Football: Pendergast to USC as D-coordinator

Former Cal defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast has been hired by USC to replace Monte Kiffin in the same position on head coach Lane Kiffin’s staff, multiple media sources reported.

Pendergast is expected to be introduced Friday by the Trojans.

Pendergast spent three years as Tedford’s defensive coordinator but also has experience in the NFL.

The move came just days after Arizona hired former Cal offensive coordinator Jim Michalczik as its offensive line coach.

Also in the wake of new coach Sonny Dykes clearing out all of former coach Jeff Tedford’s staff, long-time running backs coach Ron Gould was named head coach at UC Davis. Former Cal linebacker coach Kenwick Thompson, who was elevated to associate head coach last season, is believed to be joining the new staff at San Jose State, likely as defensive coordinator.

All the coaching talent and all the NFL quality players we keep churning out. Why didn’t we win? Go Sonny! Go Bears!

  2. Dan Says:

ScottyBear – because Tedford sucked. It’s just that simple. What could have been.

I’m with you, let’s go Sonny!

Pendergast’s reputation sank with Cal’s results under Tedford. For the first year or so at Cal, he was widely praised. We’ll see how good a coach he is after coaching at USC. I’m sure they have some of the best talent in the country on defense.

Dan: Agreed! Tedford was the roadblock. Full speed ahead!

Oh my, is he going to do well with those recruits.

  6. Picard Says:

Great news. One win and counting.

Funny that all the assistant coaches seem to have moved on to better roles than the ones they had at Cal…pretty clear that Tedford was the issue, I agree.

I don’t know Cal B, it’s pretty rare for a coach to go backward in this line of work. Coach M made a lateral move, and this one is lateral, too, and maybe a step down when we look back on it in a couple years. Mont Kiffin is crumbling fast.

Agree. In JM’s case it is actually a demotion in title – OC back down to O Line coach – and, I’m guessing, salary. Both earned based on the substandard O line play of the last 2 years.

imo, CP getting hired by lame is more a statement of lame’s tenuous status at $c.

in la media, lame promised a “Big Name” hire. Names floated: chizik, former miami hc??? and aliotti. Based on cp’s record for the last coupla years, I wouldn’t call him a Big Name. Lame was desperate.

Edward Tandy has committed to Cal.

and per twitter: ray davison. DL

And looks like AJ Richardson is no longer a commit. With the thinking being he’s another guy the Michelin Man and staff removed the scholarship offer.

Davison runs a 4.7 40, not bad for a linebacker. And, Boise State wanted him. Good enough for me.
