Football: Keenan tweets `Decision made!’

Cal wideout Keenan Allen tweeted this morning: Decision made!

No details provided, so he could be talking about anything or anyone. We don’t know for sure.

But . . . we can all assume he has decided to enter the NFL draft.

Interesting that he apparently is not waiting to see who the new Cal coach will be, but that suggests Allen knew all along this would be his decision.

And it’s probably the right one for him. His knee injury apparently isn’t serious — Jeff Tedford said he’d have been healthy for a bowl game if the Bears had gotten one — and Allen is projected as a consensus high first-round pick in the NFL draft.

A new coach doesn’t really change that equation.

Of course, Allen does not have to officially declare for the draft until sometime in mid-January (trying to find that date), so theoretically the new coach still could sit down with him and revisit the decision.

I doubt that changes anything.

Cal’s sports information office knew nothing further about Allen’s announcement. Stay tuned. Will update this story as it develops.

One of my friends just told me that Twitter is starting a rumour that we hired Tim DeRuyter. The fast hire would fit in with the two commits he recently committed. I.e., maybe the transition staff has been telling guys we’ll have a coach by week’s end.

  • Juancho

I wonder if Decision Made is referencing they were told about the new coach.

  • Juancho

Nevermind. Friend apparently played a joke on me.

  • Sean

Worst case scenario: Allen’s decision to enter draft was based on the coach they just selected…

  • The Wisdom Cow

    Opinion of tweet made!

  • Juancho

Can someone who is familiar with the Twitter Internet research this:

That gentleman, who may or may not be Trevor Guyton seems to be claming DeRuyter was hired.

  • A-Dubble

Smart choice. No need and come back and injure yourself further, without getting a damn dime. Go Pro!!

  • 1brsfan

maybe he just got his grades for Fall semester and the decision was made for him.

  • DaveintheHills

good for, Keenan. Time to cash in.

  • wehofx

Juancho, trevg92 = trevor garcia. No connection to t guyton.

Tim DeRuyter wouldn’t be a bad hire. Quick look at wiki page, he seems to have cv/record equal to MacI, G andersen, W taggert.

Still hoping against hope for c petersen.

hc rumors are running wild. Only a desperate coach would take buffs’ job knowing ad pulled trigger on his predecessor after 2 years.

  • 1brsfan

looks like DeRuyter has one up on Mac and Andersen… he coached a BCS conf team in a bowl game and won…

  • Juancho

Ill support the new guy regardles. But id rather have hue jackson.

Macintyre is my top guy. Then andersen from ut state. Then almost anyone else.

  • rollonubears

fresno state’s academics will train him well to take over here. considering that was the primary reason for JT’s termination, this decision, if true, is concerning.

  • Juancho

I think this Twitter guy is just a rabble rouser. 95.7 FM reported that Hue Jackson is in Berkeley now b/c he has his interview for the job today.

  • 1brsfan

@rollon – None of the candidates being thrown out there come from a university with the academic rigors as Cal. You’ll be hard press to find many that have that type of experience unless we go after Vandy’s coach.

  • Juancho

1brsfan – Mike MacIntyre is an alumni of Vanderbilt. Where his dad was a coach also.

  • Juancho

Correction, he did two years at Vandy when his dad was there, then transferred and graduated from Georgia Tech, another rigorous school.

He’s also coached at Temple and Duke. Both rigorous schools.

  • covinared

Keenan makes his decison the week before finals…

  • ScottyBear

Juancho: All things considered, I really like Mac also. Bay Area & California recruiting roots already established, extensive background in SEC territory, and best of all, he got his left-for-dead program into the Top 25 BCS standings in under thre years. With Cal’s facilities, talent and starving alumni donor fan base, he would be a great choice. Plus, he just flat out looks like a great coach on the sidelines. Zoned in, animated, emotional but controlled. Not going to miss Tedford’s zombie persona on the sidelines.

  • Juancho

Covina that’s hillarious, haha. And our academic rating takes another hit.

Scotty, couldn’t agree more. I went to a San Jose State game this year I was so impressed with the program. Even though there were a lot of empty seats, it just had that feel of “something is going on here.” And that something is Mike MacIntyre.

    1brsfan #8:

Your disparaging comment is classless and totally undeserving of someone, KA #21, who has given so much to Cal Football.

  • 1brsfan

Boaltblue- chill out it was a joke.

Juancho- thanks for the collegiate history on Mac. I stand corrected in that he would understand balancing academics and football at Cal.
