Basketball: Bears get PG commit from Florida

Cal got its third backcourt commitment this fall when Sam Singer, a three-star point guard from Coconut Grove (Fla.) Ransom Everglades made his decision, according to multiple recruiting websites. Richmond, Harvard, North Carolina State and Davidson also showed interest in the 6-foot-4 guard.

Previously Cal got commitments from five-star wing Jabari Bird of Salesian High and shooting guard Jordan Mathews.

Commitments cannot become binding until the national letter-of-intent signing period begins on Nov. 14.

Scout.com reported that Marcus Lee, a 6-9 center prospect from Deer Valley HS in Antioch, has narrowed his choices to Cal and Kentucky.

UPDATE: Did a bit of leg work and discovered that one of Singer’s HS teammates is 6-7 junior forward by the name of Alonzo Mourning III — yes, the same family. AMIII had a game last season with 20 points, 12 rebounds and 15 blocked shots — and three 3-point baskets. His HS coach projects he will grow to at least 7-feet.

So, the cynic in me is thinking . . . well, you know the rest.

Hmmm…not to be a downer but, this kid is from Florida? Really? There isn’t some local kid as good as this guy, someone that will recruit his friends and possibly create a LOCAL talent pipeline to Cal? There has got to be a kid from Nor Cal who can play as well or better as this kid. Why are we recruiting and signing 3-star kids from Florida? Sacramento has some damn good players this year…Oakland…Fresno…etc.

Welcome to Cal Singer, shoot the lights out and it won’t matter that you’re a Southerner… ;) Get Lee and we’ll be hanging some banners muy pronto…Go Bears!

  • rotfogel

    @BlakeStreetBear;
Totally agree. Get the LOCAL talent first, there’s no need to go to Florida to get some second rate PG.

Hopefully Lee from the ‘Yuck’ decides to come to Cal. Why would anyone want to go to Mr. SleazeBag USA himself “Calipari”. That guy is in the dictionary as a caption next to the word ‘sleaze.

  • BlakeStreetBear

    Rotf,

I am not disparaging on Singer, he may turn out to be spectacular, I wish him the best, he’s a Golden Bear. But yes, Nor Cal is loaded with talent! Let’s get more of it.

  • bigdruid

Let’s be respectful of our newest Golden Bear. Remember, Jorge was not a local recruit either.

  • wehofx

All I know is we really needed someone to back up cobb at the 1. I’ve pretty much given up on b smith. that said, I hope he’s working his ass off and nothing would make me happier than to see b smith make me eat my words.

Welcome to Cal, young Mr. Singer.

At least we can look forward to some exciting hoops.

  • DaveintheHills

Neither Jorge nor Harper nor Crabbe are local and they’ve done alright, haven’t they?

Also, Ransom Everglades is in Dade County, which is South Florida, which is not the South. Only North Florida is ‘the South’. Florida is wacky that way.

I remember playing at Ransom Everglades in football during my glory days. That school generally churns out great athletic and scholar talent. Sam will fit right in.

    Welcome Sam!

  • Matt

Cant wait to see this guy on the court next year, backing up either Cobbs or Wallace, and this guy will get on the court early, if you go off his last year’s numbers. He averaged 34.1 points per game and 7 assists. What a beast.

  • SteveNTexas

A 3-start is not a good haul for a top tier program but I don’t know enough about the options out there. Monty did get some top recruits so give him the benefit of the doubt.
If they were all 3 star recruits I would be calling for his head again.

Yes its best for Cal to be #1 in its own market but now and then its ok to stray a bit.

  • The Wisdom Cow

The cynic in me sees a story 3 years from now about the recruiting visit to view AMIII, where his close friend, Sam Singer, really caught their eye. Whether that story is to tell how they stumbled upon a star or how they describe the effort of this great reserve that really helps out in practice is yet to be determined. If AMIII ends up a Bear, I’ll need smelling salts.

  • Dan

The 3 star isn’t what should be a big deal. Look more at who he was recruited by-

    NC State? OK.

    Davidson and Harvard. Not overwhelming.

Maybe this guy was under the radar about to blow up. Jorge was under the radar.

Then again, the cynic in me wonders ….

  • rollonubears

If he was recruited by Davidson and Harvard, that means he’s a really bright kid. I’m excited about this, and I trust Monty’s ability to recognize talent.

  • Raf

Many people are saying why didn’t Money get better talent locally… has anyone researched that?? According to ESPN Singer has a 72 rating as a junior. There are exactly FOUR undeclared players in the Bay Area with a higher rating in ESPNs database.

Arron Gordon, San Jose, 95 – Considering Cal
Marcus Lee, Antioch, 89 – Considering Cal
Darin Johnson, Sacramento, 79 – Considering Cal
Noah Allen, Salinas, 75 – Not Considering

So the second best player in the region has committed and the remaining top recruits all have Cal on their radar. There is no one else so he recruits out of the region. Seems reasonable. What else can he do!? Does he have to preform alchemy for people to be happy? Settle down.

  • BlakeStreetBear

@Raf, my point is that we ALL KNOW that there is top LOCAL talent playing in Cal’s backdoor that will not end up at Cal for whatever reason. Why should Cal not get the best of the Bay/Nor-Cal EVERY YEAR?

I’m glad Singer is aboard too, obviously if he caught Monty’s eye he must be legit. But look at how many non-locals have transferred out over the last several seasons. Cal is not easy – academically, emotionally, personally. It is a difficult place to navigate, especially if your entire support system is 3000 miles away. Maybe Singer gets homesick while John Doe from Los Gatos doesn’t? Just saying, it would be nice if the best players from Oakland, Richmond, San Jose, Fremont, San Francisco, Sacramento, Fresno, Stockton came to Cal. Heck, Jarrod Hasse was from South Lake!

  • Uh Huh!

I have ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEM with Monty recruiting nationally. Please! The job is to get the best players possible, EVERY year. Doesn’t matter where they come from. That’s not in the job description.

  • Uh Huh!

    JF:
The cynic in you is thinking what?
We have a chance in Trey Mourning due to the Singer connection, but we won’t be able to land him?
or, Singer’s stats are overrated b/c he had the help of a stud like Trey for the defense to collapse on?
I don’t get it. No, I don’t get the rest.
