Football: `The first place I will look is in the mirror’ — Tedford on Bears’ 2011 shortcomings

By Jeff Faraudo
Tuesday, November 13th, 2012 at 2:53 pm in Football, Mid-week.

Even before he sits down with Cal athletic director Sandy Barbour next week to discuss his future, Jeff Tedford said he will dissect what’s gone wrong in his 11th season as coach of the Golden Bears.

“The first place I will look is in the mirror. … How can I be better as a coach?,” Tedford said Tuesday as his team prepared for its season finale Saturday night at Oregon State.

Asked if he’s received any assurances from Barbour, Tedford said he anticipates meeting with her early next week. The Bears (3-8, 2-6 Pac-12) will miss playing in a bowl game for the second time in three seasons, so their game vs. the Beavers (7-2, 5-2) is their final chance to make a statement.

Why didn’t he look in the mirror after Nevada, or Ohio State, or Utah? It’s like Obama during this recent campaign telling us what plans he has to create jobs the next four years. WTF!! Should have done that four years ago. They both have had a disappointing four years. Now is not the time to ponder how coaching improvemnts can make him better. Should have been after Oregon in 2007, or USC in 2010, or Nevada in 2012. Same old tired game plan right after. No answers in the mirror, sorry JT.

  • BlakeStreetBear

You can start being a better coach by not ALWAYS punting or kicking FGs on 4th and 1!

Nothing, and I mean nothing, deflates a team and its fans more than when the coach throws in the proverbial towel on a potential game changing 4th down play.

Maynard had every reason to be irate at JT after JT chose to settle for a FG from the 1 against FCS team Southern Utah! WTF JT!?

Look in the mirror? No just look around the stadium after a decision like that and you’ll see the disappointment on ALL the players, fans and other coaches faces. The only people in the stadium who enjoy those decisions are those rooting for the visitors. How many times this season has oregon punted on 4th and 1? I bet the answer is 0. While they are gonna play for an NC…JT is gonna be packing boxes and looking in a mirror…

Come on Scottybear let’s keep it on football. Politics stop when we put on our Blue and Gold.

    “I will look” ?

  • Juancho

I thought the subtle political references were dying out. Guess not.

Unlike Obama, Tedford doesn’t have the latino vote.

  • Juancho

Jeff I thank you for making mention of Zack Kline, the inspiration in my life. That kid is an example to us all. Our lives wouldn’t be the same without him.

And for the folks who have been bringing up politics, Kline is apparently from a staunchly Republican/conservative family. So kudos on that one.

More loads of crap, rhetoric and platitudes from Tedford. What a joke, but what would we expect?

Maybe this off season he can go visit Bill Belachik and the Pats – AGAIN – and find out out to get the ball to the best tight end in college football. Maybe he can go visit every NFL team and get a copy of every play that isn’t yet in Cal’s playbook yet and sure to add those- more is more, right?

I weep for Bigelow, Bridgford, Kline, Rodgers and every player on the roster. They will all continue to be one legged men in a butt kicking contest. Doomed before the season even starts, and before every kickoff. Is it too late too see if Presbyterian has a 2013 open date?

As for us, were all screwed, just like players. At least we will have that in common and can root them against the man. But that will start next year for me. I will be rooting for a loss to OSU that makes the Oregon game look like a closely contested contest so it will obvious to everyone, even someone as clueless as Sandy Barbour, how bad Tedford really is.

Oh, but we have so many injuries. I take back everything I said.

Good for Steve Williams for speaking up and reinforcing from inside the program what we have all seen from outside the program for many seasons. So let’s see, we get that the offense is too complicated, at least one bright player (I’m sure there are many, many more) get that it’s too complicated, but our head coach …. Not so much.

As I have said MANY times, Oregon has true freshmen log major minutes in their offense and defense every season, but rare is the Cal player under Tedford, especially on offense, that sees the field much. Tedford can’t find a way or create a way to get one of the most explosive, talented and game breaking players I’ve ever seen, Brendon Bigelow, more than a few token plays a game- usually when the game has long been decided in the other team’s favor.

Also, I dont blame Tyler Rigsbee for speaking up supporting Tedford. That guy has been allowed to retain his starting position all season, along with his brother, despite both being mediocre at best, while also causing multitudes of penalty yards, usually in drive killing fashion. They both look sloppy and out of shape to boot. If I were Rigsbee, I’d be backing Tedford too. Why don’t we ask the Rigsbee’s backups off the record what they think of Tedford?

By the way, both Rigsbee’s were highly recruited and I have no doubt they could be very good and greatly improved – if they were playing at Oregon or SC. Just one more “symptom” indicating the greatness of the Cal program under Tedford.

Tedford on this Sunday morning into the bathroom mirror of his Alamo/Blackhawk/Danville McMansion … “Mirror, mirror, on the wall, whose the best coach in all the land”?

Mirror – “Sorry Master, bur that would be either Bill Walsh or Vince Lombardi”

JT – “I meant best living coach”

Mirror – “that would be Chip Kelly master”

JT – ” but mirror, how can you say that? I think I’m the best there is!”

Mirror – “Sorry master, but you’re not even the best coach on this side of the bay. That honor goes to Coach Ladouceur at De La Salle High School”

JT – “well, that guy is really good, I guess I’ll have to settle for second best then. No shame that!”

Mirror – “Sorry master, but that honor goes to Coach Bergman at Monte Vista High School”

JT – pondering that he isn’t even the 2nd best coach in his neighborhood, then calls out to his wife … “HONEY! We NEED to get a new mirror! NOW!!!”

And there you have Tedford looking into the mirror at himself first. We’ve traveled this road before, and heard this story before. This fairy tale does not have a happy ending for Golden Bear alums and fans.

Turns out tedford has a broken mirror in his home. It came in a 2 for 1 deal. He has six extra mirrors in the garage. But hes chosen to leave that broken mirror up for the past 2 years.

None of those other mirrors have had any first person experience in years.

This just dawned on me: Cal has not hired a proven head coach in at least the last 30 years. Check it out:

    Jeff Tedford – OC Oregon
    Tom Holmoe – DC Cal
    Steve Mariucci – Quarterbacks coach
    Keith Gilbertson. – OC Washington
Bruce Snyder – OC LA Rams
    Joe Kapp – ????
    Roger Theder – ?????

It will be interesting to see if Cal will pony up the money to hire a HC with a track record of winning, good recruiting and the intuitive ability to mold and motivate today’s young athletes to their optimum performances.

  • Juancho

Next year will mark 4 years since we were ranked in football.

  • southseasbear

Steve W – Bruce Snyder wasn’t OC of the Rams, just RB coach for 3 years. Nevertheless, he was head coach at Utah State for 7 years, winning conference championships in years 3 & 4.

    Juancho es en fuego

Memo to Tedford…….I know you’re known as the QB guru, but I think you have a fetish for Diva WRs…..the last 2 you’ve allowed to ruin your teams……Jackson turned the locker room into a war zone, which torched that season….then you somehow land Allen and because of that we’re forced to witness Maynard for 2 years, who by the way looks just as over his head as he did when he started his first game at Cal…which brings me back to your QB guru status….it’s officially gone, disappeared…just like your head coaching ability

  • RT

Second Memo to Tedford…..While you’re looking in your mirror, please also google “Peter Principle” Sound familiar?

  • Raf

am i missing something? why does the title say ’2011′?

  • Uh Huh!

    Man, you folks are vicious.
