Football: Cal recruiting target has big day

Running back Terrell Newby, being courted by Cal among others, rushed for 360 yards and eight touchdowns Friday night, leading Chaminade HS-West Hills to a 78-34 win over a Harvard-Westlake team that had won its past six games.

The 5-foot-10, 180-pounder, who carried the ball just 16 times, had seven first-half touchdowns then came out of the game after racing 79 yards for a TD to open the third quarter.

Rivals.com ranks Newby as a four-star prospect and the nation’s No. 16 running back. Scout.com gives him three stars and rates him No. 35 among running backs.

Newby lists Cal, Nebraska, Oregon and Washington as his favorites, although UCLA is believed to be making inroads.

I was at the ND-Loyola game last night, won by ND. Two recruits – Khalfani Mohammed (Cal HS track champ in 100 and 200) and Koa Farmer (great receiver, 6′ 3″) are attending today’s Big Game.

Newby would be crazy signing with UCB state.

    1. Tedford is as good as gone

    2. If Tedford stays the kid won’t see the field for 2 years until he learns all 200 plays.

200 plays? More like 700 plays. And yet, seemingly the most predictable and easiest to stop offense in the Pac 12.

The conference ought to kick out Cal and CU and bring in Boise State and Nevada.

Newby would get a great education at Cal and have a great chance to move on to the NFL based on Cal’s track record of putting players into the League.
Cal just landed the biggest recruit in the country in any sport in Missy Franklin, California is a great school and great place to be.
He also would play a lot as a true freshman. Right now we have Bigelow, who is a great talent but he has not yet proven to be an every down back.
Cal needs to land a great talent at RB this recruiting year and whoever that back is will have a tremendous opportunity to be featured early.
Whoever the coach at Cal is…
