Football: Bears brace for explosive Ducks

Notoriously slow-starting this season, the Cal football team cannot afford to be sluggish out of the gate Saturday night against No. 2 Oregon.

Among the long list of scary offensive numbers the Ducks boast is this: They have outscored their opponents 176-29 in the first quarter. By halftime, the nation’s high-scoring team has racked up an average of 36 points.

If Cal, which has scored just two first-quarter touchdowns all season, follows that script in its home finale, this could get ugly. Fast.

If you’re in the mood to be frightened a bit, check out this list of Oregon’s scariest offensive numbers:

1 — Number of times Oregon has scored fewer than 23 points in first half
2:20 — Average elapsed time of 18 scoring drives the past two games
6 — Games the Ducks have scored at least 50 points
14 — Times Oregon has scored at least three touchdowns in a quarter
36.0 — Oregon’s season first-half scoring average
42 — Season-low point total for a game
43 — Rushing plays of at least 10 yards by Kenjon Barner
44.3 — First-half scoring average over the past three games
54.3 — Season scoring average, tops in NCAA and on pace for Pac-12 record
68 — Touchdowns scored in nine games
83.64 — Percentage of red zone chances (46 of 55) Oregon has scored TDs
101 — Oregon’s national ranking in time of possession
132 — Points Oregon scored in past two games
181 — Plays of 10 yards or more this season
341.22 — Average rushing yardage per game — No. 1 in the nation

MAYNARD UPDATE: No further word from Cal on the status of quarterback Zach Maynard, but it’s abundantly clear he will not play Saturday against the Ducks.

For the second straight day, Maynard left the practice field Wednesday wearing a brace on his sprained left knee and riding on a cart. He was dropped off at an elevator that takes him to the locker room, so he didn’t have to hobble down the stairway with the rest of his teammates.

Coach Jeff Tedford does not meet with reporters on Wednesday. He may provide an update Thursday, but it’s hard to imagine how Maynard could play.

Backup Allan Bridgford, taking all the first-team snaps this week, said he has not been told he will start.

The news doesn’t appear to be good, either, for senior right tackle Matt Summers-Gavin, who injured his right knee late in the Washington game last Friday. Summers-Gavin was wearing a T-shirt and knee brace as he limped toward the locker room after practice.

Here’s a story from Bob Clark of the Register-Guard in Eugene on Tedford, the one-time Oregon assistant.

Cal is not the only team playing Saturday at Memorial Stadium with injury issues along the defensive line. Here’s an Oregon notebook.

Here’s an interesting piece by Yogi Roth, an analyst with the Pac-12 Networks, on how the Oregon offensive line is the key to everything the Ducks do.

“He has not been told he will start”

You’ve got to be kidding me. It’s like Tedford is trying to make everyone dislike him.

  • Juancho

Jeff, as a former Cal English student I must ask, did you purposely use “Brace” in the title because of Maynard and his knee brace ?

    Well done.

  • Jeff Faraudo

You’ll just kneed to wonder about that, won’t you?

  • rollonubears

What the hell is going on with this team? Totally dysfunctional. Please God, let it be that JT retires on Sunday. If he were to pull this as a military commander, he’d have been dishonorably discharged.

  • covinared

    28 point spread?

  • Steve W

Oregon scores 42 points at the 7:16 mark of the second quarter and then calls off the dogs. Final score: 49-14. Cal scores all of its points in the fourth quarter, but Allan Bridgford injures his wrist trying to grab the ball on an on-sides kick attempt with 1:32 left in the game.

  • Will

So you’re saying we can win the fourth quarter, Steve??!?!?!!!

  • Juancho

Jeff from one journalist to another, i commend you.

  • JimInChico77

The Ducks offense is like the old single wing. Defending it is all about playing assignments and not getting out of position.

  • scottybear

Maybe we win the coin toss!

  • DuckThis

Cal has done a good job of stopping the Ducks but it seems the 2012 team is better than previous years. The game will be closer than the 28 point spread.

Who will Tedford throw under the bus this year for faking injuries?

  • Eric

Tedford will certainly find someone to blame. I’m guessing Bridgeford for not demanding reps all season long. We lose by at least 5 TDs.

(note sarcasm dripping from your computer screen)

  • MoreNCsarecoming

I love how your fans didn’t think that faking injuries against Oregon was unsportsmanlike.

    They call it “Gamesmanship”.

HAHAHAHA… if that’s the case then it is a cowardly strategy.

I recommend that your players drop their Social Welfare courses and other mickies and gimmees and at least enroll in some drama classes. What the heck. You have a great actor as a HC. You might as well have him teach the class.

    LOL…what a bunch of losers.

  • Dan

Hey Pat- I don’t see anybody stating or implying what you said. You just make stuff up. How does Pastor Rick feel about that fact that you lie? You are delirious.

Clearly you are here just to be negative and obnoxious- how does it feel to have that be your sole purpose in life, of trolling another teams many websites? What a sad, pathetic existence you little loser. You might want to consider cutting WAY back on the Cheatos and get outside from your basement in daddy’s house. Really.

  • Eric

    @Moron/Adam Morrison/Rush Limbaugh:

I realize after totally slapping you around on the UW game thread (amazing how my “infantile knowledge” of football so clearly established how wrong you were) this is like shooting fish in a barrel, but the cowardly strategy of faking injuries is a reason Tedford should have been fired in 2010, just like underinflating balls against Oregon is a reason to fire Kiffin (Daddy and Son) but instead they got some poor schlub to take the fall. Cowardly indeed.

  • Will

Did anyone else hear about the “rogue” $C student manager? Surely, he acted ALL on his own, right? LOL. The cheating just never stops….

  • rollonubears

Think this guy cares who coaches our football team next year?

  • BlueNGold

Hard to say how the new chancellor will deal with the athletic dept. But my hunch is that he may not be as friendly to it and the AD as Birgenau has been.

  • BlueNGold

Here is an interesting article about Chip Kelly that is posted on today’s Yahoo Sports:

  • Does anyone seriously believe that this ‘student manager’ went rogue and was acting entirely on his own? Seriously? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

  • Hey parasite- Did you actually READ the thread from BI that you posted the link for? Did you happen to notice that all but the first poster took exception to the lead post? Can you actually read?

By the way, it must be pretty frustrating to keep posting links to BI when you are not allowed to post there…can you say BANNED?

  • MoreNCsarecoming

So you are in agreement that feigning injury is a form of cheating?

  • Is that what you read in my post? Are you really that stupid?

  • Oh yeah- you answered to ‘parasite’. Brilliant!!

  • Will

    ESPN piles on:

    My favorite line:

“Yet add up all the silliness and it doesn’t come close to denting USC’s reputation as badly as Kiffin’s predecessor did.”

  • DuckThis

After this weekend’s game Teford will chalk up another…

And Helmet-gate (taking your helmet off to stop the clock)

  • BlueNGold

    Re: Will’s post-

So in other words, Kiffin would have to pull off a major scandal to even be considered among the ranks of the sleazy cheater emeritus?

  • SFGate/SFChronicle has an article on its site today featuring “Most overrated coaches”. I would post a link, but its one of those annoying slideshow deals. Bad news is JT is number 8 out of 20. But good news is number 2- Lame Kiffin.
