Football: Dykes to make practice open to public

By Jeff Faraudo
Wednesday, December 19th, 2012 at 3:35 pm in Football.

New Cal football coach Sonny Dykes’ holiday gift to the Golden Bears’ fan base: Open practices.

“Open the gate. Come on in,” Dykes said, when asked about his policy on opening practice to the public. “We don’t have any secrets.”

With rare exception, practices in recent years under former coach Jeff Tedford have been closed to media and fans. Dykes said it won’t be that way going forward.

“I don’t know why you wouldn’t want (fans) there,” he said. “This is not my program. This is Cal’s program. They should be engaged and they should be able to check it out.

“It’s their program.”

    I feel another Ode brewing….

  • Will

    Loving this guy’s attitude.

Hopefully the play on the field reflects it.

After reading this and seeing the A’s new shortstop’s press conference, I feel a tremendous breeze of fresh air blowing through. What refreshing interviews! Go Sonny!

  • wehofx

What? No more Def Con 5, Eye’s Only, rampant paranoia closed practices?

If I were in sb’s shoes and heard all the things Sonny D says in the interview, I too, woulda gone, “He’s perfect for Cal!”

The only statement I don’t agree with is about the tough out of conference schedule but even there he was candid.

Daredevil, look forward to your next BTB lyrical creation dropping.

    Go Bears!

  • Juancho

Minstrel i look forward to your latest art.

Will – any concerns as rope guy to having too many secrets stolen with open practices ?

Boy am i glad theyre opening them. Even i got tired about complaining about this.

Would anybody mind if i nicknamed sonny dykes the michelin man ? I believe they look alike. I dont want it to be misconstrued like my blessing maynard as gumby was by my dearest friend boaltblue.

  • Juancho

Scotty, fellow a’s fan ? What did nakajima say or do ? Bernie related ?

  • The Wisdom Cow

    Now, I’m on board.

This means a gimp like myself will have the chance to take my kid to see the Bears when I’m having a good day. I’m surprised how much this makes me happy.

We’ll get updates from whoever happens to catch some of a practice. I mean, this is going to be crazy. Practice has been off limits since before the personal media revolution. It used to be the beat guy would give a once every week or two picture of what’s going on. Now, we’ll get an update from somebody every practice.

It’d be a good time for Bear Territory to be resuscitated. Anyone remember the “Undefeated in the Pac 10″ song?

  • daredevilfan

Genius Oxen… we have a believer. The groundswell is growing (or is that just the Michelin Man taking a walk?)…let’s keep the good news coming. More Coords, more recruits, no cheetos, yippee! Jesus and Kline are the reason for the season!

  • covinared

spies must be dealt with using the most extreme measures.

  • Will

Rope guy has nothing to hide. It’s a skill that you couldn’t replicate if you tried.

  • Juancho

Very nicely done minstrel. I feel like that was to the beat of a taylor swift song.

Covina i believe you mean EXTREME PREJUDICE as chief prejudism officer rob bear would say.

    Will good to know.

Bovine i agree with the good feeling. As soon as i read that i thought to myself i could take my baseball team on field trips.

  • ScottyBear

Juancho: Nakajima was way cool. Signed with the A’s because he thinks Billy Beane is cool and sexy and he wants to do the Bernie dance. Huge grin the entire time. Love the guy already!!

  • Juancho

Thats awesome. Havent been this excited for the a’s season in about a decade.

  • Larry

    Honey Buh Buh!

  • Larry

As long as they don’t hire Steve Marshall to coach the OL, I’ll be happy.

  • Larry

…”A big surprise for Dykes while watching tapes of four games: He believes the offensive line is better than advertised. But he said the Bears probably need six more players in those positions.”

Uh, aren’t there 5 OL in the game one time? So if we need 6 more, won’t that mean the whole OL sucks and they need more than they have to improve from last year?

  • gobears91

Sonny D is saying all the right things and his enthusiasm is infectious. Recruiting is fantastic. Haven’t been this excited about a season since the Tenn. Home-and-home openers.

  • Will

Juancho, good luck with the Angels and Rangers though.

Giants will need that same luck with the Dodgers..

  • The Wisdom Cow

Off topic, but I figure a moment of disgusting black humor worthy of the Squelch could entertain.

I have walking pneumonia, which at the start of Winter is NOT a good thing.

And then it hit me – The Wisdom Cow brand Lung Butter.

I’m picturing the Land O Lakes box with the Atom Heart Mother cow in place of the kneeling Indian.

I could make tens of dollars!

  • gobears49

    Juancho,

Gobears91 says recruiting has been fantastic. I could be wrong, but I don’t think we have signed a 4 star guy or higher since Dykes was hired. What do you think of the recruits we have obtained since Dykes came on board. I think you’re the resident expert on individual recruiting rankings.

  • gobears49

BTW, I was a bit worried when I read the Dykes didn’t use a tight end this year at La Tech. We need to get the most out of prize tight end, Rodgers, who clearly has been underutilized. But I think I read that when Dykes was at Arizona a few years ago he coached Gronkowski, their very special tight end, now a star in the pro’s. I read Dykes will use a tight end at Cal.

Here’s a good article I hadn’t seen before summarizing the coaching history of Dykes and that of his father, Spike Dykes. Good to read he likes the running game.

Thanks Wisdom, I’m now inadvertently fasting. Remember to throw us BTB a cow-bone once you are rich!

  • Will

    Pat Forde on the hire:

    California: Sonny Dykes.

Last stop: Louisiana Tech, where Dykes won 17 games the past two seasons, the most anyone has won there in a two-year span since 1984-85.

Why leave: Tech won nine games and still was not one of 70 teams selected for a bowl this year. While part of that was self-inflicted due to administrative failure, it also reinforces where the school sits in the college football universe. If someone else calls, you go.

Grade: A. Dykes brings a fast-paced, pass-centric offense to the Pac-12, where the Bears are looking for something to counter-program the smashmouth powerhouse across the Bay at Stanford. This could work out really well, if Dykes reacquaints himself with West Coast recruiting after spending 16 of his 19 years as a coach in Texas or the South. He did spend three seasons with Mike Stoops at Arizona, which should help.

    Good news.

Also heard through the grapevine that Klahfani is totally fine with Gould leaving for UC Davis and is good to go with Cal.

@Wisdom – good to hear you applaud this move by Sonny D. I am sure you are still reserving judgment on the overall hire, but the more that Sonny does things that prove his committment, innovation, and desire to win, the more I think you will find a reason to be supportive.

Twitter Rumor on new DL coach:

Short on the Wolf Pack’s best recruiter, Barry Sacks (also Nevada’s defensive line coach), reportedly headed to Cal — http://bit.ly/TaCAWi
    >>>

Great name! I hope it’s true. Another strong recruiter!

    Go Bears!

  • Kotempman

Boy, I just can’t get enough of Sonny and what he is saying…soooooo excited…even though I have known Tedford since I was a senior and he was in the 9th grade and followed him religiously all the way to Cal, it was time to go and I wish him nothing but the best. Now that Sonny is here my allegiance has grown even more to Cal! I have read and listened to everything he has said and …heck!!!….I would jump at the chance as a recruit to play for him!!!! Go BEARS!!!!!!!!

  • BlakeStreetBear

Is it August 31st yet? Can I hibernate until the NCAA bball tournament at least?

Being already this excited in December…I wonder how we’ll all be feeling the last week of August!?

    Go Bears!

  • Juancho

Bovine can we get a health update.

  • Juancho

Gobears49, i am a fan of most of the guys that have committed under dykes watch.

Lets start with dannon cavil. The kid is 6’5″ and runs a 4.45 forty. Even zack kline cant do that. But more importany he was an ole miss commit and had excellent offers. So what one might say ? Well, the kid is in Texas meaning we are continuing to pull in top kids from other key states. And the kid is 6’5″ now. Meaning he could be bigger a year from now. And hes a good student. Also some recruiting ratings i believe list him as a 4 star.

Sione sina. A local kid. Some rate him a 4 star. Hes from a JC meaning well need him immediately bc the d is going back to a 4-3 and we need bodies up front. Plus, hes an island boy as one might say like moala and lopa. And maybe sina who just escaped junior college will light a fire under their A…. Hes big hes fast and he has long hair.

Kragen. Not as sold on hjm. Seems good enough for a scholly in this class though.

Bunte. Hes a 4 star and per espn ratings near the top of our class. And we took him from ucla. Guy is 6’7″. He has the frame to be an nfl left tackle.

Cam walker is a 3. But hes a good player and fills a need.

Heres what im most happy with. Almost all the assistants hired are stud recruiters. Buh is at tosh level. And the staff has kept each guy so far. And hopefully will be bri gi g 4s and 5s next year.

  • Juancho

Your brother juancho is on vacation for the first time in a long time. Anyone know of some relatively affordable nice places to visit / stay at in or driveable from the bay area ?

Im looking to lounge, eat and drink for a few days.

  • Larry

Juancho says,”Im looking to lounge, eat and drink for a few days.”

Shit, you don’t need to leave the house to do that.

  • Juancho

    Good point larry.

  • Will

Vegas. Long drive, but totally worth it. Stay in a cheap motel, find some all you can eat buffets, and party it up brother.

  • wehofx

    Definitely Vegas!

Re-Post: Sione Sina is a HITTER:

Juancho: Go to Sea Ranch up the Sonoma Coast. Greatest spit on CA for eating drinking and relaxing while looking at the Pacific Ocean.

Sounds like Newby had dropped CAL out of the mix after Gould was gone, but Ingram has revived his interest. At least I get the sense that the new staff is energized and really working hard at recruiting. Things might not work out as well this first year due to coach turnover, but in the long run this energy will pay off. and maybe they can still continue to make a splash this year, who knows.

  • daredevilfan

sounds like Cameron Hunt is not solid, on the fence. We’d better get an Oline coach soon and he can set up camp at Cameron’s house!

  • gobears49

    Juancho,

Thanks for the info on the recruits. Don’t know where you guys get your info about this subject. Probably subscribe to a recruiting service. I’m a Cal fan, but not THAT much of a Cal fan.

Good to read that the new assistants are great recruiters, but I’m going to wait and see if they are in the class with Tosh.

As for a recommendation for a nice place to stay in the Bay Area, I like to go wine tasting, but Napa is too snooty for me. Best place in Sonoma area to do that is not too big and nice local wineries surrounding the town (and in the town as well) is Healdsburg, about 10 miles above Santa Rosa (though it is much nicer up there in the summer). For a nice, clean hotel that isn’t very pricey, I suggest you stay at the Best Western Plus. Just checked and room rates for, say, Dec. 28 are $128 for a king size bed and $116 if you belong to Triple A.

Here’s some reviews of the Best Western from Yelp.
