Football: Cal-WSU game thread

FINAL SCORE: Cal 31, WSU 17. Bears improve to 3-4 overall, 2-2 in the Pac-12 headed into next week’s 115th Big Game vs. Stanford. The big numbers: no QB sacks and a season-high 318 rushing yards by the Bears.
Here’s my game story.
10:27 4th Q: Anderson returns and dashes 29 yards for a TD that makes it 31-10. This one seems safely in hand, just in case it’s past your bedtime.
13:39 4th Q: Andrew Furney misses wide left on 42-yd FG try. Steve Williams has a career-high four pass breakups.
END OF THIRD QUARTER: It’s 10:25 p.m., do you know where your long snapper is? Cal leads 24-10.
2:02 3rd Q: Vincenzo D’Amato’s career-long 52-yard FG gives Cal 24-10 lead.
10:58 3rd Q: Cal takes opening kickoff and marches 71 yards in nine plays, capped by Maynard’s 2-yard keeper. Brendan Bigelow had a 25-yard run on the drive and Allen made his ninth catch of the night — for 15 yards — giving him 194 for his career. That leaves him one shy of Dameane Douglas (195) for No. 2 on Cal’s career list. Bears lead 21-3.
HALFTIME: Cal 14, WSU 3. Bears are halfway to their eighth straight win over the Cougars. Total yardage: Cal 287, WSU 196. Rushing: Cal 23-157, WSU 10-20. Passing: Maynard is 9 for 16 for 130 yards with two INTs. Allen has eight catches for 123 yards — his first 100-yard game of the season. Each team had two turnovers in the half, all in the first quarter. Cal gets the ball first in the third quarter.
6:35 2nd Q: Cal answers emphatically, going 75 yards in nine plays. Maynard completed passes of 16 and 20 yards to Allen and had runs of 7 and 11 yards. C.J. Anderson got the final 4 yards for the TD and the Bears lead 14-3.
10:14 2nd Q: Andrew Furney kicks 20-yard field goal for the Cougars, capping 16-play, 86-yard drive. Cal’s defense turned back the Cougs on six straight plays inside the 10-yard line before WSU settled for three points. Cal leads 7-3.
END OF 1ST Q: Cal leads 7-0. Total offense — Cal 161 yards, WSU 101. Two turnovers each. At this pace, we’ll have 16 for the game!
5:55 1st Q: On third-and-4 from the 31, Maynard flicks slant pass to Keenan Allen, who makes two great jukes on the way to a 69-yard TD. Cal leads 7-0. Allen looked like a pro on that one.
7:07 1st Q: Michael Lowe intercepts Halliday for the Bears.
11:45 1st Q: Tedford challenges official’s call on second consecutive play — and gets the nod this time. Steve Williams is awarded interception in end zone on pass to Marquess Wilson. Cal ball at the 20.
13:20 1st Q: For the second consecutive game, Maynard’s first pass of the the game is picked off. This one skipped off fingertips of Darius Powe, picked by Cyrus Coen.
COIN FLIP: Yes, we are actually going to play a game tonight. Brian Schwenke, Keenan Allen, Josh Hill and Michael Lowe to midfield for coin flip: Cal to kickoff.
LINEUP INFO: Senior CB Marc Anthony is dressed and will play, but Kameron Jackson, the reigning Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week, will start.
WELCOME: Here at Martin Stadium in Pullman, Wash., under beautiful Palouse skies. Very unlikely to rain tonight. Temps are cool, but hardly cold. Gonna be a great night for football. And a late one. WSU throws 50 times a game, so don’t plan to switch off your TV until 11 p.m. or so.

Thanks Juancho. It’s Masse’s and it’s a pool hall with some TV’s. Hard to get the game volume turned up there. The Stadium Pub has it also but along with 10 other soccer games and ESPN. Will head there anyway. Thanks for the suggestion! Go Bears!

My only complaint centers on how fast the Cal Coaching Staff will send tape to the PAC 12 as to how pathetic the pass interference calls were made against us. 95% of that ticky tack crap is never called in the Southeastern Conference. Hate to jump on bandwagons or sound like a sore winner, but the officiating stunk tonight.

I love the running stats. But Maynard turned back into himself again and way too many passes to his bro. We need better distribution against the Trees to keep them from keying on our plays. And still way to many penalties. Mostly, just seems like the coaches have this team at midyear to be about where we expected them to be at game 1. No matter what happens with the coaches, I hope they assess this year and figure out what they can do better in spring ball and preseason to get more ahead of the curve. I know injuries play a part but I also think its systemic and maybe they just need to start the season with a bit more of a basic playbook and then add layers from there.

My pre-game analysis was nearly correct except I didn’t account for the dirty play of your #4 who knocked out WSU’s two best offensive players including All Pac 12 WR M. Wilson. Without those two guys it is hard to come back.
Next time I will account for the dirty play of UCB state with some of the most dangerous helmet to helmet hits I have seen in years.

Nice to win two-in-a-row. But I think Southern Utah woulda handled wsu last night. And Nevada prolly woulda put up 50 against them.
Yes, I am disappointed in a win. It was pretty boring to watch too. Woulda loved to have seen Treggs/Harper/Rogers contribute ANYTHING at all.
All the passes to Allen are ridiculously nepotistic and WILL NOT WORK against ljsu next week. I don’t see why teams don’t just line up two defenders against him and FORCE KA to throw to ANYONE else. (Maybe the coaching staff has something up its sleeve for next week, and KA will be a massive decoy? Or is ZM just unable to see the other guys!?)
I was disappointed that Rogers was essentially NOT involved in the offense. And that the RB carousel is so unset. imho, CJ > BIGELOW >> ISI at this point. CJ and BB look like NFL material, isi, not so much, so his role should hopefully diminish. I did like the first play of the game, lining up CJ AND BB in the backfield, did we see that formation again?
MCCAIN is a beast, 1st round material. Very entertaining to watch. S Williams was also EXCELLENT last night. The Sebastian hit on their RB was amazing, knocked him out before he hit the ground. Whammy!
Last nights performance was not good enough to win against any of our upcoming opponents, even utah on the road and certainly not ou, osu or ljsu. So are we looking at 3-9 or 4-8? Sux either way and JT is the culprit. You all know how I feel about him…moving on.
On the other hand, I am a very spoiled sports fan. Today I get to watch two teams that are ABSOLUTELY in the running for a championship THIS season and consistently play at a very HIGH level: the SF GIANTS and SF 49ERS!! What a joy to watch these teams compete. What a difference excellent coaching makes. Most of Cal’s sports teams fall into this category, some, not so much…Sandy!?!

Sherm – out of respect for GldnBear71 I will keep secrets forever. However many (and especially YOU) who have been on scout, BI, etc got punked by us. You were the TOOL being used to spread all of the false information and we just sat back LOBO. You got set up bigtime but we thought it had to be reigned in when Wisdom Cow aka Inspector Clousseau and you got the name of that woman who was innocent plastered all over SFGate.
