TIPOFF: 7 p.m. Sunday at Haas Pavilion. The game will be shown on the Pac-12 Networks.
The Golden Bears open their regular season against the Roadrunners, a Division I independent awaiting entry next season into the Western Athletic Conference.
Bakersfield opened its season Friday with a 62-60 loss to a Texas-Arlington team that won 24 games a year ago.
Cal is calling senior point guard Brandon Smith day to day with a left shoulder injury he sustained last Tuesday in the Bears’ exhibition win over San Francisco State. The guess here is he will not play.
If that’s the case, there is little choice but to start freshman Tyrone Wallace at shooting guard and move Justin Cobbs back to his usual point guard spot. With sophomore Ricky Kreklow 2-3 weeks away from returning after foot surgery, the Bears are short on guards.
Coach Mike Montgomery will be looking for improvement in a couple key areas after the Bears allowed S.F. State 17 offensive rebounds and did not effectively defend at point of attack or in the paint.
THE SERIES: The Bears lead 1-0. Cal won 91-75 during the 1977-78 season when Bakersfield was a Division II program.
ON THE ROADRUNNERS: Bakersfield took a hit when returning PG Issiah Grayson (10.2 ppg, 5.8 apg) was ruled out for the season following summer knee surgery that is not healed as quickly as anticipated. Senior Zach Lamb was moved into his spot for the opener.
Bakersfield was 16-15 last season, losing 86-62 to Oregon in its only game against a Pac-12 opponent. Senior guard Stephon Carter is the top returning scorer at 12.1 ppg.
The Roadrunners are in their second season under coach Rod Barnes, who spent the previous four seasons at Georgia State but coached eight seasons at his alma mater, Ole Miss, taking three teams to the NCAA tournament. Barnes is the only person who earned all-SEC honors as a player and SEC coach of the year.
WHAT’S NEXT: Cal returns to action Tuesday at Haas against Pepperdine. Tipoff is 6:30 p.m.
