Basketball: Cal signee Jordan Mathews delivers game-winning shot in SoCal championship game

Cal recruit Jordan Mathews hit the game-winning 3-point shot with 2 seconds left, lifting Santa Monica HS to a 53-50 win over Loyola-Los Angeles in the CIF Southern Section Division I championship game at Ontario.

“I knew we were going to hit them with a dagger,” Mathews told the Los Angeles Times afterward. “I felt good about hitting it.”

Mathews, part of an excellent four-man recruiting class headed to Cal next fall, scored 19 points, giving him 113 in four SoCal regional playof games.

“Big-time players make big-time shots, and we wanted the ball in Jordan’s hands,” Santa Monica Coach James Hecht said.

The Vikings (25-6) had twice early this season lost close games to Loyola. Now they move on to Sacramento to face Pleasant Grove of Elk Grove for the state Division I crown on Friday in Sacramento.

  • Uh Huh!

It sure is nice to be getting such great news about the incoming players, something that seemed almost completely absent last year or the year before. And it wasn’t for fault of the journalists!

    Gotta love JF!

Watched that game on tv. Mathews is a stud. Plays physical and with attitude. He just might be better than Wallace at the moment. Could beat him out next season.
