Cal/Tedford should have been visionary in recognizing Tosh as a unique talent and given him the title of "Director of Recruiting" or "Recruiting Coordinator", putting it on par with the OC and DC positions in stature and $$. That's essentially wht UDub did.

If Tosh was still here. last year's team would have been no better, as Tedford was still the HC and essentially te OC. He sucked, we would have sucked, he would still be gone, and no way SD gets hired without keeping Tosh.

GoBEars #25 yeah #33 and I think w all those studs on D we would have won a coupla 3 more games but not enough to
get to .500.

Jack Austin 3 star wr de-committed from boise and is now Cal.

Seems like w the 2 players SD encouraged to de-commit and all the new commits, the staff prefers big wr's and db's.

In addition to udub, ucla is making a big recruiting push. pac 12 north and south is gonna be tough.

True gobears. Tosh was the czar of our recruiting. Which is why we lost all the top local guys this year except for goff. Hes a special case though. His parents are both alumni so he was coming here regardless.

A point of clarification -- I don't think Juancho's list of players are U of W recruits, but rather players Cal had previously lined up (verbally) to attend Cal, or had Cal high on their list. I believe I know this because I think Armstead decided to go to Oregon (though I don't believe he had verbally chosen Cal before Tosh left). I don't subscribe to recruiting blogs like some of you guys do, so I don't know exactly who had verbally committed to Cal before Tosh left.

Juancho,

Thanks for the U of W football recruiting list of players who recently decided to attend that school.

I have previously written, similar to what you just wrote, that if Tedford had been willing to give up some salary to keep Tosh, it would have given him a pass for a year, based upon getting a top of the line recruiting class that Cal had lined up before Tosh left. If Sandy had been smart, and really knew football (does she?), she should have known that the recruiting class Cal had on paper could easily be taken away if Tosh left. That is, indeed, what happened. So I blame Sandy for not suggesting Tedford give up some salary to finance part of Tosh's significant raise, and perhaps raising Clancy's salary so it would be meaningfully higher than Tosh's. Cal's football future would be much brighter if we had kept that recruiting class intact, even if our record last year was the same (I doubt the new recruits would have made much difference last year).

But I guess the downside to what I am saying is, if I am right, and we actually kept the great recruiting class coming in last season, Tedford could have easily been given the pass I suggest he might have gotten with a good recruiting class, so we could still be stuck with him. Still, we can dream of how much brighter our future would be with a top 10 recruiting class for last season and Tedford gone.

IT doesn't say much for our basketball team that after the initial barfing - we switch to football.

With 5 games into the Pac 12 and none with Arizona we should be 4-1 and talking about conference championships ( although AZ was still favored preseason) and NCAA seeding.

Gobears ill share the same story i got from a friend who works for birgeneau.

The money was not the issue. The issue was tedford didnt agree to the second increase because he didnt want to mess up the pay scale of his staff.

Essentially tosh would have been making similar to clancy, his boss.

They were near sighted in not realizing that recruiting is worth the $. A visionary leadership would have said tough cookies. Tosh is worthit for the following reasons:

Shaq thompson
Arik armstead
Dj foster
Jordan payton
Mike hutchings
Eddie vanderdoes
Aziz shittu
Lj moore
On and on and on

Just look at basketball. The coming of jabari bird is buying monty a pass this season.

I blame it all on Sandy for not asking Tedford for not taking a cut in pay to pay for Tosh's big raise. If she knew football, she would have known that it's much easier to have a top-ranked football team, to fill the seats she needs filled, if you recruit top-ranked football talent. Tosh would have continued to do that for Cal, if he was paid what he was worth. Now he does that for Washington, who DOES pay him what he is worth.
