Basketball: Bears at No. 11 in latest bracketology

Cal’s overtime loss to Utah in the quarterfinals of the Pac-12 tournament on Thursday night cost the Bears two seed slots, according to ESPN.com bracketologist Joe Lunardi. He has Cal at No. 11 in his latest bracket projection, as one of the last four teams to get a bye past the “First Four” games in Dayton, Ohio.

Lunardi says Cal will face No. 6 Virginia Commonwealth at Austin, Texas,

Saint Mary’s also is a No. 11 in the latest projections, and also one of the “Last four byes.”

Because both teams are done, they can only be impacted by the outcome of other teams.

But ESPN.com’s “Bubble Watch” said of Cal, “The positive news is there is still a gap between them and the bubble abyss, they’re done playing, and it would be a borderline miracle for them to be leapfrogged collectively in the next few days. So they’re still a lock in BW’s humble opinion.”

Here’s Lunardi’s full bracket projection.

7 of 10 teams battling for those last spots lost today. Alabama, Ole Miss and Maryland are still alive. Hoping Fla wins the SEC so that there is no bid thief. MD plays UNC tomorrow. Looks like Cal could hold on to the projected “bye”. One can only hope! Go Bears!

Don’t forget about Southern Mississippi (Conference USA final) and UMASS (Atlantic 10 Semifinals) as potential bid thieves that are still alive.

Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee all bit the dust on Friday. All NIT bound.

Oregon spanking Utah (even though they are on game 3 to Oregon’s 2) is going to drop us lower on the subjective seedings. I’m thinking play-in game.

I think Oregon winning cancels out the negative effects of Utah losing. Especially if they win tomorrow.

I’d take an 11 over an 8/9, except that VCU is a sleeper final four team.

I’M happy we are going. At times this year that was in doubt.. Congrats to Monty for getting us there.

Having said that I do not accept the following excuses offered for why we lost vs Utah.
    1. Utah is a hot shooting team- Yeah right I think they had 15 points in the first half v Oregon. Teams with losing season records in average conferences are rarely “hot shooting” if there is an average defense.

    2. “Monty doesn’t like Conference Tourneys” This was quoted from many years back- and he is not influential enough to take seriously. If he is foolish enough to impart his feelings to his players so they don’t play well.. I don’t need to explain this do i?

A good coach has his team peaking at the end of the season We choked last year -let’s see what happens now.

    Steve,

Utah was hot. By Oregon, they were on game 3 in three days, including an emotional OT. Tired legs doomed them. It’s why the bye is so important.

  • OT

    Bubblicious action on Saturday morning…

Southern Mississippi and Memphis are in 2 overtimes. Good game…

  • 1brsfan

Alabama and So. Miss lost. Now let’s root for Umass and MD to lose!

  • OT

Mississippi was the only bubble team that won on Saturday.

The bubble collapsed spectacularly this year, with bubble teams going down one by one…

I think an 11 seed would be ideal for our hopes of making a Sweet 16. On our good nights, we’re capable of beating a team seeded #6. And then we’d get a second round matchup with a #3, rather than facing a 1 or 2 like we would have to as an 8,9, or 10 seed.
