Basketball: Bears soar to No. 40 in RPI

Two weeks ago this morning, as the Bears prepared to play at Arizona, they were sitting at No. 75 in the RPI computer rankings.

This morning, having won five in a row since then, they are No. 40.

Cal has three regular-season games remaining, all at home:

   — Thursday vs. RPI 177 Utah

   — Saturday vs. RPI 29 Colorado

   — Wednesday, March 6 vs. RPI 67 Stanford

Cal could lose any of these, but also could sweep. They probably need two to assure themselves of an at-large bid into the NCAA tournament.

They’d do themselves a big favor by making it the next two — Utah and Colorado.

Thursday night the championship run continues…I’ll be at Haas, who else?

And let’s hope Allen Crabbe shows up too…

    Go Bears!

Ive criticized monty a lot. Hes done a hell of a job and hes a great coach. I hope with improved recruiting we can become a top 15 program nationally.

If Crabbe stays for his senior season, Kreklow gets healthy enough to contribute, and Bird is as good as people say, this is a top 15 program next year.

    Beat Utah + 1 = NCAA… + 2 = NCAA & P12 Title.

    Go Bears!!

I’ll be there. Hope Greenstein won’t be at any.

Bought tickets for the last three home games. Wish I could travel to Las Vegas to watch the Bears in the Pac-12 tournament, but I have other commitments.

When I go to the games, I’ll be closely watching my man Cobbs to see if he does those stupid pretzel shots driving to the basket with a man on him. I say he has never made any of them (at least in a Cal game). But I think he’s learned that he shouldn’t try them, as I haven’t seen him do that for several games As I’ve said, I’m actually a big Cobbs fan and think he has a shot to make an NBA team.

If Crabbe stays around next year, with Cobbs returning and Bird coming in (and I’ve seen his tape — he seems to be the real deal, as Juancho has already stated), then Cal might have the best three man backcourt in the country next year, or maybe the best guard and small forward tandem (could call Bird or Crabbe a small forward, but they would end up playing like a guard).
