Basketball: Saturday game time/TV info

Cal’s NCAA tournament game Saturday against Syracuse will begin at approximately 6:40 p.m. and will be aired on TBS. That should be good news for all of you who don’t get truTV (I don’t either).

Syracuse crushed Montana 81-34 on Thursday night, improving to 27-9.

Pac-12 schools went 3-0 on Thursday, with Oregon and Arizona also winning.

Two more Pac-12 teams play Friday:

   — No. 10 Colorado vs. No. 7 Illinois at 1:40 p.m. on TNT

   — No. 6 UCLA vs. No. 10 Minnesota at 7:57 p.m. on . . . truTV.

This is a huge task. Syracuse is stocked with giant sequoias along with the rest of the big east. We will have the crowd. We need to make our 3s and hope the refs don’t suck. Last night got ugly late. I think Bennett was right, it wasn’t our defense, they just missed their shots. Wide open ones. That won’t happen Saturday. Still, this 12 seed has been a blessing. We can do this. Go Bears!

I think Bennett was wrong. They got nothing inside and had to settle for threes. When they were challenged they missed them. Kravish was awesome on Bennett!

I thought we shut down UNLV’s inside game pretty well. They made some LONG 3’s early on. Fortunately that cooled off.

Did you see the ref talking to Thurman after he got called for a block (could’ve easily been a charge)in the second half? Looked like the ref was smiling but Thurman wasn’t buying it, even shaking his head. Wonder what he was saying . .

    Great win! Go Bears!

We can definitely beat the cuse. They are a super streaky outside shooting team. If we can play with that same intensity in the paint and close out on the perimeter, then we can win this game. Cuse is good, but they have holes and lack that consistent leader on the offensive end. GO BEARS! SWEET SIXTEEN BABY

hank, JF- good to know I was not the only TV deprived one last night.

  • Eric

    I told you I’d rather be a 12 than a 8 or 9.

We can beat Syracuse, but the key will be lock down defense and avoidance of turnovers.

We bring the effort, and tough D we did last night we will be in the game.
Improve our poise and take care of the ball a little better (lot of bogus travel calls last night though) and seize the moment when it’s there. Use the crowd.
I think our guard size, experience and skills can break down there zone. Need the bigs to finish like they did last night, with authority. Unlv and Cuse are similar in size and talent.
    We have great experienced coaches
the nation expects the Cuse to roll us.
    Tremendous opportunity for our Bears.
    Got get it California
Can’t wait to get down to San Jose Saturday for the game!

A 12 is the best seed you can get besides a 4 or higher (obviously). Playing in San Jose is fabulous. Now we know how duke/nc feel getting to play in Greensboro or Charlotte or Raleigh every year. As Borat would say: “It’s nice! I like…”

Gotta get something other than GREAT defense outta Wallace tomorrow. If we get 15 points between Wallace/Kreklow/Smith I think we win.

March Madness!!! Let’s root on our fellow pac12 teams today, furd isn’t in the dance so no conflict there, lol. Go Bears!

Syracuse has 8 letters. Kline wears # 8.

Klined of eerie how many of these coincidences are showing up???

Eric, true enough about being a 12 over an 8 or 9. If it were not for VCU being under-seeded (very arguable) as a 5, each 12 could have won. Being a 5 just sucks. You know the players can’t help but believe they are heavy favorites, even though the difference may not be much at all.

As for our next game, the crowd may be the ultimate key. Montana didn’t even give them a fight.

Brandon Smith and Bak Bak faced Syracuse in that 2009 loss in MSG. So, at least some players (and Monty) have at least seen their zone, and that was with a stronger team, an eventual #1 seed.

Ultimately, it’s a Boheim squad, they are just as likely to dominate as they are to lay an egg (well, they’ve done more dominating in recent years). Still, on the other side of the country, if Cal keeps the crowd in it, there’s a decent chance.

Crabbe and Cobbs will have their work cut out for them. It is not a normal zone, and these guys have length. If they don’t really get separation, there will be a bunch of blocks off of what they would ordinarily think were good looks.

3/4 12th seeds won out this time, so obviously there’s something about the 12.

Against Cuse, start: Cobbs, Crabbe, Kravish, Solo and Thuranator for 5 minutes. Bang around, hit some treys.
