In 2012, Cal’s total defense ranked #92 in the country, at 441.25 yards per game. In my book, that does not equate to good defense.

As you pointed out, La. Tech was last (#120), at 526.08 yards per game. That also does not equate to good defense.

But as I pointed out, while a good offense can support a bad defense, a bad offense can make a good or ok defense look bad.

La. Tech was second in the nation in total offense, at 577 yards. per game, a net positive of approximately 50 yards.

Cal’s offense was #74 in the country, at 391.25 yards per game, a net loss of approximately 60 yards. That was notwithstanding a likely first round draft pick WR, a returning RB that gained 1,300 yards, and the alleged best TE in the country. When you have a very poor offense that gives up sacks and goes three and out a lot, your defense will suffer.

Cal had an ok defense in the last 5 years. Its total defense was ranked #28 in 2011 (good, but not great, with Pac-12 POY); #20 in 2010 (very good to great); #71 in 2009 (not good); #24 in in 2008 (good to very good). Over the last 5 years, an average of #47, which is fair to middlin’

It occasionally played great during the last 5 years, and occasionally (and more typically this year) it played terrible. It had some individual players who were super-stars – Kendricks, Alualu, Bishop, Follett, Syd. It had tremendous potential.

But to say, as you have said, “Tedford did coach some great defensive teams,” is simply not supported by the statistics. Great defensive teams are top 10 defensive teams.

As for penalties, La. Tech was tied for 115th in the country, with Oregon, this year. Guess who was 117th.

Tedford coached great defenses? Really? Tedford coached poor offenses, which entirely wore out our defenses. 3 and outs every time destroy the best defenses.

I realize you are unhappy with Dykes. Fair point. But your analyses having fallen far short of the mark thus far. And you were a very big Tedford supporter long after the ship had sailed. So how about you take a year off from rendering judgments. If we go worse than .500 next year, I’ll be the first in line to say you are right. If we get 8+ wins, even with a crappy defense and tons of penalties, I hope you’ll do the gracious thing.
