I visited with Salesian HS basketball star Jabari Bird at lunchtime today and he explained why he chose Cal and who he plans to try convincing to join him in Berkeley.
This is a huge recruiting victory for coach Mike Montgomery, the best local talent he’s landed in five years at Berkeley and the first player from the powerhouse Oakland Soldiers to join his program.
Bird, 18, struck me as a nice kid, confident but not cocky, and determined to make a difference in the Bears’ program.
I asked him about his thoughts on an NBA career one day, and he said he hopes he’s good enough after a year or two of college to be drafted. Frankly, that’s what many top players his age believe.
If he’s good enough to leave that quickly, the Bears obviously will have had a great player.
He’s excited to have the decision behind him, and didn’t sound like he’d be giving his recruiting another thought in advance of the Nov. 14 signing date.
