Basketball: Montgomery hoping Smith returns

Cal coach Mike Montgomery, asked Tuesday if he expects senior guard Brandon Smith to play Saturday at Stanford, said, “Yes I do, but I’ve been fooled before.”

Smith, who has missed the past five games with a concussion, underwent further tests Tuesday. “We’re hoping he gets the green light,” Montgomery said.

Sophomore guard Ricky Kreklow (foot) remains sidelined indefinitely. He has played in just one of Cal’s past six games and just five games all season. Montgomery said Kreklow continues to rehab to strength the foot. He aggravated the injury during a nine-minute stint at UCLA two weeks ago.

Montgomery confirmed that Kreklow, a transfer from Missouri who sat out last season, is not eligible for an additional redshirt year.

— The Cal-Stanford game at Maples Pavilion will be aired locally on KICU-36. FSN is broadcasting the game, and has agreed to have KICU pick it up Saturday. Tipoff is 1:30 p.m.
