Poll: Should Cal have fired Jeff Tedford?

Now that Cal has fired Jeff Tedford, was removing him as football coach the right move?

Jon Becker

  • ScottyBear

Anybody have an inkling what it was that Sandy discussed with JT on Monday that couldn’t be resolved? Reports said they had discussions on how to immediately improve the program but couldn’t come to agreement before SB fired JT. Was it a salary share for assistants or surrender of play calling? Sounds almost like SB wanted to keep JT and save face but JT’s attitude in those meetings pissed SB off and she finally said screw it he’s gone.

  • Juancho

Scotty good point. I guess i was left withe that feeling also. That the plan was to impose changes but keep tedford. And the changes just werent agreed upon.

One thing jumps out as a possibility.

Usually when a coach is fired so is his entire staff. But in this case we are keeping on an interim basis:

    Arroyo the playcaller
Gould the rb guru who predates tedford

Maybe it was changes to the staff that were unagreeable.

I.e., why not clancy ? Why not kenwick thompson when our linebackers were a bright spot this year despite all the injuries.

Kenwick oversaw recruiting. Maybe changes to recruiting accountability came up ?

  • ScottyBear

Juancho: Can’t believe they kept Arroyo if he was the play caller. Play calling was the main reason we sucked this year along with Bigelow not playing more. Maybe the reason the others were fired was attitude.

BYW, I saw Zach Kline and Joe Southwick (Boise State) play at San Ramon along with Nottingham at Monte Vista and Zach Kline is really that good. By far the best I have seen in high school. Can’t wait for his reign!!

  • Juancho

Scotty that is music to my ears. I remember seeing this kid named kline at san ramon and thinking this guy is pac 12 ready.

    I cant wait.

  • ScottyBear

    In Kline’s name, amen hermano!

  • Will

    Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

  • Juancho

    Happy thanksgiving as well.

Boaltblue i offer a truce and hope you can accept my apology for antagonism. Everyones pulling on the same rope again.

Will dont forget youre rope guy.

  • JimInChico77

Wondering who is watching the shop now, Michalzik? Someone needs to make sure the offseason training programs get implemented and follow the recruits. I noticed that Mike McHughs, the Director of Football operations is no longer on the staff list. He kind of held all the logistics together.

Happy Thanksgiving to all. Thanks for making this an interesting place to visit.

  • The Wisdom Cow

Happy Thanksgiving. Hope you all hung your ladels last night and got lots of yummy goodies from the Ever Turkey.

  • Juancho

    Wisdom please explain.

  • The Wisdom Cow

You don’t know the Ever Turkey, Juancho! Not only is He more powerful than that snivelling Linus’ Great Pumpkin, He’s USA specific!

Nothing beats gravy and other yummy goodies found in one’s Thanksgiving Day Ladle. Mine holds a quart.

I wonder if He could help in the coaching search.

  • Alaska Bear

Such drama. Well, sorry for Tedford’s departure, but it had to happen, and winning wasn’t the only issue. I will carry good memories, though…even having witnessed The Play firsthand, there were special moments like the triple OT win over USC and smashing Stanford to reclaim the axe after many years. And I appreciate that through it all he was a man of integrity and dignity, a role model to the young men he molded. I hope his successor is half the man he was.

  • wehofx

    Happy Thanksgiving!

#101 Scotty, had this thought sometime last night. (It’s not the night before Thanksgiving without copious amounts of alcohol.)

What if sb was playing hardcore hardball and the 2 day delay was to light a fire under the donors to get the full amount of jt’s buyout in the bank/escrow?

  • BlakeStreetBear

I too have some fond memories of Tedford, who doesn’t? But I also have many, many, MANY painful memories that were absolutely a cause of Tedford’s penchant towards a spinelessness that was masked as a calculated conservationism:

He almost ALWAYS punts on 4th and 1 or 2.
He almost ALWAYS settles for field goals on 4th and 1 or 2.
He almost ALWAYS takes a kneel at the end of halves instead of trying to do something, anything positive.
He seems to ALWAYS run draw plays on 3 and long, essentially handing the opponent the ball.
He never tries fake punts or kicks.
He rarely asks his QBs to throw deep balls.
He says things like “We won the second half.”
He refuses to identify and play his “home run hitters”.
    etc etc.

No doubt Jeff Tedford is a great man who did many great things for the University. Unfortunately he is just not a very competitive man a la Jim Harbaugh or Mike Montgomery or Bruce Bochy, all championship winning coaches.

A coach like Harbaugh would have crushed Southern Miss in 2004 (no kneeling on the ball at the 2 yard line) to MAKE SURE that there was no poll voter funny-business and then he would have campaigned just as hard as Mack Brown-noser did. We would have gotten a Rose Bowl that year and again in 2006 if Tedford had been a little less nice and a little more competitive. Think about that.

NCAA football is a big frickin’ deal ($$$$$$$$$$) and whoever is in charge of your college program better be as cut-throat as a Wall Street banker, that is the truth and any of you pie-in-the-sky types wanna say we need a man with integrity as the next coach I say no, we need a man who wins football games. Otherwise we will continue to lose by 30+ to teams who understand the real nature of NCAA football…

If Cal wants to compete, they need a competitor as head coach, not a wet rag.

Sorry Tedford, but this is how I will ultimately remember you:
2012 Southern Utah game, early 2nd quarter, trailing 3-0 to an FCS team at home, 4th and goal at the half-yard line, send in the FG unit. WTF!?

I think Tedford was the ONLY coach in the country who would do that to his players and coaches and us fans: settle for a 17 1/2 yard FG against an FCS team! I thought he should have been fired for that one spineless move alone.

  • BlakeStreetBear

Sorry if that last post was slightly vitriolic – spinelessness in a “leader” is obviously one of my pet-peeves.

Hoping everyone has a great Holiday weekend and that the Basketball Bears can get their groove going and win this “Anaheim Classic” thingy down south.

And that Sandy and Co. are only looking at coaches who WIN FOOTBALL GAMES. We don’t need another “ambassador” type roaming the sidelines, we need a BOSS.

  • daredevilfan

BSB, I agree. Quality human being, buy a pu$$y headcoach, at least in later years. I don’t feel melancholy, he had a lot of great memeories, and a lot of cash, and this happens to all coaches. But we need someone like you describe above. I pray we get one, and soon. Happy Thanksgiving to all! Looking forward to working out tomorrow, after stuffing myself today. Go Justin Forsett!

  • Juancho

Reports are tosh lupoi is heavily recruiting the five star ever turkey.

  • daredevilfan
  • ScottyBear

BlakeStreet: Agree with your #114. Could add several more, including the closing of practice then running the same old predictable offense the next three years. Agree that we need someone like Harbaugh to get the Bears coming out of the north tunnel and expecting to kick the shit out of the other team until the final gun. I remember Tedford getting pissed off at Steve Levy for handing off to Byron Storer (I think) at the two yard line to score in the final seconds of the Holiday Bowl instead of taking a knee. You can’t finally put these guys in the game and tell them not to score.

  • Larry

    # 119, it was Brian Schutte not Byron Storer. Sorry, but I get all rainman with this stuff sometimes.

  • MoreNCsarecoming

    Hey Losers

Let me remind you that in two different “Little big games” Tedford had his third string RB enter the game and throw half back option passes for TDs when the game was completely out of reach.

Doesn’t sound like he lacked the killer instinct.

This board has never had the reputation for clear thinking.

  • covinared

Moren and all: check out youtube: Hitler learns ucla beat usc.

  • MoreNCsarecoming

I heard after yesterday’s loss to TCU, Mack Brown might become available.

If you hired him that you be one less revenge game you won’t loss anymore.

  • Will

This Thanksgiving, I’m most thankful for having a life and family/friends that care about me.

  • wehofx

Just finished watching dvr of last night’s win over drake. First look at this year’s team.

GOOD NEWS: Wallace got game. If he keeps playing like that, he’ll be starting soon and real shot at frosh of the year.

B Smith is playing under control again.

We have back court depth, esp if krekolow’s foot heals(sp). He didn’t play because he re-injured foot during lay up drills.

    Thurman has improved.

    Solomon has improved.

Thinking about going to game tonight. Great seats for $28 general admission.

BAD NEWS: Solomon is still prone to brain cramps and dumb fouls.

    Thin in the front court.

GT will be a good measuring stick. Go Bears!

  • SteveNTexas

While the cat (Jeff) is away the Bears still play – tonight v GA Tech. Neither team ranked and both have won their games.

Not watching USC v ND – we know USC is sleazy but so is Notre Dame in a different way. IN Texas high school teams’ are often named after college teams- lots of Longhorns Aggies and the like. In EL Paso tiny Cathedral High had the name “Fighting Irish” for 88 years – Notre Dame noticed at a Sun Bowl a couple of years ago and threatened lawsuits if they didn’t change it. Cathedral, a small and poor school couldn’t afford litigation and relented.

    So both are sleazy –

  • Juancho

Jeff “the cat” faraudo has a certain ring to it.

  • wehofx

the ‘ho’s d line gave up 3 rushing td’s to coug’s team that hadn’t rushed for 1 td all year.

hope to see sark, wilcox, kiseau and the ‘ho on the hot seat after their bowl defeat.

  • Nor-Cal Scott

#114 BlakeStreetBear – great post. Had Tedford gone for it on 4th & 1 vs Ohio State and CJ or Isi got it, who knows what mindset the team might have had all season. It was a non-conference game, a game most people would believed we’d lose anyway, why not have some huevos rancheros and GO FOR IT!!!!!

I’ve been saying the entire organizational chart of the offense made no sense. Too many cooks in the kitchen. Run/Pass Game Coordinators? A QB coach who calls the plays yet our OL coach is the OC? Previously Tedford worked with the QBs, installed the offense, called the plays, etc. That is what he does best! He delegated, brought in average OC’s (Hello Andy Ludwig) and our offense went to the dogs.

    1. Petersen
    1B. Gruden
    5. Anderson, Strong, McIntyre, etc….

  • Steve W

    Anderson – Utah State
    McIntyre – San Jose State

We could effectively double their salaries and still only pay them half of what JT was making. And then throw in some incentive clauses based on wins and bowl games. These two men resurrected hopeless programs. And leave plenty of cash in the till for quality assistants.

  • MoreNCsarecoming

Before you can hire a coach, I would make sure your program won’t be under sanctions. Your academics are deplorable and you are flirting with NCAA sanctions because of it.

I have been involved in a thread over at BI in the last few days which is about ready to break the recent record for most viewed.

Daddy and his close friends who are big UC East Bay supporters have just about given up on the program for good. The deal that Tedford made with the NC boys has really turned them off. The athletic department can expect some hits in donations from now on.

  • Juancho

Colleagues. 730 today on espn 2. San jose state versus louisiana tech. Mike macintyre vs sonny dykes. The cal job bowl.

  • wehofx

Juancho, thanks for the heads up.

Just read about Anderson on wiki. Impressive but limited cv. imo it’s always better to have worked for a coupla three other “Name” hc’s like Mcintyre and Dykes (taggert, strong, roman)

HC search should provide fodder for more than a few 100+ threads with sec having 4 hc vacancies and maybe Tx, too.

Pressure in on sb BIG TIME! A make-or-break hire for her.

  • wehofx

…and our Bears looked good last night. The big problem is only 7 man rotation (not counting krekolow{sp?}) with Thurman and Wallace. Bak was dnp.

  • daredevilfan
  • The Wisdom Cow

Having finally watched 2 bball games, I like the grit this team has shown. Jorge had intangibles, but his propensity for a ill-timed turnover kinda balanced it out, on the offensive end (his D will forever be missed).

Wallace has definitely impressed me. He can slash to the hoop better than anyone we have had in a LONG time, and I mean in traffic. And the blocks! That is some fantastic D against guys driving right on top of him. What a future this kid has!

It’s still a crime the front court is so lacking in depth. They can’t afford any injuries up front, and depth would allow them to absorb fouls. It remains the true blemish on Monty’s otherwise fantastic tenure.

  • MoreNCsarecoming

So how bad was your season?

    At one time you had the most penalties of any offense in the country;

    At the same time you led the country in your QB getting sacked;

    You finished second to last in the Pac 12;

You got blown out by Stanford, USC, Oregon, Oregon State and Utah!

    Nevada beat you badly

Utah returned not one but two KOs against you

    Mariotta broke an Oregon record with 6 TDs against you. Think of their great QBs – Fouts, Harrington, Smith, Clemens and Mariotta as a freshman broke the record against your D;

    Oregon State wiped you out in the biggest win ever in the games against each other;

Stanford held your offense to -7 yards rushing!

    Still no BCS game
    Still no Rose Bowl appearance
    Still no Heisman winner
Still no outright Pac 10 or 12 championship

You have parents of players sending PMs to posters on BI revealing sensitive information

Your stadium has a 320 million debt service because your ESPs have been a epic failure

And now your program rests second to the bottom in the Pac 12 in APR.

  • ScottyBear

Moren: You are sinking to even lower new lows. After the season USC has had, why don’t you just go troll their sites? They can use your useless and endless blah blah blahs there more than here. You aren’t clever, relevant or insightful. Nothing. Just blah blah blah. The time you take to assemble useless statistics and trivia affirms what a zit faced beer bellied basement dwelling little piece of shit waste of life you are. Most telling is your lovely sign-offs of “LOL”. If a turd laughs out loud in the basement by herself and no one else is there to hear it, is it still a laugh? More like a cry for help. Keep beating off in front of your computer. The weather is absolutely beautiful outside this weekend (I’m on a laptop on a sailboat on the bay, dork!) and you continue to show up from the dark basement of a life you lead. Keep laughing out loud. No one hears you. or cares. Bye! Remember? You said you were leaving. Adios Kiffin!

  • Juancho

Brothers who are we rooting for ?

Lane “tedford” kiffin against notre dame.

    Sjsu over louisiana tech.

    Ucla over stanfraud.

  • Will

I might actually be rooting for Kiffin tonight. If he loses today, maybe he’ll get fired. NO ONE in the Pac-12 wants that. He’s a failure.

  • MoreNCsarecoming

First, I like the dark blue colors on pucla. You guys can keep wearing that banana yellow

Second, Stanford is so much better of a football program than UC East Bay. I laughed so hard when the TV guys called Stanford players “smart” and “hard nosed”. When was the last time anyone called your players “smart”. LOL

Third, I like how all of the freshman QBs stepped up this year in the Pac 12. Mariota, Hogan, Hundley, etc. Freshman QBs can win in this league.

Then finally notice how many ranked teams got beat today. When is the last time you guys beat a ranked team?

  • SteveNTexas

Arizona State and Oregon are both playing ranked teams in bball and can advance the Pac 12 a bit.

I’m for USC over ND both schools are sleazy but ND pretends its not and it has more to lose.

    Stanford and UCLA don’t care.
Gb and Rodgers over the Giants who are 3 pt favorites.

Jason Kidd is playing well for the Knicks – a few games ago he got 17 points anf 5 steals.

  • MoreNCsarecoming

Hey second to the last place losers

    Watch the SC-ND game.

First even though it has been a disappointing season the stadium is packed. Why is that? It’s called tradition. It is called team pride. We support our team and players.

Second I hope you see the next Heisman winner. Wittek has a gun! When that kid a junior the Heisman talk will begin.

Third we are playing the no 1 team in the nation and the no 1 defense. We don’t give up like your team.

Fight On! It’s all about a tradition of excellence.

  • GOGO Bears

And at the half, the Cheaters are on their way to a their fifth loss. Remember how our troll taunted us for playing in SF for a bowl? Now the cheaters would love to have that bowl.

Just what did happen to that prediction that the cheaters would get another nc, troll? Oh wait, as long as the cheaters are losing you won’t be posting so I can’t get an answer. LOL.

  • MoreNCsarecoming

I will be happy to give you an answer when you answer why the UC East Bay football team has such a deplorable APR?

I guess they are taking too many Social Welfare classes.

Like one of daddy’s friends said – “Is Social Welfare really a major?”

  • GOGO Bears

While you are at it, please list one friend who isn’t a realtive. And please tell us how law school is going. And will you ever have a date for New Year’s Eve — oh, forget that: Will you ever even leave your house on New Year’s Eve or Valentine’s Day?

All alone little troll. This site will never get rid of you because you have NO WHERE ELSE TO GO. How come WeAreSC banned you? How is it being all alone. Tonite is Saturday night — I can’t stay to talk with you cuz I got places to go. Not you. We all know you are home alone every friday and saturday.

Pity the troll –= this is all he has.

  • BlakeStreetBear

    And by the way…
who is excited, NOW, to attend the Cal-northwestern football game in the absolutely beautiful Strawberry Canyon on 8/31/2013?? I KNOW I AM!!!

But I was most definitely not feeling that way a few days ago. Thank you Sandy for executing the first step in the 2-step plan to bring Cal football back to relevancy. Now pull no punches and hire the right guy, please.

  • BlakeStreetBear

The basketball team is VERY good and entertaining. Crabbe, Cobbs and Wallace make a great backcourt. Cobbs is looking like a 1st round draft pick and could end up being a very good NBA PG. Crabbe still has a couple of holes in his game, he tends to shoot off-balance a bit too often, but still, he’s got serious game – don’t underestimate his passing, defense AND rebounding. And Wallace will be in the NBA too, his basketball IQ is off the charts, not to mention his physical gifts.

It is true that the frontcourt is not deep, but Kravish, Solomon and Thurman are a solid group of bigs and should only improve, especially Solomon (hopefully).

BSmith is BSmith, if he can play almost as well as he did two years ago he will help bigtime. But his shot is poor; there was a funny sequence last night when Crabbe and then Cobbs both passed up decent looks from 3, only to swing it to Smith who threw up a brick, lol. That should NOT happen again…

Kreklow is the wildcard. If/when he comes back healthy, this team will have its “glue” guy to complement the talent above and a pac12 championship could be in the works. I hope hope hope his foot is not badly injured…I really wanna see what this guy can do for a basketball team!!

I am actually more worried about colorado and oregon being the teams to beat in the p12 than I am about ucla/az/lsju. Boyle and Altman have good squads and they may be coming into their own as coaches…but, in Monty I trust! Can’t wait to attend the unlv game!

  • MoreNCsarecoming

I forgot to mention that Sherm will use his favorite excuse when back up against a wall

“I need to go out tonight. I can’t answer your question”.

Sherm you are a world class coward.

  • BlakeStreetBear

Greasemonkey says: “MoreNCS_are_ignored and sanctioned! troll post blocked”

FU troll! I am deaf to you, LOL!!!
