info that you are posting

A few years back I wrote a browser addon called BlockAmy that works with all browsers and all smart phones. I was hopeful that all the users here would be as dissatisfied with the lack of moderation as I was, and could in turn use this tool as a means to ignore Amy the flamebaiting troll. The free addon runs within the free GreaseMonkey plugin. Free, as in Free Beer. Available and supported, for free, here: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/58785 Did I mention free?

We all know her story, we all have seen for how many years now that any sort of reply only further serves to empower her. There is no new news. Negative attention is good attention in her world. Fine. But that fans, students, and alums of one of the top universities in the world don’t somehow have the smarts to reason this out is beyond me.

I call on the majority here, those Cal Bear fans who prefer not to see Amys posts, and who don’t respond to Amys posts regardless of if you have the add on installed or not, and who do not enjoy seeing others feed Amy the troll, those who hate seeing the comments filled with mind numbing Amy comment after Amy comment – it is time to eat our own.

Please — call out members you see responding. Pile on them, increase the pain to change their behavior and get them to stop this. Use the BlockAmy script to block them as well if you must. Shame them. Embarrass them. And take back your blog comment area. It is BS that it has gone on this long, it is BS that the users who ultimately drive the page views that create the “eyes on the page” revenue that this blog serves to capture are forced to attempt to do this. Shame on you too BearTalk writers

    Well said and welcome back.

Jeff Faraudo/IBA, I do hope you will respond.

To all y’all who can’t resist feeding the troll, what the Beastie Boy said.

If you believe JT – and I am one of the Kool Aide Drinkers – sounds like ZM is raising his game in a significant way. Can’t wait for Nv.

    Go Bears!

  • rollonubears

No matter what, he’s going to finish his career with a Cal degree, which is pretty awesome. That’s a lot more interesting than telling people “I played football for Buffalo.” Actually, I hope he finishes his degree. He’s apparently put in a lot of work just to remain eligible. It’d be a shame if he bailed in the spring.

  • rollonubears

In addition to “no question,” another powerful quote I often hear from JT is “people flying around.” Any others? “Really, really proud…”

  • daredevilfan

I’m on board MikeD. Got no time for that other nonsense.

Hey Jeff, any more camp updates? I’m jonesin here!

  • MikeD

@Daredevilfan & wehofx – thanks, I appreciate your support and hope that you will consider piling on if the minority continue to negatively impact the majority.

    Go Bears

  • Will

Your pleas are well-received, MikeD. I’ve been pretty guilty of what you speak of (despite using Greasemonkey.

Hopefully JF just permanently blocks the troll, but his actions up till now speak louder than any words you’ll get in response to your post. But from now on, I promise to stick to sports.

After seeing some of the recent tragedies in our country, I realize that it’s a bad idea to antagonize someone who is that mentally unstable (while in the process, making the user experience for fine Bears like you less than optimal).

    Go Bears.

  • Dave

Jeff we need Football updates!!!!!!! How are those young receivers looking?

  • Dave

Haha, Daredevilfan!! I feel ya!! I need at least one update a day!

  • MikeD

@Will, thanks, ever forward, Go Bears

#2 – This is all I will comment on the matter. When I come to post on this blog I do so with football on my mind. That is directly opposed to some of the notorious non football but name calling posters around here. GOGOBears, Will, BluenGold, Sherm Boyson, etc al have not contributed one single football related post in years. Draw your own conclusions about that. My commitment to this blog remains the same. Let’s talk football. However, if the posters on this board continue to talk trash and post things which are blatantly false (including personal matters about me) then all I can do is defend myself.

By the way, may I suggest you create a couple of more Block scripts for the real perpetrators on this board. Taking to stalking me around the internet has become an addiction for these posters. Attempt to offer these scripts to scout, SFGate, YouTube, Contra Costa Times, rivals readers, etc at $5 a piece and you will make a lot of money.

  • BlueNGold

I don’t know if we are allowed to cite a competitor’s web site, but today’s SFChronicle/ SFGate has an iteresting article about JT visiting New England and Coach Belichick over the summer. One of the revelations that came to him was the need to get greater offensive production from the tight ends. Any comments?
P.S.- Out of deference to MikeD I won’t respond to moron, but if anyone seriously believes the self righteous crap it posted above, I have a bridge out in the bay for sale…

  • MikeD

@BnG – that in itself is a response, just agreeing to agree and then doing so as we move forward is all that is required. Please

  • MikeD

@BnG btw, the greasemonkey script is here: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/58785

if you are still being riled up by the comments then clearly you do not have it installed and turned on. Be the ball

    Go Bears

  • Will

JF, not shockingly, has seemingly ignored your plea, MikeD. Says a lot about where this blog’s priorities are.

  • Mr. B

    @Will and @MikeD

I 100% support your efforts. But I think it is asking too much of this blog to request that it block or ban the troll.

Currently, anyone can post under any name they choose to use. The blog would have to institute a whole new commenting system with unique user IDs, or they would have to capture IP addresses (or some similar unique identifier) in order to block or ban.

Point being, any effort to block the troll would cost the owners of the blog (MediaNews Group) some cash. Given the hard economic times and the fact that the prior blogger to this blog was let go for financial reasons, that simply isn’t going to happen anytime soon, if ever.

Laslty, let’s not antagonize the writer, Jeff. I believe Jeff is on our side – I’m sure he doesn’t like how the troll can hijack this blog. But he is a journalist – not an owner or an editor. Other than content, he doesn’t control this blog.

So let’s focus on what we can change, which you have done a great job of bringing to the attention of everyone here, even going so far as to author the script which we all benefit from.

    Use Grease Monkey.
    Ignore the Troll.
    Enjoy the blog.

    Go BEARS!
