Football: Dykes lands 2 recruits

Offensive line prospect Erik Bunte, who de-committed from UCLA last month, told Scout.com he will attend Cal next season.
“I’m done with my visits,” the 6-foot-7, 310-pound three-star prospect from Mission Viejo told the recruiting website after a weekend visit to the Berkeley campus. “I’m 100 percent locked in with Cal.”
Cal also got a weekend oral commitment from Dannon Cavil, a three-star wide receiver from San Antonio, Texas.

This is what we were all talking about. We had to make a coaching switch because you need to create excitement and energy, which will bring the recruiting and then you if you can get a fast start at wins, it can all feed on itself for awhile and self-perpetuate. Keep at it Sonny! Also, quite an example today with Capernick and Luck. Reinforces the fact that you absolutely need NFL caliber talent at QB in order to go places in your conference. I pray that Sonny gets one of these QBs hot and confident and believing we can be special.

Oh sonny day! I was completely writing off this recruiting class as a bust… but both of those guys are in the top 5 of our current recruiting class (4 stars on ESPN). Several top guys up for grabs. It might be decent after all. Hopefully he can keep it up next year and get some good wins along the way.

I see three stars- need much better to be impressed but its a start.

  • Easy Ed

Get me another hit of that Sonny “D”

Both of these guys are ESPN 4-star recruits. These are great pickups.

Cavil is 6′ 4″ and great upside. Nice commitment!

I believe Sione Sina and Kyle Kragen also committed. Look for those announcements to come out over the next couple of days.

Sina is a 3 star DE from San Mateo CC, and Kragen is a 2 star LB from Diablo Valley College.

Sina has excellent offers, including Oregon, UCLA, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Pitt.

Kragen was an Illinois commit that we flipped.

Ryan Riddle, Sid Slater & Matt Giordano were all JC transfers that Tedford got in his first year. THese guys anchored the defense and were stars . JuCo recruiting is great. Go Bears!

RE: #15 & #17 on “Football: Report says Gould to land UC Davis job,” thread.

today’s la times, lame says he’s not going to hire a DC until after their bowl game, jan 31.

if SD, Buh and Co keep up their aggressive recruiting, I’m liking our chances more and more of flipping some of those 4/5 star recruits like Redmond(sp), Cravens, Vanderdoes(sp) and Hutchings.

Then, if lame’s dc is a retread like D Walker, January and the days leading up to loi day could be huge.

    Go Bears!

…and here’s an excerpt from Tony Franklin interview. I highlighted his statement I found most significant. I LOVE that they use 3 back power running formations. I can’t recall seeing any spread O’s that use 3 rb’s. Great for 3rd and short & Red Zone.

    >>>Tony Franklin System ‏@tonyfranklinsys
“We want to be the fastest team in America.” – Coach Tony Franklin –> http://sbn.to/UuKTdi #TFS #Playfast #BearRaid

“It doesn’t resemble Leach’s offense at all,” said Franklin. “Basically, what we try to do is play fast and play with great tempo. That’s the number one thing we try to do. We want to be the fastest team in America and we want to constantly attack. So we do multiple things out there.

“We don’t go into a season thinking we’re going to throw more or run more. We try to be good at both and whichever one is working, that’s the one we emphasize at any given point in time.

    >>>”We’ll use power sets with three backs. Sometimes we’ll have seven offensive linemen in a game.>>>

Sometimes there will be no running backs in a game and five receivers.

“It’s just kind of a deal where you get your best players on the field and the more guys that play, the more camaraderie you have. That’s the way we do things.”

What that adds up to is not endlessly working to try and out-scheme their opponent but rather determining how they can impose their will on an opponent instead.

I’m geeked for the Bear Raid. Thinking about making the trip for the Spring Game.

Once again, why wouldn’t you want to come to Cal and play for Sonny and Tony? Regardless of what side of the ball you are on? This team is gonna be exciting and Sonny and co are gonna get these guys playing fast and hard!! A big bearhug welcome to all the new recruits! Welcome to Berkeley, now let’s get to Pasadena…

    Go Bears!

  • Juancho

    Who’s Tony ?

  • Juancho

I’m working too hard. Tony is Franklin. I guess b/c the following sentence referenced both sides of the ball I figured Tony was a coach on D.

We need to aggressively pursue Hooper from DLS. The kid has size, speed and great hands. Would be a great addition to the Dyke’s high octane offense as a tight end.
