Football: Luck-less Stanford lucky to win

The post-Andrew Luck Era at Stanford began with a tense 20-17 home victory over San Jose State.

The 21st-ranked Cardinal jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, but did not put the game away until Jordan Williamson kicked a 20-yard field goal with 13:15 left.

The Spartans, 57-3 losers to Stanford in the opener a year ago, battled the Cardinal to a 17-all standoff through three quarters.

Stepfan Taylor rushed for 116 yards and a touchdown for Stanford and quarterback Josh Nunes, in his debut as Luck’s successor, was 16 for 26 for 125 yards and a touchdown.
