Football: Tedford’s off-season trek to New England provides new ways to utilize tight ends

Here’s my story on coach Jeff Tedford’s June visit to the New England Patriots.

Tedford spent an OTA weekend with coach Bill Belichick and his staff, observing how they organize practice but also picking their brains on ways to use the tight end.

And why go all the way to New England when he can meet with Jim Harbaugh and learn from him. I remember when Harbaugh recruited 7 tight ends and rival school blogs were trashing and mocking him. Never heard it again after he brought Stanford back. I got a feeling Teddy is positioning himself for a job as an NFL assistant after he leads the program to another mediocre season and the Hunger Bowl or else he just can’t bring himself to learn from a guy like Harbaugh.

JF, can you share (or ask questions which might reveal) any information on Bobby Petrino being asked to visit with the Cal football staff during the off season?

Read this in ESPN’s big story today on Petrino’s first major interview since his motorcycle accident, revelations of an affair and termination:
“Since being dismissed by Arkansas, schools such as Cal and NFL teams such as the Tennessee Titans have asked him to visit with their coaching staffs. He has done so and might continue.”

Very curious to learn more. Thanks.
