or, Singer’s stats are overrated b/c he had the help of a stud like Trey for the defense to collapse on?

I have ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEM with Monty recruiting nationally. Please! The job is to get the best players possible, EVERY year. Doesn’t matter where they come from. That’s not in the job description.

@Raf, my point is that we ALL KNOW that there is top LOCAL talent playing in Cal’s backdoor that will not end up at Cal for whatever reason. Why should Cal not get the best of the Bay/Nor-Cal EVERY YEAR?

I’m glad Singer is aboard too, obviously if he caught Monty’s eye he must be legit. But look at how many non-locals have transferred out over the last several seasons. Cal is not easy – academically, emotionally, personally. It is a difficult place to navigate, especially if your entire support system is 3000 miles away. Maybe Singer gets homesick while John Doe from Los Gatos doesn’t? Just saying, it would be nice if the best players from Oakland, Richmond, San Jose, Fremont, San Francisco, Sacramento, Fresno, Stockton came to Cal. Heck, Jarrod Hasse was from South Lake!

Many people are saying why didn’t Money get better talent locally… has anyone researched that?? According to ESPN Singer has a 72 rating as a junior. There are exactly FOUR undeclared players in the Bay Area with a higher rating in ESPNs database.

Arron Gordon, San Jose, 95 – Considering Cal
Marcus Lee, Antioch, 89 – Considering Cal
Darin Johnson, Sacramento, 79 – Considering Cal
Noah Allen, Salinas, 75 – Not Considering

So the second best player in the region has committed and the remaining top recruits all have Cal on their radar. There is no one else so he recruits out of the region. Seems reasonable. What else can he do!? Does he have to preform alchemy for people to be happy? Settle down.

If he was recruited by Davidson and Harvard, that means he’s a really bright kid. I’m excited about this, and I trust Monty’s ability to recognize talent.

The 3 star isn’t what should be a big deal. Look more at who he was recruited by-

NC State? OK.

Davidson and Harvard. Not overwhelming.

Maybe this guy was under the radar about to blow up. Jorge was under the radar.

Then again, the cynic in me wonders ….

The cynic in me sees a story 3 years from now about the recruiting visit to view AMIII, where his close friend, Sam Singer, really caught their eye. Whether that story is to tell how they stumbled upon a star or how they describe the effort of this great reserve that really helps out in practice is yet to be determined. If AMIII ends up a Bear, I’ll need smelling salts.

A 3-start is not a good haul for a top tier program but I don’t know enough about the options out there. Monty did get some top recruits so give him the benefit of the doubt.
If they were all 3 star recruits I would be calling for his head again.

Yes its best for Cal to be #1 in its own market but now and then its ok to stray a bit.

Cant wait to see this guy on the court next year, backing up either Cobbs or Wallace, and this guy will get on the court early, if you go off his last year’s numbers. He averaged 34.1 points per game and 7 assists. What a beast.

Neither Jorge nor Harper nor Crabbe are local and they’ve done alright, haven’t they?

Also, Ransom Everglades is in Dade County, which is South Florida, which is not the South. Only North Florida is ‘the South’. Florida is wacky that way.

I remember playing at Ransom Everglades in football during my glory days. That school generally churns out great athletic and scholar talent. Sam will fit right in.
