Football: Cal makes it official — Dykes

By Jeff Faraudo

As expected, Cal made an official announcement Wednesday evening that it has hired Sonny Dykes as football coach.

Cal will introduce Dykes at a news conference Thursday afternoon.

“Sonny Dykes is one of the brightest offensive minds in the country, running a high-octane style of football, one that I’m certain will allow our student-athletes to thrive and that our community will love on gameday,” Cal athletic director Sandy Barbour said.

“However, it was far more than his history of a top-ranked offense and his proven success on the football field that solidified my decision; it was the way he described his responsibility to the university at large and his commitment to creating a climate of comprehensive excellence and success for his student-athletes.

“We discussed the unique place that Berkeley and Cal Athletics occupy in higher education, standing for both academic and athletic excellence. Above all, Sonny values the opportunity to develop relationships with and have an impact on his student-athletes, staff and community.”

Dykes, whose Louisiana Tech team led the nation in scoring this season, said,  ”I’m looking forward to bringing our exciting and enthusiastic brand of football to Berkeley. Our objectives are numerous. In addition to winning football games, we will strive to develop the total student-athlete in the classroom, on the field of play and in the campus and local communities. We want a win-everywhere mentality.”

Welcome coach Dykes. Cal is awaiting your expertise. Get us to the promised land of Pasadena and you will become a living legend. Please, oh please, unleash the slumbering beast that is the Cal offense. May your offensive genius (and a damn good D-coordinator) guide us to the Rose Bowl.

Early over/under for points/game for next season: 40.5

    Go Bears!

Dykes questionable choice. Way down near the bottom of my list. We could have done much better. This isn’t Podunk U.

What about defense? Seems that it’s a foreign concept to him.

Hate to say it but I miss Tedford already

Seems like you have a good sports background Sportskaster, so I respect your opinion. However, I don’t see how this any worse than Kelly being hired by Oregon. Everyone, including Oregon fans, weren’t exactly enamored with that one. And Oregon was not Podunk U, they hired a guy with two years of FBS coordinator experience, but before that he was at New Hampshire! Dykes has a much better pedigree (and is from a coaching family).

I’m not getting all the carping, sorry. Is Petersen maybe the best coach out there? Yes, but it’s obvious he just isn’t willing to leave Boise yet. None of the other names mentioned by most anyone come with “innovation” attached to their name.

I’m willing to give this guy a chance. Much will depend on the defensive coordinator. If we can’t stop Oregon and SC, we don’t have a prayer anyway.

But when it comes to football you are Podunk U…or worse

  • Steve W

He wasn’t my first choice by a longshot, but I am so starved for good offense, good quarterback play, scoring touchdowns in the redzone, ad infinitum, that I am starting to feel the excitement.

We only need to go back to the 1996 season to get a glimpse of what Cal is going to look like next season. Remember that triple overtime game where Pat Barnes threw eight touchdown passes and Cal eeked out a 1 point win against Arizona? There’s going to be a lot of games like that.

  • daredevilfan

Nice call Steve W. But add in better facilities and better players.

  • Juancho

Is anyone going to ask about my emotional state given my klineological beliefs ?

  • Larry

I was at that 1996 game. I rushed the field and was able to give Mariucci a high-five. Good times!

  • daredevilfan

Juancho, how are you? Nothing some alcohol and carnal fun can’t cure I hope. I choose to believe that Dykes + Kline + defensive studs will take us to the promise land. Sometimes to become happy…you just need to decide to.

  • Larry

At first I didn’t think much about Dykes. But after he was hired, I am hearing good things about his coaching style as far as his players respecting him and stay out of trouble. They go to class and generally do well in the class etc. I think we are headed in the right direction there.

More powerful offense then Tedfords in the past 3 years, headed in the right direction there.

I think a solid DC would put us over the top. I say 7-5 or 8-4 next season, then Rose Bowl in 2014!

  • Larry

As to close the Tedford chapter and open the Dykes chapter, we need a half-back pass to a wide open WR on the first play against Northwestern!

  • Juancho

Daredevil, the shame of it all is I can’t pursue either this evening. I’m on board with Sonny Side Up. I’m worried about how out of shape he is. Can you imagine if he bulks up like Tedford did ? We could have a Mangino on our hands in a few years.

Hopefully everything works out. The D question is bigger than the coordinator though. I’m hoping he tweaks his offense to incorporate some pro-set to at least have that capability to pivot in games where we need to eat clock.

Kind of exciting. Kind of worrisome. Which I guess is the case every time there’s a new coach.

Hire does show we definitely don’t have the draw we might have thought.

  • 1brsfan

Juancho- maybe we do have some draw. Word is he turned down offers from SEC team, B1G and Slow team and ACC team to take Cal job. If true then maybe we got one of the better options out there. Maybe it took SB longer as he pondered his options and negotiated with Cal.

  • go8ears

He will lose weight when he gets here as his diet will probably change. The South is infamous for the region’s trademark fried and fatty foods. I bet he will miss them though haha.

  • http://sportskaster.blogspot.com sportskaster

Dykes may turn out to be OK, but for now he’s a C-lister. Don’t the Bears deserve better? Look at all the quality coaches in the Pac-12–Kelly,Shaw,Mora, Rich Rod, Kiffin, Sark…

Look at what Mora did with essentially the same team (though with a more developed Hundley) at UCLA.
Is Dykes capable of that kind of miracle?

So look at what Cal adds to this impressive list of coaches–Sonny Dykes from some dinky school in the deep South.

I would have gladly taken some of the SEC leftovers, like guys fired from Kentucky (Joker Phillips) and Tennessee (Derek Dooley. They’re better bets than Dykes.

Hopefully, lurking somewhere in Dykes is a Chip Kelly, aching to get out.

Hope I’m wrong. I’ll be pulling for him. But he’s a long shot.

My point is that Cal should be past settling for long shots.

  • calbearclaw

Hey sportscaster – Take your “list” and clean your bathroom with it. Coach Dykes is the Cal head coach and I support him completely. Let’s Go Bears.

  • Easy Ed

Dykes is going to get his hands on more talent in his first recruiting class at Cal than he’s had in all his time coaching at Texas Tech, Arizona and Louisiana Tech. I’m really beginning to feel good about this hire.

  • shaka

Sportskaster’s point about this selection being a hope and a prayer is on target. As trite as this is, it is what it is so get over it. Hey with a good class, the right D and special team coaches, this may be SB’s finest hour, time will tell. This guy is a QB and wide receiver’s dream choice.
